Why is graphics performance so bad!

Hi all,

Can anyone here tell me why the graphics performance of this phone is so rubbish. For example, the cryon physics game, I always knew it ran a litle slow, but last night I installed a copy on a friends TG01 and it ran absolutly perfectly, so much better than mine that it was embarrassing! I know the TG01 has the snapdragon cpu but seriously, the difference was like going from a 486 to a core i7!

I feel totally ripped off with this phone, especially as I could have had the TG01 on a cheaper contract but decided to go with this phone as I thought it was the better all rounder because of its size, but I am really starting to regret my decision.

Anyone got any thoughts on this, are samsung able to do anything to help, or shall i just give up and ebay the thing?

It has to do with the grahics acceleration, not to the CPU only. Omnia 2 has no working OpenGL ES 1.x (unless you use the Ginkage/Chainfire version from this forum) and OpenGL ES 2 implementation is rather crappy. Samsung still didn't fix this. My guess is that they don't have the knowledge to write a good driver. As their original OpenGLES 1.x implementation was so flawed that Ginkage/Chainfire decided to throw it away and start their own implementation.

As the Crayon physics game uses OpenGL ES 2 you can understand why it's rather slow. I believe I read somewhere that when you disable sound, performance increases quite a bit.

Thanks. I was wondering why WiToss looked like it was in slow motion

3d performance of Omnia2 should be faster than Iphone3G but instead looks slower than the first Omnia!! Also tried the latest Secany Rom and the situation is still the same, even SPB Shell 3d carousel is incredibly slow!!!

PowerVR MBX-Lite (iPhone 3G): 1 M triangles/s, 100 M pixels/s

Samsung S3C6410 (Omnia II): 4 M triangles/s, 125.6 M pixels/s

PowerVR SGX 520 (Palm Pre): 14 M triangles/s, ___ M pixels/s

Qualcomm QSD8250 (Toshiba TG01/HTC HD2): 22 M triangles/s, 133 M pixels/s

PowerVR SGX 535 (iPhone 3GS): 28 M triangles/s, 400 M pixels/s

I was wondering what was the matter with the 3D carrousel with the SPB. Anyone has an idea for it?

Hello you all.

I trully agree with all of you about the low performance of the graphical interface on i8000.

Check this out:

http://www.modaco.com/content/i8000-verizo...ax-ui-platform/

This may be the path to a solution.

Best regards

Traccker

HOLYYYCATS!!..I hope he will post here how we can speed it up! thats awwwsome!!!!!!!!!

Graphics performance of I8000 is great. Just 3D performance is not good. But I don't care about 3D on mobile phones. I prefer movies,.....

that's what i am talking about! Not only 3d performance is so bad, but video acceleration is even worse!!!!

Try a coreplayer benchmark of one of the HD 480p videos on the apple, the performance is s***! On my Omnia i900 with Xscale video acceleration i got around 80-90% but with Omnia2 i only got 30% !!! The hd videos are so slow that you can't watch them :)

Try this file as example:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JOQ8RS0D

you'll have to use coreplayer because touchplayer won't even read the file :)

Strange as I do not get any real issues. SPB carrousel runs fine and so does the crayon physics, I've also no real issues with video.

I'll try the one linked to above (a description as to what is actually is would help though) and then post back.

I'm using the bulk standard ROM that came with my phone back in October.

Had a play with that video nd yep it is certainly unplayable, it looks more like a slideshow than a video, but strangely on benchmark it's more fluid.

Personally I think you are expecting too much from the device with the HD video above as it is not encoded for the device, but you can not really compare results as such to the i900 because of the WQVGA v WVGA difference.

It would be interesting to see what the results are on other WVGA devices like the HD2 with it's more powerful CPU.

Richard T,

You're absolutely right! i8000 indeed a better all rounded when compared phones with Snapdragon cpu which does not have dedicated MP4-AVC H.264 decoder. Further more i8000 usage was longher than those phones, also including the idiot-proof phone like the Apple iPhone. Watching 720x48030fps MP4 H.264 encoded movies on i8000 3.7" AMOLED was totally stunning as the video quality was amazingly smooth and vibrant.

Your problem was just like what awarner (MVP) mentioned, you're asking too much for a phone.

The rules of thumb for a "Cellphone",

You can't have the best of both side of the world!

Lastly, you will be regret more, if you had make other choice than i8000.

i8000 by far, the most stable WM6.5 devices money can buy to date, period.

i had an HD2 and the coreplayer benchmark results were around 80%/90%(almost like my previous Omnia I900) versus 28%/35% of Omnia2. Moreover everybody is having really slow Crayon and Spb Carousel with stock drivers, maybe you are using a modded openGles driver, that would explain your performance difference.

It's true that you can't expect too much from Omnia2 but it's true also that due to s*** drivers this phone performance is about 30% of how it should and would be with more optimized drivers. Everybody is replacing the Samsung GUI, how can a 2010 phone be so slow??? Come on!!! It's not free, it's 450euros! You can't play anything in 3d fluid, you can't watch HD 480p videos that would run simply great on the Amoled display but you will watch them at 5fps! While other modern phones play without any problems.

Is it asking too much to see that your money is well spent and not spent for something slower than 2 years ago phones? And what about the support? Where are the Official Samsung ROms? Since the HTC HD2 was out, there are already around 10 official fixes from HTC!!!

OK. This is your opinion. My opinion is that Omnia II is the best WM/iphone/smartphone/pda device for playing divx/xvid movies on the market.

And you can belive me, that I had a lot of devices in my hands.

I don't understand why phone must play QuickTime video formats in HD resolution. What is the point of this???

Be kind and try some xvid movie in avi format.

a normal xvid or divx in avi format is not a term of comparison since even a 100€ phone can play them without problems. The samsung touchplayer is indeed very good and thanks to the acceleration can play videos without any issues problems but the thing is that it supports very few video formats. So if you want to play those formats you have to use coreplayer with an incredible decrease of performances. I would love to rip my bluray movies in 480p and play them on my Omnia2. Am i the only one? i don't think so :) If i wouldnt have sold my HD2 i would be able to play them without any issues, but with Omnia2............

And did you know the HTC HD2 fixes was just to fix serious daily basic phone usage problem and no improvement on performance?

Example,

Camera photo with RED color masking in the center

Frequent out-going SMS stuck in the outbox

Phone hang during call

Screen could not wake up when incoming call

Screen tocuh area sensitivity to programs problem

And bla..bla..bla..

All this are basic phone usage, and none of them happen on Omnia-2.

Ripped all your BluRay movie with FormatFactory and be amaze by the video quality playback on Omnia2 and it brilliant AMOLED screen.

I don;t know but my Omnia II works suprisingly great when I play games, I actually compared my Omnia II with Acer Neo using Asphalt 4 and to my suprise my phone runs the game smoother

Yes, HTC HD2 was too big and looked fragile to me. Omnia2 is much more scratch resistant, amazing display colours, smaller and lighter, better photos and videos, and battery life much much longer. All the rest is worse than HD2 :)

And did you know the HTC HD2 fixes was just to fix serious daily basic phone usage problem and no improvement on performance?

On my HTC HD2 with the official 6.5 rom only had the Photos and video issue, i never had all the other problems that you mentioned. Screen touch in particular was exellent in any situation.

Yes, they're smoothly, at least for me.

I'm using sometimes HTC Touch Video Converter 1.21.

It does exactly the same what FormatFactory but is more simple.
