HTC mail or Gmail for Hero?

Hi guys.

I am really undecided as to which email software to sue on my hero out of the two it comes with... gmail or HTC mail with my gmail account.

What i like about the HTC mail is the cool widget for quickly flicking through your emails, plus the ability to multi touch zoom when looking at emails (where there is no zoom function at all on the gmail app)

However, the gmail app notifies you when you recieve an email immediately, whereas the HTC mail app takes at least 5 mins (depending on the frequency setting).

Does anybody know which drains the battery more, as this could be a deciding issue! Which one do you guys use, and why?

Cheers, Dave

I use both - gmail is used for the google account and mail for several other pop3 accounts. The battery drain for either isn't relevent as it's the internet connection that uses the power i.e. WIFI and/or 2G.3G.H (this has to be on to use the facility doesn't it)

I've decided to go with the HTC mail (as i only use 1 email account, which is gmail.) I am using imap to get them forwarded to my phone. I set the download frequency to every 5 mins on the phone, but have checked my gmail on the comp this morning, have 6 new emails, but they haven't appeared on my phone. Plus the little refresh icon in the app says it was only last updated just after midnight! How do i get it to update more??

I presume you have enabled IMAP in gmail.

I use gmail for my gmail account which collects 2 other pop accounts. I had the same troubles as you with HTC mail, for no discernable reason it would just stop updating.

Gmail is not as pretty but it works.

Yes i have enabled IMAP. Why do you ask?

Just checking that your account was setup to enable IMAP in the first place.

While your phone is set to check for mail every 5 minutes, do you have HSDPA/3G on? If not, have you set wireless to never sleep?

No i do not have wireless set to never sleep. The user experience with the htc mail is so much better, but it's just annoying not getting them the instant they go into my gmail account. Will setting wireless to never sleep drain the battery much? Also I'm currently using both locale and wiggle, and was wondering which drains the power more, bluetooth or wireless?

I haven't experienced any problem you described, though I have same setting.

The first reason I chose HTC mail is it can download and view attachment while "Gmail" can NOT (really disappointed with that).

And also I am a big fan of multi-touch zoom in/out.

HTC mail without doubt.

The question now is how to stop Gmail running in the backend (I already stopped its notification)?

I pretty much disable gmail by going into to home- menu- settings- data synchronisation- google- then unchecking the box next to google mail. I'm guna stick with HTC mail i tihnk, but it is dissappointing that it only updates every 5 mins and not instantly like gmail.

Ah well, hopefully they will update gmail soon to enable a widget and touch zoom

:) Been there hundred times, still not aware of it.

gmail is refreshing instantly but also a big amount of data consumption in backend. it's never a good thing if you don't have unlimited data package.

I take back what I said after a litter search. :)

GMail is using Push Mail technology, gives it capability of "always-on" (its even faster than browser on PC, charming) and saves battery.

HTC Mail is using POP3/IMAP, checks email actively, drains more battery. Even more if it uses high frequency.

I am now using both. Only HTC mail while there's attachment other than image file (GMail can not download attachment other than image file).

It depends what you mean by "download". Certainly I can open PDFs and Office docs (XLS, DOC etc) from Gmail. I take it you mean upload? :)

Dave

I've had no trouble downloading attachments with gmail.

I found HTC mail unreliable.

Apologies for digging up an old post but i just got my Hero yesterday and still learning. I use Gmail like the interface but have yet to discover how to save attachements. A .bmp file displays in the message body while a .csv file only displays as a paper clip with the file name next to it. There is no option to tap on it or menu option to save.

I'm curious as to others have achieved this?

Yeah, I went into data synchronization menu and unchecked the email option. Since Google enabled push mail i've set up my google account within the HTC email app as an exhange account. Doesnt seem to hold its connection as well as the gmail app. I.e. I deleted an email from my server using my pc and the change has yet to show on my phone.

I couldn't figure out how to delete my google account details so I did a factory reset. Obviously this wipes everything so do a back up first.
