The purpose of this survey is to find out which of my custom ROMs are still being used.

I'm planning to standardize those ROMs (included apps, update drivers, tweaks, ROM size, pagepool etc.) to make them more user friendly and less confusing for newbies....

So if your using my custom ROM for free please participate

There are many ways to say thank you, one way is by clicking below

UNDERSTANDING MY CUSTOM ROMS

If you are confused with my custom ROMs, this post will be a big help for you

MEGAlite- pertains to my custom ROM with free ROM 200-300+Mb, Samsung/WM apps removed and pagepool lower than 10mb.

FULL- many cooks use this term, pertains a ROM with no major files where removed from the ROM, so all original apps/files are included, while having OS or WM build updated.

ROM BASE- pertains to the PDA Version the ROM is based. I'm currently using XXIL2, but planning to use JC1

OS VERSION & WM BUILDS

There are 2 OS version available for our device:

Windows Mobile 6.1- Older OS; tried and tested; stylus oriented; development has ended

Windows Mobile 6.5- Recent OS; Finger Friendly; Eye Candy; Memory Management; development continues

Builds

You can check your WM build in Setting/Sytem/About

This is the Windows Mobile Operating System Build. Different build numbers pertains to different WM version developments. A larger build number doesn't mean it's the latest.

In theory, newer builds will fix some bugs from the older builds and add some major/minor enhancement in the system, but in reality this is not the case.

Newer builds might be buggier than older ones. When builds are released (or more appropriately, leaked :P ), there are no documentations included, so the only way to know if the build is stable or not is to cook them, flash and test. That's why bug reports are always welcome :o

What OS/build to use?

It really depends preferences but these are my thoughts...

Windows Mobile 6.1

6.1- Again tried and tested and stable, most third party apps are compatible with this OS

*21056 - last known 6.1 build

Windows Mobile 6.5.x

WM 6.5.X goal is to gradually take stylus use away (development towards a finger friendly OS),modern UI and some System enhancement(?).

Some B7610 came out from the box with WM 6.5

WM 6.5- finger-friendly;3 stars, most third party apps are still compatible with this OS, MOST STABLE IN THE WM 6.5 developments. Samsung Xclose button works.

*21895- my custom build (i think it's newer than JC2, though 21889 is polished more for B7610)

*21889- from Official JC2

*219xx- newest

WM 6.5.3-finger-friendly;4 stars, third party apps are compatible, but may have problems with screen alignment, added new bottom bar, updated IE,not much UI graphics changed (almost same as 6.5). Still no Official 6.5.3 update for B7610. Developments are still ongoing with 6.5.3.

*Hybrid ROM 6.5.3- i8000 Official 6.5.3 ported to B7610, including some drivers and Samsung Apps.

WM 6.5.5-finger-friendly;5 stars, third party apps are compatible, but may have problems with screen alignment, UI and graphics were completely changed (eye candy  ), updated WM apps. Development is ongoing and fast towards to the maybe last WM 6.5.x, WM 6.5.6/7

*Megalite 6.5.5 23545- discontinued, but if you like it, i'll update it

*Megalite 6.5.5 23547- fast, better memory management

*Megalite 6.5.5 23549- faster, though may eat more memory

Thanks daskalos for all these roms and a poll to get a standard out of it.

Presently I am stuck on 23549, but liked the hybrid a lot. But since it comes with Samsung's flab, till a slimmed down version is available I will go in for 23549. Memory wise I don't find that much difference among the 23549 and 23547 and even hybrid one. Once you switch on phone, gradually memory usage goes up and there is no way that you can clear up memory that efficiently.

So eventually it boils down to how much less your cpu is being used and which determines the overall stability of the rom and I like using slimmed ones a lot.

With few good applications like xtask available for 6.5.x I find this rom equally good.

In my personal opinion all the applications from hybrid can make any slimmed rom best combination. As I mentioned in another post, all the applications in hybrid rom are smaller in size and for a small memory size platform it can be really rewarding.

Actually there is a difference with memory management 23549 and 23547, and confirmed that with Hybrid ROM...

It because of gwes.exe. Back then, I was using 23547 and was impressed with it's memory management, there's not much memory leak and even does not auto close when available memory reaches 20Mb (it autocloses at 18Mb).

In the first version of the Hybrid ROM, memory goes down to 30Mb (when WM slider lock is enabled). In the second Hybrid version, I used 23547 gwes.exe , and so memory, does not go down to 50Mb (WM slider lock enabled)

Hi!

What is the difference between Hybrid Rom 6.5.3 (full) and only Hybrid ROM 6.5.3? Is it the first and second version, or 2.8 and 2.7? Sorry but I'm a little confused

I am using Hybrid 2.7 at the moment, because I wanted the apps to function in landscape. And i like that Rom its fast and have no problems with it concerning my purposes.

Before I had the 23547 because of 'Megalite' cause I was still in the state of trial and error. Tried Manila 1.3 and Sense 2.5 only and together with SPB Mobile Shell, and needed a lot of Space. ;-)

No I'm a bit tired of switching ROMs so I'm stuck with the Hybrid. I like the few changes within Samsungs Apps, the messaging <- or is this from B7610 because the fonts size within the sms are way smaller now, which I'm really glad of.

I would also like to see a Hybrid Lite Rom Or Megalite with Hybrid Apps, which would be a really great solution in my opinion. :P

Thanks again for all ur work. Keep it up!

@daskalos

I know it is not possible, but can we use gwes.exe and shell files of 6.1 in 6.5? If this could be done we will get pretty good scenario working along, and what we stand to lose, few graphics or something more?

Can you pinpoint loss of 3~5mb ram once we slide out the keyboard?

The ROM will not boot

Actually, it's not the keyboards fault, it's because the device works "harder" in landscape mode to render graphics in landscape, that's where 3~5mb ram goes...

I think hardware 2D acceleration is not enabled in landscape or is working on landscape but drivers are not sufficient...

Notice the lag in UI and in third party apps when in landscape mode...

Some software developers made a workaround so that their app don't lag in landscape...

For example, some of Gameloft games like Spiderman is fast even if it is in landscape...Why?

The reality is, the device is rendering the game in portrait though the game seems to be running in landscape :P

I want also to thank daskalos for his awesome work on cooking the megalites. Most time I was using 23545-23547-23549 but I was tired of finetuning them, and presently I am using new JC1 and can say I am very happy with it! Seems faster and with less lag, even on touchwiz. Plus it has pretty much everything you need after the flash.

What I mean, is that sometimes stripped out ROMs can be quite bothersome, i.e.:

- Many apps makes no sense to remove them since everybody is going to install/use them, like Samsung camera app.

- Some files also makes no sense not to be included in the cooked ROM, like .Net Framework 3.5, and HTCSensorSDK.dll (necessary for most gsensor-based games).

One last thing;

Recently I tried POINTUI 2 and experienced a sky-high fast and smooth transition between phone's menus. No lag (see touchwiz), no sssllllloooowww (see HTC Sense 2.5) response, no freezing problems, no ram devouring (see SPB Shell).

What I want to stress is that as users, we should not always seek the remedy on one miraculous ROM that will transpose our B7610 into Android phone. Most of our complaints related to UI and not the entire ROM itself. And some programs out there do indeed miracles.

Daskalos, please exceuse me if it is a silly question but, personally, which of your roms do you consider the best? Which one would you recommend? I am getting confused.

Well for me, I consider these ROMs my Top 3:

3. 6.5 build 21903

- for the reason that 6.5 builds are the most stable ones. And it seems the latest a 6.5 build, the better.

2. Hybrid 6.5.3

- for the reason that the ROM almost made me crazy (it took 30+ times from cooking and flashing, trial and error style). In short the ROM was developed with much effort and came out stable.

1. Megalite 23549

- for the reason I like it lite and fast

Well, I think my top 3 list is going to change if the new builds will be better, I'm currently using (or more appropriately, monitoring) my latest custom ROM build :P

And the 6.5.5 build 23566?

As I said in an earlier post

In theory, newer builds will fix some bugs from the older builds and add some major/minor enhancement in the system, but in reality this is not the case.

The only way to test if this build is stable or not, is by flashing it and using it for a while :P

I love the megalight builds, because anyone can put ontop what he likes, instead of the standart apps.

It saves space, ram and is fast.

But i think you could even go further, with also removing some more stuff and building extra .cabs for it...

I for example dont like any of the microsoft stuff, like internet explorer and media player, instead im using touch player and opera mobile.

As ui i am using spb mobile shell and so on, and still have much more ram available as with an original firmware.

But maybe on the other you could include stuff which enhances the usability for everyone, like the OpenGL compatibility layer by ginkage.

Well, to make it short, i think the megalight builds are great for customizing, keep up the good work ;-)
