Hero update now pushed to June?

This is getting really frustrating. I really like my Hero. I am super happy with MCR3.2, and I am in no hurry getting 2.1 - HOWEVER this is still frickin' annoying. Why can't they just set a date and stick with it? This would have been so much easier had they not announced anything...

Good thing Evo is not coming to Denmark. I would have run out and bought it. ;)

Already a thread on this.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the hero never gets an official update. They have quite a few other handsets now and Android 'froyo' had been spotted on their magic, why are they STILL working on an update which is frankly too late.

This is exactly why I gave up and upgraded to the Desire... I hope they won't screw me about with updates for that phone in 6 months time as well or I'll be seriously p*ssed off...

lol...

no, they won't screw you with that, because they did that only to hero users, because they don't like us in particular.

All I can say is just wait and watch.

I don't get it, why are you guys buying new phones when you can just flash a 2.1 leak? I'm running Villain 5.3 and its as fast and stable as the Modaco release I had on there before. Unless there is something I'm missing?

Am I right in thinking that hardware manufacturers get access to the source before it is made public and that therefore it is likely that HTC had 2.1 prior to it's release date in January and is therefore likely to already have the source for 2.2 (if it's in advanced testing?)

Around Nexus One release time, was there an outcry that HTC had been given the 2.1 (or 2.0/2.01) source prior to other handset manufacturers? Or was I just projecting envy on the Nexus One owners who were snapping up the new hardware?

HTC_NL:

HTC is currently testing new functionality serving update to 2.1 for the Hero. This update will be offered as soon as possible.

I tried VillainRom 5.3 and I gotta say it is slow and laggy compared to Modaco. I really wanted to like it, tried it for a few days and its slowing almost to a halt now and then drove me nuts. Many people praise it and I hope it gets better because Nathan over there did a good job. It is just not fast enough. The keyboard hangs and lags and stick and I just can't deal with that.

Really? I installed VillainRom 5.3 on Saturday and everything works nicely, and the speed is as fast as, if not faster than Modaco 3.2 in my case. I am sticking with it now, until a newer VillainRom or Eclair Modaco comes along.

Did you apply the live wallpaper patch? DON'T. Applying that live wallpaper patch screws everything up. After reflashing VillainRom 5.3 w/o the live wallpaper patch, everything works perfectly (except for live wallpaper, which taxes the Hero CPU too heavily even when it works anyway).

With VillainROM 5.3, I still had 50% battery after 36 hours. I did strip out all the widgets (except clock) and all the social crap, though.

Can't comment on the battery life yet because I have been doing a lot of wireless tethering (basically mean 3G and wifi working hard at the same time!) the past weekend, with my Hero as a mobile hotspot for my iPad =)

I just got 4 full days out of it with 5.2. I'm using JuiceDefender which turns the APN off most of the time which would help a lot though. To be fair it wasn't getting a lot of use at the time, but at least that shows there isn't too much background junk draining power.

VillainROM 5.4 is out now with their own OTA updater which is quite cool.

You haven't cleared out the cache or wiped before installing. I did a fresh wipe, cleared cache and formatted before install and its easily as fast (if not slightly faster) than Modaco.

I downloaded 5.4 last night - terrible, wouldn't even run properly (Even with Wipes) :-( I'll carry on using Defiance 2.1

This clearly shows that you don't even know how to put a custom rom onto your phone.

But anyway, this is Modaco forum, let's leave all VillainRom discussion to their respective forums (villainrom.co.uk)

What a crazy statement! I've been running Modaco 3.1 & 3.2 and now Defiance 2.1, why wouldn't I know know how to put a custom rom on my phone?

This is getting really frustrating.

For me this just moved from being a non-issue to being an annoyance - there's an app I want to try that only supports 2.0+

I always thought operator tie-in was a pain for the delays that introduced, but now I/we have the same issue with an "unbranded" device...

+1

Same as you I thought buying it unbranded would benefit me in the long run. Big mistake.

Now 107 days since 2.1 was realeased publicly. 121 days will make it 1/3 of a year.

I am at peace now.

i am going to wait for the perfect device. i think motorola milestone but i am not going to jump as i did on hero. bye the way people who say google branded phones are updated regularly why not mytouch 3g got updated to 2.1. so either iphone or motorola milestone as second option what do u think people.

i am not going to come back to HTC for sure. same thing is going to happen to desire one year down the line.

If I understand correctly, once you get 2.2 on your phone, you'll be getting OS updates directly from Google. Let's hope we get to 2.2 on the Hero.
