The over-the-air upgrade to 2.1

I keep reading that HTC is "threatening" with an over-the-air upgrade of our beloved Heros. Obviously us MCR-fans are NOT interested in this.

Some say this is simply not possible, some say you will get a download option, some say other things.

I am curious as to what we can do if we do get a download message, and how we avoid locking up our phones in that horrible non-root state.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Maybe a comment from Paul?

Its pretty unlikely that it would be an OTA, the file would be quite large, in line with the roms we download which could affect some people's data allocation.

Not everyone has an unlimited data package.

It might just be on the MCR rom, but go to Settings, Security, Firmware Download (its at the bottom of the list of options to you might need to scoll to see it). There you will find options for Download Automatically, Prompt before download and Never. These say download and not install, so I think you would be asked before you install even after download.

I suspect that OTA will not apply when there are operator versions of the ROM, at least OTAs from HTC. Maybe the operators will do OTA?

I'm pretty sure it won't be OTA, the same way the last one wasn't.

I spoke with HTC Support on Tuesday regarding a bug I have with my T-Mobile g2 Touch (Hero) and was definately told that the 2.1 update has been confirmed as being OTA and will be in April.

I spoke to a guy in the pub about it and he said that as soon as they release it EVERY Hero will lose root access, doesn't matter if you upgrade or not. Also, your phone won't ask you if you want to upgrade, if you're in a call or using it for anything it'll just instantly shut down and flash itself. If you've got low battery and the flash doesn't complete it's your fault for not keeping a charger with you at all times and HTC won't give you a new one or repair the one you have. Apparently if this does happen you can get £10 off the price of a Legend though.

No offence, but ill suggest to drink less and think more, this message contain one of the most biggest junk that i have seen regarding 2.1 update....

1. even if it will be OTA, cellphone will ask to download this update, because most ppl have data limited plans, and OTA like this will result in payment for the internet connection higher then phone it self

2. OTA flash will never start unless there is a decent amount of battery left and if isn't it will ask you to recharge your battery before updating

and this "If you've got low battery and the flash doesn't complete it's your fault for not keeping a charger with you at all times and HTC won't give you a new one or repair the one you have."

LOL

No offence but if you knew how reliable my source was you would be making sure you've got your charger with you, not posting on forums.

Also, who are you to tell me how much I can and can't drink! That's insanely rude.

Lol! Brilliant thread. Wahwah deserves some kind of award for that one!

Maybe he'll cause some panic, but it's worth it for a good laugh. I especially loved the serious reply after it too :)

I came home and found that my Hero had hung itself... I called HTC and they said the OTA upgrade would cause rooted phones to hang themselves.

It was the only time I had left my phone at home, too...

Hmm, something about this isn't quite right. I'm keeping my eye on you... & if I see you hanging around with a Desire or Nexus One in your dirty little current devices, I'll know I was right :)

You know, I am quite tempted to get a Nexus One, especially considering my tax return is about the value of one.

I plan on waiting for something newer though. Hacking Android is fun even on a less capable phone.
