Is unlocking required to re-flash?

Hello,

When I HardSPL'd and reflashed my Orange TyTNII with a decent rom (thanks again TLR) I recall having to unlock it first to make is sim-free?

I used the XDA-Developers method of flashing a dummy radio rom, running and app and re-flashing the correct radio rom before re-flashing and it worked fine.

I'd like to ditch the Orange rom on my Touch HD, I've gotten HardSPL and the rom I want to use..... but do I need to unlock the phone first?
