I am thinking of producing my own short film. Essentially, i want to superimpose an animation type character onto a real background.

Does anyone know the kind of software that'll do that. The animation figure will be very very very simple.. I mean stick man simple.

Or will it require some hardcore Lucas Film type software and hardware with the maddest graphics accelerators?

Why not download a copy of Macromedia Studio MX, or just Macromedia Flash?  You can get demoware for both of them, not sure how long it lasts though.  Think it's only about 14 days or something, but enough time to play about with the tools, and all you need is a browser.
