Transfering contacts from MS Outlook

Recently I jumped on android platform from my old good omnia i900 and wonder how to transfer my contacts from MS Outlook to my new shiny desire.

Can anyone help?

Depends on the version of Outlook you are using - I know last I tried 2010 beta/tech preview did not work with HTC Sync. If you are using Outlook Express or 2003/7 then you can use HTC Sync to keep your contacts in check.

The better option (IMHO) is to export your outlook contacts to a CSV file and import these into the contacts in Gmail. This will then keep your contacts sync'd between phone and cloud, ensuring you always have access to them, even if the battery dies, phone breaks/gets lost/stolen etc.

Using HTC sync I'm not sure what the contacts from outlook will default as; i.e. if they are saved by default as a "phone contact" or as a "google contact". The latter will sync automatically with the Gmail contacts app, however the former will not. Furthermore as far as I can find there is no way to change the type of contact from phone to google or visa versa once it has been saved onto the phone itself.

I have also come from an i900 Omnia. I used HTC synch to import contacts from Outlook (the setup wizard in HTC synch does it for you) and it works 95% OK. The only problem I had was that in Outlook my contacts were saved as Surname, First Name. When imported in to the phone they were all listed as First Name Surname.

I couldn't find any way to change the listing of all contacts at the same time, so had to change them all individually ;)

have you ever had some issues with HTC Sync not finding ANY contact to sync with the phone?

On my PC it gives no error but it says "0 contacts syncronized", while if I try to sync with Outlook (2007) open, it reports me an error saying it cannot contact Outlook...

Also tried reinstalling HTC Sync, and tried with both the version supplied with the phone and the recently released newer one

Hi,

In all honesty I haven't even tried HTC Sync with the Desire. I tried it at first with my Hero - but with a mix of running Win7 beta and office 2010 beta at the time, all in 64bit, it was just never going to work! At the time I was moving from a WinMo phone, so everything was sync'd with Outlook. Contacts weren't an issue as I simply exported them from outlook into Gmail and spent (a lot of) time tidying them up, it was mostly the Calendar I missed. The "Google Calendar Sync" application wouldn't work for me either, and in the end I gave up electing to just use Google calendar for my needs, and subscribing to that iCal feed in Outlook so that it's visible when I need it without the browser being open. Not perfect but at least for the moment it works, though I do miss some of the features of Outlook's calendar - and the ability to have a reminder at the time of the appointment, rather than it having to be before!

Are you using 32 or 64bit office? I had heard that the most recent HTC Sync was working quite well... Also, perhaps a silly question but I'm assuming that there is a difference between the contacts on your phone and in Outlook? If they are identical I would expect no syncing to occur.

If you are using outlook 2010, try follow the guide below.

1. On your PC, go to the contacts piece of Outlook, export your contact as Comma Separated Values (Windows). Select the Contacts entry from the "Select folder to export from" list.

Finally, name and find a location to save the exported file to, and click Finish.

 

2. Log into your Gmail account on the PC where you exported your contacts. In the Gmail window, choose Contacts. Import Contacts CSV file you save before.

 

3. Now, all you have to do is run the sync on your mobile device. Each phone will handle this differently, but more than likely, all you need do is wait a moment and the device should auto-sync the new contacts.
