To Start, dont attack me for bring this topic up, I m not an iPhone fanboi and I have been with Android since the T-mobile G1.

Since iPhone 4 is ought to be hitting the street end of the month, its only fair to start a discussion about what Android has and has not vs this new boy in town. Others might have different opinion, but I think Nexus One is the closest rival iPhone 4 has out there, given it has froyo fresh out of the freezer, and its the flagship of android development.

I ll start by stating what I think Nexus one has and has not vs iPhone 4:

Nexus One has:

1) Flash

2) live wallpaper

3) wifi/USB tether

4) Full google integration/contact sync

5) multiple account support

Nexus One lacks:

1) gosh iPhone 4 looks good (i hate to admit but i do like it, especially the white one)

2) good game app (others might disagree but i m afraid its a simple truth)

3) video call (looks like this is ought to take off with iphone 4)

4) screen (it seems iPhone 4 has a better screen, but i m waiting for others to verify it)

5) long battery life

Now, let the discussion beging, and hopefully someone in Google is reading this too.

P.S. Somehow the white iPhone 4 remind me of the good old t-mobile G1, a slimed down version with metalic casing and without the keyboad :)

soooo unless iPhones have changed their whole design, and i'm not one to really care much about what apple is doing to be honest, I assume the iPhone still lacks a trackball or d-pad or any other type of precision-cursor "device." that has always been among the most frustrating things about the iPhone to me... you can only use 1 app at a time, and ou must go back to the home screen by using the ONE button on it before switching to another application...

*and i'll save the "i hate iPhones" rant for another post =P haha*

but reading from stevie jobster's broadcast they seem have got multi-tasking capability in iphone 4 now. I dont actually see it as a major problem just like the good old multi-touch was not really a problem for Android.

Also the Nexus One has bigger screen. .2 inch is very different for me. I was using iPhone a while ago and I really like the screen size of the Nexus One.

I dont think the screen is so much different. Number of pixels are similiar. And the AMOLED screen of the Nexus One is also very impressive.

but AMOLED screen has the disadvantage of bad visibility under direct sunlight. I dont know if iPhone 4 has that problem.

you should keep your phone out of sunlight anyway to increase pixel life though, no? =)

It seems Evo had brightness setted to minimum..I would like to compare my Nexus one with max one..

Yeah why did they do that. Its unfair. It makes EVO looks worse.

Like a muppet i watched live blogs of the launch.

The iphone4 has some nice features, not enough for me to even consider moving though....

HD video recording.

hi def screen

Apparent longer battery life- we wait to see though!

Cheap (ish)

Ummm....?

As for the rest.....

Multitasking- not all it sounds that i can see, required as many clicks as closing the app and starting again, rather pointless TBH.

Folders - hahaha.

Video calling over Wifi only to other iphone4s... Christ alive! it's 2005 again, no one used it back then, same now.

Glass front AND back- big fail, twice the chance to damage it.

Really, I'm sure there was something else, but I started going 'Meh' after i realised nothing "Amazing" or "revolutionary" (Copyright Steve Jobs) was actually going to be announced.

Sorry Apple, must try harder, the speed Android devices are moving the iphone4 will be seriously outdated by Christmas.

The glass isn't a problem. They had a video of the manufacturing, and they were bending it to a 45 degree angle at the center and it didn't crack or break. This is NOT the same type of glass on the current iPhones.

Other than the screen which sounds nice, but realistically, a bit excessive on something that physically small. There's nothing very special there that our N1's can't already do. If HTC could shoehorn Apple's battery tech into their phones it'd be nice though.

The hardware is just a refinement, not a big jump, and the new iOS 4 is still limited in the same ways that stopped me buying one in the first place (no local file storage/access, pathetic bluetooth support, STILL no custom SMS tones etc). Good phone for the general populace, but once you look past how pretty it looks, the Evo is the superior phone IMO.

Videorecording would be nice for some (some guys at XDA reckon the N1 should be able to be made to do 1280x720 recording). I think most of it comes down to the improved screen and faster CPU, which I believe is still a 1Ghz unit with much the same capabilities as the one in the Nexus/Evo. It does have a superior (I believe) GPU which makes it better for games (which admittedly would have the potential to look amazing on that screen).

Very nice device, but I'll keep my N1 :)

Whatever you all say:

iPhone would sell many more than NexusOne.

There would be masses of buyers the night before opening apple stores out there.

It is every launch the same.

It's a hysteria about all what apple done.

If Steve J sits on the toilet and fart, the whole apple community claps their hands and praise him.

But: the successfulness if iPhone is okay. It's a great phone, it's easy t use and looks very nice.

As the first iPhone comes out to the market, no one has a phone with this usability! That are facts.

So apple gets his hysteria.

especially in terms of design, Apple beats HTC/Google hands down 2:0

functionality wise, Android has many advantage over iphone, but Android needs a better flagship device that makes the userbase grow. unfortunately I dont think our Nexus One is quite there yet. Nexus One was never really a looker, but it made up with a better platforms. Unfornattely again, most people dont care about rooting, unlock, custom ROM. To get people use it, it needs a solid design and attraction.

Motorola Droid was a good shot, HTC Legend was a nice attemp, HTC Evo 4G is very close, but none of them are there yet. side by side all of them are rough around the edge vs iPhone 4.

We need a better looking Nexus.

iOS 4 has gimped multitasking. Devs can only keep certain APIs running, not any part of the app they wish.

The iPhone 4 only has 256MB of RAM. That's rather lackluster.

How does Apple win in terms of design? I can't wait for the issues from having your antenna wrapped around your phone and glass on both sides. I don't care what it says, people will badword up the glass.

The Nexus One is damn sexy imo. Thought it looked better than the iPhone 3G by a lot. Definitely has a nicer feel in your hand.

If Google markets the Nexus One, they could sell quite a few units. Especially if they drop the price soon. The Nexus One basically had zero marketing, so no one should be surprised that it didn't exactly sell a crapload of units. I think Google was afraid of pissing off their main manufs. What the Nexus One did do was raise the bar for all future superphones.

I know design is a matter of taste but I m fairly sure if the new iPhone 4 runs Android 2.2 plenty of people will switch to iPhone from Nexus One, but if Nexus One runs iphone OS, i doubt many iPhone fanatics will switch to N1.

agree with u on google s afraid of losing manufacturer's support, which is a limit in its own way: they want to leave room for manufacturers to built good qualify android phone, but if u want to stay on top of software u ll need a google own brand phone. just look at what HTC has done with Hero, i can only remember the disappointment even now my Hero runs android 2.1.

I would not switch from my Nexus to iPhone (IF iPhone could run 2.2)... just helping out the unofficial poll lol

+1 on this, I'm not all that fused on iPhone's previous styling or the stying used on the iPhone 4.

I don't like the iphone OS, but the hardware is quite impressive and far better than our N1, especially in the camera department.

However, Just give me an EVO with a better battery and I would take it in a heartbeat over both N1 and iphone4.

iphone is not meant for power users who wants full control of the phone, but rather a recreational phone with features of a smartphone; it is simple to use, quick and responsive, and locked down so tight, you couldnt do much with it unless you really try. however, the app market of iphone is really amazing, brush aside the thousands of fart/beer apps, some top notch developers really put up a good numbers of amazing apps and games in the market that we (read: me) android users envy

i feel google should stop letting crappy manufacturers put this amazing OS on any devices, and just lock the resolution (wvga, hvga) and hardware (snapdragon, a8) down to tiers, so there is a standardization that the developers could follow and create better and more unified apps

All I really want to say is that I'm glad iPhone is playing catchup, and doing a few excellent hardware things all high-end phones should copy.

1) supposedly great camera, using that really new tech where the wires are behind the sensor instead of the front(i remember reading about this development last year or so!)

2) The case that acts as an antennae. Does it work? Well... it sounds like a good solution to the lack of external antennae.

3) Super-high resolution screen. We are at the age of tech where we can do this, but I hope they can do that high with OLED. I can't live without my OLED screen.... current iPhone is super-washed out compared to my N1.

Still madly in love with my N1(all my iPhone friends envy N1's sleek exterior), and looking forward to developments like CyanogenMod 6.0 :)

Yeah, and I've seen the video of the Nexus one being tumbled and dropped as part of it's testing.... guess where mine is at the moment? Being repaired due to being dropped from 2ft- in it's case as well!

I'll believe it when I see it, along with the claimed battery life- the desire has a longer claimed standby time than the new iphone (360 hours)and we know how long that battery lasts!
