Good day gentlemen,

Opening this thread to ask if any of you with more linux experience could write/point to a guide for making a linux image like the one mentioned here http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...unning-on-hero/ and also info on how one's supposed to write the boot file the .sh script etc. Also would any of you be able to port the newest version of Backtrack in the same way (or ubuntu, to show us how it's done)? After all Backtrack 4 is Debian based...

Thank you for your time and I'd appreciate your help!

I love MoDaCo

it is not that easy... is there an arm version of backtrack? then it might be possible to do a chroot similar to the ubuntu thing, there is no way to actually *boot* ubuntu on the hero so far (and probably never will be...). it is still the android hero kernel running, all you do is mount an imagefile, then tell the shell to use the contents of the imagefile as root filesystem (aka "/").

if you could elaborate a bit on what you actually need backtrack for there might be another way around this. i suspect you want to crack wifi keys with your hero. i am also interested in this, but never managed to do it. there are some unresolved problems, i remember the wifi driver not supporting promiscious mode etc., someone claimed to have it patched, but he wouldn't release it as it might be used for illegal activities... tbh i don't think anybody ever did it, there were never enough and esp. good enough devs working on the hero, and since the release of the nexus the few that actually had the skills to do this kind of stuff left as well... sry for the bad news.

not true, I was able (already a few months old) to do packet injection on the Hero, you can find instructions and kismet/aircrack/wpa_supplicant binaries somewhere in the teknologist kernel thread, however its not very userfriendly you need to patch the kernel build own modules, and there is no support for wifi control through widgets, so you have todo everything in command shell. If the HTC modified kernel source for android 2.1 get publicized I will create an own thread with kernel modules, kernel and instructions if there is need for it.

sweet, and sorry, i surely didn't want to offend anybody. i guess i haven't followed that topic close enough... looking forward to some kernel modding on 2.1, can we count on you there? i am afraid that teknologist won't be that enthusiastic about the hero kernel, not sure if he even kept his hero...

no I have to apologize I didn't want to sound so harsh, just wanted to point out that there is a possibility :P unfortunately I'm not a "kernel hacker" as teknologist is. I'm only an "advanced" linux user which knows how to patch, compile, use linux kernel thats all. Ah and by the way more or less everything I have done is based on this great tutorial: http://bobcopeland.com/android_wifi.html

hm that link you posted is already voodoo for me... :P i managed to compile the kernel for the hero, but that is about it. i hope once the kernel comes out we can count on you, and maybe find one or two others that help with tweaking the sources...

Sorry but you are definetly a voodoo... would like to do it for my milestone, but maybe with backtrack is its possible...
