i910 Omnia1 VS. i920 Omnia2

Well today is the big launch of the O2 by Verizon.

I went to my local Verizon store yesterday ,a company store and they didn't even have it in the store yet!

I guess Verizon not expecting much of a turnout?

Well if you are one of the lucky(?) ones to upgrade :D is it really that much better?

I hope you understand that it will be awhile probably before you can "flash" this could cause "withdrawals"

& nausea :(

If if have a Droid and are comparing it to the O2 I would really like to have you input.

Thanks ;) :D

AMOLED and WVGA says it all really :D

What is stupid is that everywhere else in the world it's the i8000 so surely they should have called this something on the lines of i8XX, I know the physical design is different but calling it the i920 will confuse people into thinking it is just a varient of the i900 format.

Apparently, there are differences between the GT-i8000 "Omnia II" and the SCH-i920 "Omnia II:"

dual LED flash vs single LED flash

single speker vs stereo speakers

positioning of 3.5" headphone jack and USB port

256MB RAM vs 208MB RAM (listed, at least)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few more differences under the hood.

SD Card slot is positioned differently as well. I'm guessing the RAM difference just has to do with Verizon loading up their junk. Once we have an official ROM, we'll be able to recover the lost RAM, I'm sure.

I'm kind of surprised by the lack of response on my question about the two Omnia 1&2. :(

I went to the Verizon forum and the conversations were next to nothing as of 1 hour ago (1:30 EST) :D

The verizon rep said to me yesterday that the Samsung Omnia 1 has had a disappointing sales record, is the Omnia 2 going to follow in the same tracks??

;) :D

Well if it was really such a disappointment then why are they releasing the Omnia II? You know what I mean? Sure, the Omnia wasnt exactly the greatest out of the box, but as of today mine has all the same features and then some compared to the "latest and greatest" smartphones. I feel that if people don't want to make a big thing of it, that's okay; it just means I can get mine without all the hassle :( And to be honest we have had to wait what felt like 5 years for the O2 to come out, and I have been eyeballing the Imagio since it came out so I just dont know what to do anymore... There are so many cool things coming out on the O2 that I need to try out b/c after playing with an Imagio in the Verizon store, its pretty freakin cool and I may be swayed that direction... Advice anyone?

Thanks.

Yeah, I hear loud an clear...

Somebody on another post I had brought the 3G to 4G change coming in 2010 Verizon LTE, now thats COOOL!!!

Also rumor only, of the HTC passion being released soon, Rumor was real soon??

So maybe its better in the back seat for awhile and be able to wait an see...

I have a little over a year to go on my contract. The Verizon store rep said that after one year I can upgrade for a $20.00 fee no early cancellation penalty !!!

Just buy the Omnia2 for $199 and sign a new contract.

Sounds real good.......

Went to verizon store yesterday and they didnt have O2 out to play with yet. :D They did however have the Imagio and touch pro 2, tp2 has windows 6.1, imagio 6.5, and both were nice as ****! If they really were concerned about selling O2's you think they'd have it on display asap, if i had been shopping for new phone for myself i prolly would have grabbed the imagio and not worried about what they got in the back since the average consumer doesn't know any different. Just my 2 cents :(

I just looked at the Omnia2 NICE real pretty and great screen....

After reading what everyone's saying and their input about the Android system I,m starting to lean towards the Android system.

What DRAGONRIOT said about being able to run several apps at a time impressed me.

BLAZINGFWOLF'S statement about the programs being smaller and how the Android systems stores them is a selling point also.

I have a few weeks ,mid Janurary when I can get serious about changing phones and the rumor mill is running full speed about the HTC Passion being the next Android type phone.

I still have that bitter feeling when I bought my Omnia1 and found out locked GPS systems and a terrible Samsung UI.

:D :(

I will only speak for myself and a few other people I know who bought the first Omnia. Samsung and Verizon were extremely unresponsive to the people who bought this phone from Verizon. Scanning this board people are jumping to the DRoid, going to the iPhon (gasp) and waiting on the HD2 (well, I am). No promotion of the Omnia II and the Droid gets commercials and a website? C'mon. Been there last year with the new Blackberry vs. Omnia. I think most of us have learned our lesson. The Omnia is NOT a priority to Verizon.

Don't get me wrong, I love the i910. I took me 8 months to get it tweaked though. More importantly, I looked on Pocketnow.com and the HD2 is getting an update ALREADY?!? Has it been out a month yet? http://pocketnow.com/software-1/htc-hd2-of...m-update-leaked. How long did it take for the one - and only - update we got for the i910? Misinformation, unknowledgeable tech "experts". Your not getting me twice. The cooks and the willing forum members kept me happy with the phone. I would like the manufacturer to chip in this time. This is why I think "some" folks are not salivating like the first go round. We are, as a whole, underwhelmed with Verizon and SAmsung's handling of our experience.

my 2 cents.

GPS is not locked on the O2 and the revamped Samsung UI has some highlights but its not all that great. It's fine though, the great thing about winmo phones is you can always throw on a different UI app on top of it like SPB Mobile and WAD. That's what I did the first time I had the i910 and when the cooked roms came to the i910 it made my experience with the i910 better.

Being an owner of an O2 now I will be going through the same thing, install SPB Mobile and WAD, play with the reg tweeks, and cross my fingers that an O2 cook will come to our rescue!!

The only gripe I have about the O2 is that there is no optical mouse/button like the O1. I continually find myself swiping (not swype :D ) my finger on the O2's main menu key. If you used the optical button alot on the O1 then you will have to go thru an adjustment period if you get the O2.

I have been following the comments about the Moto Droid. Most people seems very happy with the Android O/S. :D :D

A lot of the Android users are past WM users. Most haven't looked back !!

I guess the main feature is how the Android via a Linux O/S stores and open programs. You can have SEVERAL programs running at the same time WITH OUT A SLOW DOWN. ;)

Can you imagine going for weeks with out a soft reboot??? :D :(

I really don't use any Window programs on my I910 Omnia other than the O/S so I think I'll give up the slow wm 6.5 O/S for the Anrdoid 2.0 after the first of the year of my contract.

IMHO

I think all the great chefs are going Android!!!

Went yesterday to Verizon store and played with O2. My biggest complaint, although not a major issue, is that when using 12 key phonepad w/ xt9 and you hit the "ghi" key it automatically gives you a "g" instead of an "i". Making you have to hit the i on the suggestion bar everytime. It is very annoying and is the reason i flashed to a cooked rom in the first place on my i910. That has been an issue ever since the official cf03 update with phonepad input. Couldn't believe that the issue persists on the O2 as well! G for one will NOT be going to the android, at the very least will be going for one of those very nice looking HTC's, since all kinds of stuff on our omnia's is taken from htc's anyway.

Again, just my 2 cents. (maybe it's 4 now?)

I'm hoping that the Passion comes out soon and that it's reasonably priced! That'll make me switch from WinMo to Android.

not a bad idea the real question is how long will we have to wait i hear Jan maybe.

I don't see the Omnia 2 selling well. Samsung needs to realize by now that they can't make a UI for s***. TouchWiz was a stupid idea from the beginning, we all know this.

From a hardware standpoint, the Omnia 2 is a really nice phone. The screen is pretty amazing, aside from being AMOLED. To someone who didn't know the difference, the screen on the Omnia 2 feels damn near capacitive. Obviously it's got plenty of horsepower for most apps.

Unfortunately, it's being released in a very crowded market in a time when Verizon is pushing Android heavily, mostly to snag customers away from T-Mo. The Droid isn't a terrible phone, but Android as an OS still needs a little more time to mature to be viable for power users (imo). Another problem is that Verizon has a very large BB user base, mostly the younger crowd who think they are cool for whatever reason. Getting these people to switch over to a completely new phone experience is near impossible.

But really though, like I said, I would place poor Omnia sales largely on TouchWiz. It's ugly, cumbersome, awkward, and not appealing at all to the average consumer.

I think I will probably go for the Omnia 2, but I'll wait a little while to get a feel for what apps do/do not work on it, and hopefully see the master chefs get hold of a ROM and start cooking (with fewer/better ingredients).

I would certainly go for the Droid but for the lack of a SlingPlayer Mobile client. That's a must for me, and heaven knows that by the time Sling releases an Android beta version, I'll have gone through at least one more two-year upgrade, probably nearing the second.

Gee! I wonder why the Omnia2 isn't flying off the shelves :( ;)

MAYBE its has to do with this....

I just went to my local VERIZON COMPANY STORE to look at the Omnia2 up close and personal. Today is 12/07/2009 right??

The very nice rep said OH we don't have them on display, there still in the back.

I'll get you one to look at.

I could not believe that here's a company store and they don't even have one of there new premier phone out yet!

Gee its only been a week since release of this new powerhouse of a phone.

She said nobodys even come in to ask for it.

I guess even Verizon not too hot about the Omnia2 :D

This gives me more reason to hold out and GET this new phone, Now this is HOT!!!

:D :D

I've had the O2 since release and have had a good amount of time to play with it now. First off Touchwiz is complete garbage. I was determined to give it a try but that lasted all of about an hour before I threw SPB MS back over it, which turned it into a completely different phone. The widgets and widget store were a novel concept, but no Twitter widget, yet widgets for LOL Cats and LOL Dogs showed how poorly thought out it was. The screen is beautiful and the touch sensitivity is much improved, about as close to a capacative screen as a resistive can get. Definitely helped with screen envy I had since my wife got her Droid last month!

Swype takes a few minutes to get used to but once you do typing speeds are incredibly fast. The GPS seems to lock a lot faster, using the same IGO 8 I had on my first Omnia. Haven't really tested it on much else yet. Little touches like the on board stylus, stereo speakers, and built in WOW HD are nice, and overall it feels like a big improvement over the original Omnia.

Biggest drawbacks so far are the lack of rotation on most apps, but that was easily solved by installing Orientation Setting, and the lack of the optical mouse(didn't realize how much I'd miss it).

Very happy with the phone overall so far, just sad that it feels like Verizon is going to sweep it under the rug like they did with the first Omnia in favor of the Droid and newer Android phones. My store only had 2, and when I got there about 4 hours after they opened they had JUST sold their first one about 5 minutes before. Hope that it picks up some momentum once people play around with the display a little, but with the laggy Touchwiz the first thing you see I doubt it will happen.

In my Humble Opinion I think that the Samsung Omnia I910 is a great phone. but if there was a disappointment in sales is because of the ignorance of people. just because they don't know how to use it doesn't mean that the phone is bad choice. I would say that if you don't know how to give your windows computer a proper use there is no way you would know how to handle a WM cell Phone..

That's just my opinion....

I agree with you for the most part. The Omnia I910 was a great phone, when you knew how to put the proper rom on it that made it user friendly towards you. The original software sucked for everyone who bought the phone. My Aunt bought the phone and hated it, but I bet if I had threw BW rom on there she would have liked it.

Just goes to show you the reason why iPhone is on top is because simple (minded) people can use it with out effort.

Right on as far as the Rom's

Went I went to the Vzw store the other day the rep couldn't wait to get rid of her i910.

I showed her my i910 with Storm's Rom plus the things I added on and she couldn't get over the improvements.

Yes the chefs of Modaco are a real plus, they made the phone WORK...

IMHO the O2 would be great if Samsung (Samsuck) would stay out of the U/I business.

:D :(

So I just got back from my local VZW store and played with the O2 for a few minutes... Same thing as for you other guys, they had to pull it out of the back from its original box. Upon first glance it is a really nice looking phone, a little thicker than the original omnia but I like 'em a little thick :D The touchwiz ui is largely the same as on the omnia with the addition of the widget store which in my opinion was boring. Who cares about widgets if none of them are useful?? The ui overlay over WM 6.5 is nice, but a little boring for me; everything is black. The screens are all uniform but it gets old real quick because as most of you are, i am used to being able to customize things within the blink of any eye! It didn't look like it would be that easy to do on this device. As everyone else has been saying Swype is pretty darn cool. I got the hang of it right off the bat; definitely expect to see this on other phones in the future... Oh, and the "main menu" is kind of lame in my opinion; I am used to scrolling up and down, who wants to re-learn how to cycle thru your programs going left to right? Not me!! I much much MUCH prefer the Imagio start menu over the O2's... Dont get me wrong, I am as big a Omnia fanboy as all you guys, I just agree with one of the earlier posts in that at this point I kind of expect the device and OS to be on par with what we've come to expect these days out of our phones. The O2 is definitely a cool phone, and the specs are just about as good as they come, I just hope to see custom ROMs soon! lol (I just like flashing, hehe)

PS I was thinking, maybe we'll never be happy! lol If only those darn freakin phone manufacturers listened to its consumers then maybe we'd be happy! :(
