Hi All,

I have the HTC Diamond(Non branded) HTC variant and do miss my keyboard from my TyTn II. I like the diamond but find the screen slightly small when typing,... i like the look of the HTC HD and wanted to know if anyone has moved from the TyTn II / Diamond and what comments they have on the HTC HD. I am also considering the Xperia X1 so will post this there too.

Any comments would be very greatly received as i don't want to commit to a phone then to find i spend 6 months regretting it.

I moved up from a T-mobile MDA Vario II and was also worried about the lack of keyboard.

I guess it depends how much you use it. I did like it for fast text/emailing but am still very pleased I made the change. This slight negative is by far out-weighed by the other features and mainly the excellently huge screen & its resolution :( (better than an Iphone, but slightly less responsive)

That said - the screen size does make for quite reliable correct key pressing which means I now dont miss the keyboard at all now.

I am slightly missing the Dpad/select button and scroll wheel as these are easier to operate in a car holder on the move (as a passenger of course :) )

I am liking the thinner profile (albeit slightly bigger in height & width) as it fits well in the pocket, even with it in a ADVERTISING SPAM aluminium case.

I'm supprised how sensitve the GPS is - better than the TomTom BT reciever I had before.

Had the X1 been available 6 months ago the I would have got one then (it was previewed in Feb 2008) but the HD has the added benifit of the G-sensor and bigger screen and looks much more 'Special' & :(

My lads got a Diamond & the HD's screen is so much bigger - means you can dump the stylus for your finger

Seriously - just get the Touch HD - you wont regret it!

I moved the Diamond to HD this week. I love the HD. Yes it takes a little getting used to the lack of dpad, but its worth it.

I agree with both these recommendations.

Like you I dithered before buying for the same reason. Moved from TC magician. Don't use or need the stylus. LOVE the touch HD - superb.

I had an Omnia for a month before getting my HD. The Omnia is a good looking phone, but the 3.2 inch screen was not as useful for me as the luxurgious HD. I am so pleased I made the decision. By the way getting used to the virtual keyboard on the large screen takes no time at all. I can't remember the last time I used the stylus.

I also went from Omnia to HD. The screen is so much bigger, the resolution is 3x better and the screen sensitivity is much better than the Omnia.

Hi Rand, glad to hear you're going for the HD, you won't be disappointed. Like BillyBear I also upgraded from the Vario II to the HD, so my comments may mirror his somewhat.

Before my Vario II, I had an MDA Compact and the onscreen keyboards were so poor I resorted to handwriting recognition! This left me very weary of going back to a no keyboard device, so I made a point to get in some serious testing time on the HD before I made the plunge (the staff in my local Orange stores hide when they see me coming now  )

I was really surprised by the improvement in responsivenes and the lack of pressure needed, also the keyboards themselves are a vast improvement. As billybear says, the large screen makes getting the correct key quite easy, especially if you use the tips of your fingers.

The lack of Dpad took some getting used to, but with such a large display and finger scrolling, its not really needed I find.

I also love the fact its much thinner and lighter than my Vario too, the weight is spread out more and it easily fits in my jacket or trouser pockets.

An extra hardware button or two would have been nice, but I'm guessing they wanted to keep em to a minimum as not to spoil the looks.

I was actually due to upgrade in May, but put it off in anticipation of the X1. Having waited 'til its release and roadtesting it, I was disappointed. Though solid feeling, the units I tried weren't consistent, the display is too small for the 800x480 resolution (though I should say I'm partially sighted so may not be an issue for those with good vision), and the keyboard though metalic, doesn't have a lot of travel or any click to register a press. Another thing was the lack of a number row, one thing I discovered with the Vario was that whilst in a call, the number keys on the keyboard will only type numbers, so if I needed to enter text whilst on a call, I had to use an on screen keyboard.

Mike,

Thanks for the information... I like the Diamond but it's just too small to make texting or typing easy. I missed the keyboard from my old Vario II. The onlu think i need to deceide now is get a new contract and get the phone for around 80.00 or find a deal as a phone and keep my sim only with orange as i get free data :)

I was in london on business today and when to the orange shop (yes i am going to hell) i looked at the HTC HD and i am really inpressed...the screen is about a third lager than the diamond, and its not really that much bigger... i also looked at the X1 and this is a lot heavier and does not look so good in the flesh. I spoke to orange and they have offered me the phone for free on an 18month deal for £40.00 per month.... i get loads of mins, lots of text and free calls to land lines and 500mb of data... but i don't really use the phone apart from work which was just under 20mb last month.

My dilema is do i continue to keep saving for a sim free phone which is at least 10 months off or take the 18 month deal and hope that i do not see any new phones and try and save a little. I am on a sim only deal @ £15.00 per month with lots of mins and text (which i never get close to) but i get free data and orange said that i would loose the free data plan if i upgrade through them...

I WANT AN HD PHONE they look really nice :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I was in a similar position in that I originally wanted to buy my next phone SIM free. I didn't want a contract. My phone usage (calls and texts) is quite low, so I'm very happy on my Asda (Vodafone) PAYG SIM card. However, the £520 cost is just out of reach. I should have just kept saving, but the desire to have an HD was overwhelming and I finally succumbed and ordered it yesterday. I see the £35 per month contract as a 'spread your payments scheme' with the added bonus of inclusive minutes and texts. :)

I got my confirmation email earlier and I should have the phone tomorrow. Can't wait. I even managed to sell it to my wife. :D
