any way to have wifi tethering on HTC desire?

thx

I just plugged the phone into my laptop, selected the 'Internet Sharing' option (as opposed to 'HTC Synch', 'Disk Drive' or 'Charge Only' options) and opened my browser....

Having a laptop and a WiFi card doesn't make one to have a WiFi modem/router and a DSL contract too, nor a WiFi spot in range.

WiFi tethering is simpler than USB one since doesn't require cables; and, moreover, allows multiple PCs to share the same mobile internet access.

I used WiFi tethering all the time with my hero - I'm often working where there is no WiFi signal, or only expensive pre/post-pay hotspots. Similarly the WiFi in the nearby library is so locked down with restrictions that even the google personalised home page won't connect - plus my HSDPA is much much faster.

As for why WiFi rather than cable? I use a slip case on a hewlett-packard 2710p ultraslim tablet. With the extended battery I get about 8-10 hours use. I don't even carry a power cable so bringing along extra cables "just in case" is not a priority. Obviously with the Desire, been a bit limited. Still don't want to carry the cable, as I only have the one micro-usb cable that came with the phone, and don't particularly want or risk losing or misplacing it! Resorted instead on taking my SIM card out and using the built in 3G of laptop.

In case you haven't used it - it works by creating an ad-hoc network between your computer and phone, then uses the phones 3G connection for access.

-Andrew.
