New Touch HD and confused

Hi I've just recieved my new phone from Orange and I'm a little confused, does it actually have a GPS inside the handset like the iphone or not?

I've managed to get Tom Tom working using an external bluetooth GPS but I kinda thought the touch hd had an internal GPS, is this so? Has it been hidden by the orange os or have I just been barking up the wrong tree? Any help appreciated!

To get Tom Tom to work with the internal GPS, you have to

Select "Other NMEA GPS receiver"

GPS baud rate:19200

GPS is connected to: COM4:

This seems to work fine for me and gives even better reception than my highly rated Qstarz external bluetooth GPS

I have Tomtom and as a configure setting it has "Built-in GPS receiver" as an option with no other settings for it. This is what I use and the inbuilt GPS receiver is more sensitive than the Tomtom mk2 bluetooth module that I had before.

Was the google maps app pre-installed? As I don't seem to have it on mine at the moment.

On TT6 I don't seem to have a Com port option after 'other NMEa device' I have baud rate and that's all. Is the com port set somewhere else.

it's good to know it does have a GPS after all!

Thanks for the help.

I am using TomTom Navigator 6, with Cortulla's WVGAfix3.

I reach the GPS set up via

Change Preferences > Show GPS status > Configure

Having specified Other NMEA receiver and Baud rate, my final screen says "GPS is connected to:" and you are forced to make a selection or press the Cancel button

Ok Tom Tom, google maps and memory map all now working with GPS.

It wasn't particularly straight forward to get them done (although not difficult when you know how).

I consider myself a relatively 'techy' person so I wonder how other people who aren't savvy manage to get on with these devices - not much help in the box or the device.

Still it is working now and I must say I'm pretty made up with my phone.

Have tried using Googlemaps, but with the GPS and Show Traffic turned on it doesn't half chew the battery up!!

If you're going to use the system for driving then I HIGHLY recommend powering the phone externally while you do it.

show traffic? i didnt think this worked outside of the usa?

googlemaps for driving gps isnt really a very good solution and wont have chew into your data allowance too (remember there is no such thing as truely unlimites, i believe oranges unlimited is really 500mb)

Show traffic certainly works in the UK - but only (afaics) on motorways and major trunk A-roads (I think).

yeah - I know about the data issue, cache for google maps is currently 6.7Mb and I've used it (on basic view) from the South west and Liverpool - Birmingham areas so far - whilst driving - so as long as you're not downloading the full satellite views I think it should be ok.

The current winmob version of TT is TT6.

There have been rumours that TomTom might - emphasis MIGHT - be looking at releasing v7 (the current version of their Personal Navigation Device firmware (PND) is version 8.302, I should point out), but given their shoddy treatment of PDA/PPC users over the last couple of years, I wouldn't hold your breath - e.g. no map updates for PDA/PPC users following the last release over THREE YEARS ago, no commitment to upgrade to the next version, and so on.

Hells bells, their marketing director even ducked away from the guys from Pocket GPS World when they tried to talk to them about TT7 for PDA/PPC, citing "drinks with friends", a rather pitiful and typical "I don't wanna talk to you" move.

That last shows TTs entire attitude to the core of loyal customers that helped them get to where they are today (the PDA/PPC users), before they'd even sold their first stand-alone PND. Frankly, I think that kind of attitude on the part of TT really sucks, and deserves to be treated with the contempt it deserves, by moving ones loyalty (and hard earned money) to another manufacturer.

Frankly, for a stand-alone SatNav product that does not require an active internet connection in order to function, I'd look at CoPilot, or something similar; the latest release of CP can handle OV2 POI files, which is a definite plus if you use Point Of Interest files on your current TT SatNav.

Ahem. That turned into somewhat of a rant, but I hope it's answered your question, and helped you decide on your next SatNav software solution :(
