Guest DistortedLoop Posted July 23, 2010 Report Share Posted July 23, 2010 Has anyone had success with getting the SGS recognized on a Mac in a VMWare virtual machine or any of its competitors (Parallels for Mac, Virtual Box)? Difficult for me to find a real Windows box to flash firmwares with, but not much luck getting the drivers in a vm to actually mount the phone. Any ideas? I tried with Parallels and VMWare Fusion, but so far no success. The problem seems to be that the timing over the USB interface is highly critical, and the VMs can't provide that. Yeah, in Fusion I get the device listed as available to connect, but it disappears if I try. I hate having to find an XP box just for this. I thought the days of doesn't-work-on-a-Mac were pretty much behind us with most devices. I'll try with Virtual Box, I guess, but I'm not optimistic. Guest DistortedLoop Posted July 23, 2010 Report Share Posted July 23, 2010 just istall win through bootcamp everything works Well, sure it would work with bootcamp, since bootcamp means you're booting into Windows directly and Windows has direct access to the hardware. :( But for some of us, bootcamp is not a desireable option on our Macs. Total waste of space in my opinion, and it means having to exit out of running Mac to get to it. Guest jodue Posted July 27, 2010 Report Share Posted July 27, 2010 got it working with virtualbox (full not OSE, beause of usb support) with windowsXP on a ubuntu 10.04 guest os. it's important to install the sgs usb drivers, otherwise odin won't recognize the device (i used those: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/S...dows-x86.shtml). after that it worked well. just when flashing the first time odin hang on "checking files" but i think that is an other problem. i unplugged it and then tried again and it worked! altogether it works but having to use windoze is a pain in the ass. also odin kinda sux. in contrast, fastboot is simple/nice/clean and works with *nix! Your link to the drivers isn't quite right, but it's easy enough to get to the right place from there. I'm confused what your setup is. Your computer is primarily Ubuntu 10.04? The guest OS is XP in Virtual Box? Good to know that works, but doesn't get me any closer with my Macs. I actually have an older MacBook Pro that I rarely use and wouldn't mind putting Mac Boot Camp on it if I must. I also like the idea of a bootable USB stick with XP and the needed drivers. Using 32bit windows 7 in vmware running on OSX 10.6.4 :) Although I have windows 7 install on bootcamp as well but its great to not have to reboot just to load a kernel!! Very nice! I see it is up to v1.0 now and the linux version is out as well. Been using Odin in VMWare (linux) here, had no problems.
