The XDA X10 team released today Sunday June 27th... a working root method!!

Root itself won't allow to flash custom ROMs, or 2.1, 2.2, at least not directly, but will make such goals inminent.

not sure if this has been posted yet but there is a very simple, one tap app (available on the market) Z4ROOT

installed it on my X10, one tap, 3 mins later and my device was rooted B)
