Also now that the cause is known, is it possible to create a flash method that doesn't break it in the first place? Or will we just have to run the fix if we brick in the future?

When i try to download the flash_image file, i just get a new window with a lots of signs in? are the link broken? what size should the file have?

Try doing a 'Save as' instead of just clicking the link.

To me it looks like bug in HTC recovery (kernel), that allows you to write beyong data partition (the next partition on NAND is misc). That explains a lot to me ;-)

with a few struggles, my desire is fixed :( :o

Just started using me Hero since yesterday and got pissed off the slowness of the Hero and the bad screen quality (compared with the desire)
I think you guys really deserve a donation of all the hard work :(

is there any particular reason why you are using 'cat source > destination' instead of 'cp source destination' ?

It's just a guess...

@Paul: would it be possible to release a rooting r6 with some lines of script to backup the misc partition before starting recovery? By doing this each user would have it's original misc.img available just in case something goes wrong. No need to edit a downloaded file, just put it back.
