Question for those Chefs with more than one Omnia!

For you cooks that have more than one Omnia and use one for cooking and one as your actual phone how do you test data features like internet? Since you can only have one phone activated how do you test to see if the data connection is working or programs that use online features are working properly? Since Omnias are only $10 now I'm thinking about getting a new one and using my old one for cooking so I can actually keep my phone setup as a working phone. But I keep breaking internet while cooking and I'm trying to figure out how I would test that or similar things since the test unit would not actually be activated and able to connect to the data connection or phone connection for that matter?

during the short time that i had 2 omnias i tested the roms on the non-activated phone first just to make sure they would boot and not brick my phone. once i determined they were safe to boot i would try them on my omnia with service to make sure the data connection and programs that used the connection worked.

Same here. Bought a cheap (not activated) omnia to experiment before loading anything on my wifes phone but i never know if things like making and receiving calls, text, MMS, etc will work untill i actually flash hers (which is activated with VZW).

Like above, i'm fairly sure i won't brick it at least!

Bummer, I was hoping there was a way to tell that stuff was working without flashing and messing up what's on the second Omnia. I was hoping to not have to make backups of what was operational on the Omnia and not have to make a couple flashes to get it back to usable condition.

One thing you can do so you don't mess up what's on the second omnia is to switch back n forth by activating the phones (one at a time, of course) on the verizon wireless website. That's what I've been doing. Then I can test the new rom (incl the internet, MMS and other services), then switch back when I'm done testing. You just have to have the ESNs for both phones.

Hmm, interesting! How long does it take to do that? If it takes a little bit of time I could see that getting old real quick if you did that a couple times a night.

So just so I'm clear on everything. On the non-activated phone if you open a internet browser and it tries to connect will it right away say that the phone isn't activated or you don't have service, or will it try to connect (with the connection bubble with the "cancel", "hide" options) and then say you don't have service so you can see that portion works? That's what I'm really after as opposed to actually connecting and using the data connection.

Can't you use your home wifi connection for the omnia to connect to to do the data testing? After all, the omnia has wifi capabilities to help during normal poor VZW signal levels, i.e.: basement.

I can but I don't really want to test the actual data capabilities but just that the browser software will use the connections properly to know how to connect to the data connection. For testing if the online features are totally working I can use the wireless. The problem is during cooking I keep breaking it so the browsers don't know how to connect to the data connection. I get an error bubble saying I need to setup a connection profile for it to be able to connect with a "dismiss" button. I don't really need to actually connect. I just need to be able to test that it knows how to connect properly.

Activate the spare phone with PagePlus Wireless. Go through one of the dealers on HowardForums and get the activation for free or a buck or two, it includes $6.00 of airtime at 10 cents a minute. You have 4 months to refill with $10.00 for 100 minutes being the lowest cost refill.

To do the activation/deactivation thing, it can take anywhere from a couple of minutes to more like 15 minutes, depending on Verizon. You have to put the ESN # into the website, then do the *228 thing. I just tried opening an internet browser on my non-activated omnia. Here's what happens: I get an unable to connect error message (popup) and, in the browser itself, I get an action cancled msg (unable to link, pls try the following, etc.).
