Hi,

Unfortunately my wife has got a Touch HD before me. :) I have another month before I can get mine. :D

She had a couple of niggles that I have been going through and sorting out or advising her of best practice. However, there is still one issue that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of...

She has been getting quite frustrated with the fact that everytime she puts the phone in its pouch or in a pocket it is turning itself back on (it has a really sensitive power button) and she runs the risk of calling someone or starting an application. On my MDA Touch I have a shortcut on the today screen to lock the device before I then power it off. It does not appear to be possible to add a similar option to TF3D.

Having gone through the manual it would appear that you should be able to set the lock by holding down the call end button. Having changed the "buttons > end key" settings accordingly, I tried this, but all it does is show the owner information and doesn't actually lock the screen.

I also tried choosing the "always display the quick list" option. Now holding down the end button will bring up a quick list that includes a "lock device" option. Selecting this option, again, shows the owner information but does not lock the device.

Has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing some other setting in order to enable this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One further thing I have noticed...

This is an Orange-ified Touch HD. I noticed that it does not come with google maps pre-installed, despite detailing google maps in the user guide. Is this how all the Orange branded ones come? I know it's not a big deal to download & install google maps, but it seems strange that it is not already there.

Thanks in advance,

Simon (looking forward to his HD).

Oh, and one other thing...

She has the 500Mb data plan, but can any one recommend any good apps for monitoring data usage? It would be good if it would allow a monthly reset date to be configured & if it excluded MMS data from the count.

Thanks :)

I have had my HD from orange a couple of weeks now, it’s generally great. As for branding other than the orange logo on the back cover, it’s orange free as far as I can see. The phone lock is by pressing and holding the call end key, but you have to hold for about 4-5 sec. slightly to long in my mind. I use SPB GPRS application which I already had and once set is working for me, but I had a couple of issues setting it up. A colleague of mind is using SPB wireless application which appears to be a much better application as it monitors all types of data traffic.

Hi silentbob (and your missus!)

It sounds as if something has gone wrong with the HTC Menu applicatiom either in your specific phone, or as a result of Orange's reworking of the ROM.

If you haven't got much installed yet, it may be worth doing a hard reset in case something is amiss in the current config, but this will of course lose all personal stuff already installed.

I don't think ORange include GoogleMaps by default, but as you say it is easy to download. At least if it isn't in the ROM, it is easier to upgrade when new versions appear :)

Spb Wireless Monitor is an excellent program for monitoring data use. It's predecessor Spb GPRS Monitor was also very good- a lot of operators actually bundle that with the Diamond/ Touch Pro and HD models so it may be worth looking on the companion CD to see if it is there :D

Thanks for the replies.

As for branding other than the orange logo on the back cover, it’s orange free as far as I can see.

As well as the external Orange logo, it is definitely an Orange ROM. The Orange logo appears as the start up splash screen, GoogleMaps appears to be missing and the favourites on the internet tab are all Orange World related (which, coincidentally, appear to be available only via phone's data connection & not wi-fi). I'm sure there must be other, not quite so obvious, Orange customisations.

The phone lock is by pressing and holding the call end key, but you have to hold for about 4-5 sec.

I found this out, but, rather than lock, it only shows owner information. Touching the screen takes it back to TF3D instead of to the password entry screen.

Neil:

I shall try a hard reset. It is a bit of a pain, but necessary I imagine. I wonder if any other Orange users have experienced the same?

GoogleMaps download... to do. :)

Spb Wireless Monitor looks just the ticket. Thanks both.

Now I have another thing that I couldn't quite get with TF3D. The user guide says on the music tab you can flick to browse through songs and albums. It seems to me that it will only browse through songs that are in a single folder, and therefore in the "now playing". I don't know about everyone else, but I tend to keep each album in its own folder. Is it really necessary to go via the library for each different album, rather than using the tab?

Thanks

I can't answer the m thing as I don't use TF3D (I have an Orange Diamond, but use Mobile Shell instead of TFD3D); I do remember though that the Music Player in TF3D is seriously limited :)

All the Orange World specific shortcuts have to be connected via the Orange phone signal rather then WiFi as they route via Orange's own internal servers which are not accessible to the web at large.

OK, update...

1) GoogleMaps - D/loaded & installed. Happy.

2) Spb Wireless Monitor - Purchased, installed & configured. Looks like exactly what I was after. Although, had a thought after. Didn't I get a data monitor on the CD with my MDA Touch? Ah well, I'm sure this'll be way better.

3) TF3D Music Tab - Can live with this. It is no different than having to browse library in WMP. I just expected a little better from it.

4) Device Lock - Still can't get this to work. I did a hard reset of the device, and the first thing I did once completed was try to lock the device, but it won't do it. It is not a problem with getting a response from holding the end key. I changed it again to the quick list option. Holding the end key brings up the quick list, but when selecting "lock device"... nothing! If I then add owner information, selecting "lock device" will show the owner information, but still fails to lock the device.

My wife sees this as quite a major problem & I tend to agree. You need to be sure that it is not going to be doing all sorts of stuff whilst in your pocket or bag. The question is, who do I raise this issue with? Orange or HTC? And where should it be directed? I could imagine the normal customer services rep on 150 wouldn't have the first clue what I am talking about, and it wouldn't get escalated to the appropriate person.

Another (minor) issue I have noticed: The standard alarms on WinMo allow up to 3 alarms. TF3D should display the next alarm. However, it actually only shows the first active alarm in the list, regardless of whether one of the other alarms will be the next to be fired.

Does anyone know the best way of reporting these faults? The most appropriate email address or phone number?

Many thanks,

Simon

Simon- your problem with the Lock shortcut needs to be taken up with Orange. The HTC version appears to work correctly, so maybe Orange have broken something when modifying the ROM? I'd also suggest going to an Orange shop to see it other samples act the same; if not, request a replacement. Whether this gets an educated hearing from Orange Technical is anyone's guess though!

Alarm display is an old bugbear of WinMo- I don't know if you can do anything about that.

I just found a thread on XDA Developers where others mentioned the same issue. They didn't say if they were Orange users. I have posted, and will await a reply.

I will try, as you suggested, the Orange shop. But I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have one for me to try. Worth a shot though.

Ok, after lots of searching I seem to have come across an answer (of sorts)...

Locking the screen only fails if there is a PIN set. After removing the PIN the lock now works. I have not tried it myself, but apparently if you turn off TF3D it is possible to lock the screen with a PIN set. So it would seem that it is a problem with TF3D itself. I would guess (but cannot confirm) that this is a problem with all phones, not just Orange. Also, I cannot confirm if it is also a problem for all models running TF3D (e.g. Touch Diamond & Touch Pro).

If I can confirm any of the above, then maybe the best course would be to submit a request for a hotfix from HTC?

It would be good if others could test the above to see if the problem exists on both SIM free & all network variants of all TF3D carrying models.

Thanks,

Simon

i have just tested mine to see if it has the same issue. without lock on it will work fine, but with the lock (simple pin) it will just flash and not lock the phone correctly. mine is a touch HD on o2, unlocked.

Thanks for the update. It is definitely sounding like it could be a TF3D issue. :)

Has anyone found a fix for the keylock issue yet or is there an impending hotfix due? Reading the thread on XDA Developers the only current answer is PocketSheild which although a solution it's not a fix.
