Fellow Modacoians,

I had an idea today, and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out with this:

I am planning on getting a new mobile, and didn't want to let my trusty Omnia go to waste.  That said, I am also looking for a WiFi based Skype Phone.  Well, 1+1 made 2 in my mind this morning, and I decided: Why not re-purpose my Omnia to be a WiFi only Skype phone?

I have run into an issue with this, though:

It seems that Skype will only play calls through the speakerphone speaker, and not the handset speaker.  Does anyone know how to correct this?

Also, does anyone see any potential issues with this plan?

Absolutely no issues with the idea that I can think of. In fact, I was actually considering the same once I decide to get the Incredible.

That said, I've also seen the msgs about the speaker phone problem, but haven't seen any fixes per se. Hopefully, someone has one.

To re-purpose your Omnia i910 you can use Skype or a WM softphone.  AgePhone and PortSIP are two that can be used with WiFi connection. I use a Voicepulse Open Access account as my SIP provider. Using a PC with X-Lite and a bluetooth headset I experience crystal clear SIP calls. Since I also have a Verizon Omnia I had high hopes for using AgePhone CE. I figured out how to direct all calls to my bluetooth headset using bagcrtl. Calls work ok with both AgePhone and PortSIP softphones.   Never-the-less, I do experience some echo problems.  From reading various forums, it appears that SDK stack on the Omnia is a bit of a challenge for many softphone vendors.  Skype should work with bagcrtl.

I'm not as interested, personally, in getting BT to work with Skype or any other program (though, I can see why others might find this feature useful).  I would just like the audio to be re-directed to the speaker generally used for calls, not the speakerphone as Skype does now.  I looked into bagcrtl, and it does not appear that it will do what I want it to do with the Omnia.  Thanks for trying, though!

Thanks for those links. One looks like an evolution of the other. The problem with the first one is that once you use it to route the sound there's no "off" switch. You have to soft-reset you phone to get the sound back to the way it is by default. The second one looks like an evolution of the first in that it has a 10 minute automatic reset. It's not clear if it will reset in the middle of a call if you're on the phone for more than 10 minutes.

I found a link to another one, Earpiece Routing which looks like it has even more additions to it. Unfortunately, it is trialware, which costs US$20 for a permanent copy. Haven't tried any of them as I don't have Skype installed on my phone. If you do, give us a review to let us know how/if they worked for you.
