occasionally - now more often than not - my GPS connection takes a while to fix and then drops connection every few seconds. this problem is fixable with a soft reset, but this is a pain.

generally, my touch HD is slower and buggier than 3 weeks ago. it is disappointing. does the Iphone os slow down and need daily softresets?

:(

Have you tried using the Quick GPS program to download the latest satellite information?

I run TomTom 6 on mine and now find it fixes pretty quickly with very few problems with dropped connections. I need to reset my Touch HD every seven days or so, which is vastly better than the Touch Dual, as is the accessibilty of the reset button. I managed to destroy the Touch Dual reset button by pressing too hard inside the hole of doom and had to resort to flicking the battery instead!

If it's getting slower and buggier, despite soft resets, then it does suggest that you have installed something that may be causing the problem. It may also be possible that the browser caches are taking up more memory- these don't get cleared down by a soft reset. Have you tried clearing the cached data?

It may be worth looking at your installed programs to see if you have put something on recently that uses a lot of memory. If you use HTC Task manager, you should also see whether applications are set to close or minimise by default. If set to minimise, then you should periodically use the TAsk Manager to close unwanted applications.

The dropped GPS signal, being fixed by a soft reset is unusual. Again it may signify a memory issue. GPS data is cached into a separate memory store in the GPS chip, and survives a soft reset (and often a hard reset as well); once there it ought to be pretty stable. The only time you should see dropped GPS connections is if the sky visibility is reduced.

wow thanks for detailed reply :(

how do I clear the browser cache?

I have not installed new software for a couple of weeks now...

I hate having to hard reset every couple of months - it is such a massive faff having reinstall all my software and tweak my settings. also have to ask skyscape nicely for new codes every time B)

sorry a bit OT but also not B)

a hardreset every 3 months aint a bad thing, much like reformatting your desktop every year aint, clears out all the kak that builds up etc

now the OT bit

skyscrape eh? i guess by your nickname, you are a doc? do you find skyscrape software that valuable? im a nurse prescriber for a drugs & alcohol team (psych nurse background) i have to deal with some medical bits and bobs (aside from the obvious substitute prescribing, hep vaccines etc) as many of my patients GP's don't really care much for their "junkie" patients primary healthcare needs..... you think its worthwhile me investing?

One thing I came across on my main site today was a report about the GPS losing it's connection every few seconds. The poster eventually tracked this down to the Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool. This has a setting for using Assisted GPS which is ON by default. A-GPS is not generally available in UK, and if on can cause issues. Turning it off fixed his problem.

You don't have this config tool loaded by any chance do you?

Browser cache (at least PIE) is cleared by going Internet Explorer/Menu/Options/Memory then hitting the Delete Files button. Opera I think is better behaved, and can have the cache size set in Options or via typing 'opera:config' in the address bar.

Hard resetting should not be necessary unless things go badly wrong. Most modern devices should not need this more than every few months.

A Hard Reset doesn't alter the Device Code as far as TomTom, Mobipocket and Skyscape are concerned, so reinstalling Skyscape apps ought just to be a case of rerunning My Skyscape on the PC. Obviously a new device will require a new activation code, and sometimes a new ROM might, but I've been able to simply reinstall all my Skyscape apps through 3 different ROMs on my HTC X7510. However, I do remember you posting some problems with your Skyscape apps in a previous post, so maybe it is on a per-app basis.

JonaJuna: Skyscape do prioduce some excellent applications and the ability to have a number of mainstream texts always to hand is good if you are out and about. As an osteopath and clinical teacher, I find the Skyscape version of BNF invaluable- it's now the only licensed mobile version of the BNF. I also have Merck and 5 Minute Clinical Consult which are good. I prefer Unbound Medicine's version of Merck for its free text lookup, but Skyscape's overall interface if nicer.

A-GPS is not generally available in UK

Neil, that's complete rubbish!

So as to speed up the fix process, several satnav/GPS products use versions of "Quick GPS" or "Assisted GPS". This is a set of data files, which help speed the fixing process by giving the GPS receiver a kind of electronic "heads up" as to where the satellites should be at any given time. Using Quick GPS decreases the TTFF (Time To First Fix) time by many magnitudes - I got a fix within a minute yesterday; More often than not, I get a fix in 30 seconds or so.

AGPS files are sourced as standard from http://gllto.glpals.com/2day/latest/. This is an internet address that is totally accessible from wherever you are, provided of course that you have internet access, via whatever method you use to access the internet with your phone, be it Activesync, WiFi, 3G, or whatever. There will be a registry entry to this effect in your PPC/Smartphone, by the way.

With the above in mind therefore, to say that "AGPS is not generally available in the UK" is completely false.

I always thought that AGPS was something to go with working out relative signals from cell towers and giving a rough guess from that, and on that basis being pretty useless. Nice to know that it's better than that.

It depends on your definition of A GPS ; QuickGPS is not the same as some operator definitions including O2 UK . They define A GPS as a service signal sent via the service channel and therefore not requiring any user data usage nor any program to mediate it.

This is totally transparent to the end user and utilises the chipset feature if available.

O2 were intending to use this model when they released the Diamond (Ignito) which is why they didn't'include Quick GPS . In the event they have yet to implement their A GPS service.

Turning off the A GPS switch in the Advanced Configuration app does not at affect Quick GPS so is worth trying.

Hi,

Seems you guys need an update :(

A-GPS is hardware dependent. It's built-in in the GPS chipset.

QuickGps is software that connects to the internet and loads the datasheets.

In this specific case : TT6 receives the GPS signal AND reads the ephemeris , which are transmitted by the satellites. This behaviour causes TT to take his time to get a fix. The problem you have with TT6 will most certainly be the result of memoryproblems. Which also is part of the problem, if I get it right.

Dirk- no-one's disputing the fact that A-GPS is simply a method of 'pre-loading' the ephemeris data into the relevant registers of the receiver. The point of the foregoing posts is that there are a number of ways of acheiving this.

There is evidence from some that turning on the service channel method, when it is not utilised by the operator MAY influence the aquisition loss that some are seeing. Those who have cited it are experienced WinMo users, and certainly in some of these cases, memory is not an issue (though GDI resources may be). The suggestion to turn off the switch in Advanceds Config is non destructive and may work, hence the suggestion.

Interesting! Whatever the definition (and we see different implementations in iPhone R1, Omnia and HTC models) it is a useful technology :(

Either way - I enabled AGPS last night and guess what....... TomTom drops GPS signal every few seconds. HTCs GPS Tool and Google maps lock solid (I get 5-6 sats on my TyTNII yet I get 8-9 in the same spot on my Touch)

Tried turning AGPS off and....bingo... fixed.

thanks all.

is nice to have generated some debate and sharing of ideas/knowledge. if only all my posts were so well followed!

couple of points:

I don't have PIE running at all - how do I clear opera cache? is there a setting to automate this?

I have not changed any settings with regards to AGPS to trigger this signal loss. how wouldI go about disabling it?

thanks again for your input!

on separate (slightly off topic) issue re skyscape:

I have oxford handbooks of virtually everything and an Anaesthetic drug guide. find them reasonably useful and convenient to have them all in my pocket... but they rarely actually get used much!

there is no AGPS option in my start/settings/system folder :(

and I can't work out how to delete my opera cache B)

If you haven't installed the Advanced Configuration program, then A-GPS setting won't have been altered. Your signal dropping is more likely coming from somewhere else.

To delete Opera's cache, open Opera, tap the Up arrow at the bottom right of the bottom menu bar, then select Settings/Privacy then Delete Cache (you may need to scroll up to see this item)

Opera's cache size is usually 4MB so this may not be the source of problems :P

I'll send you a PM later about Skyscape as its a little off-topic

I am also a Consultant Anaesthetist and find it fantastic that I can keep my Oxford Handbooks of Anaesthesia and Clinical Medicine in a device that is less than one quarter the weight of the just one of the books (151g c.f. 624g) and a 11% of the volume (86 cc c.f. 820 cc). The Touch HD screen makes reading the text almost as clear as reading directly from the books themselves.

However, the one problem I have is that all the Skyscape books have an icon with an exclamation mark on the Programs menu, making the quick launch Progam tab useless.

Do you know of anyway to edit this icon to something more helpful - just a simple A and M would be very helpful!!? I have e-mailed Skyscape but they have not replied.

SKKV Software , the makers of SKTools have a program that allows icons to be changed, and includes an Icon Store.
