Orange UK branded Desire on 1.15 - FroYo RUU?

I've had my Desire since Orange launch day and have put up with the branding for this long because of the 1.21 simlock issue. Now I'm looking to debrand and go for an official FroYo ROM, my question is will a new official RUU appear and if so when? Is it likely that when one does appear it will still simlock my phone during the upgrade? I'm not interested in rooting just yet.

Thanks in advance :)

I think you have to wait till orange release it's own froyo version. As far as i know theres currently no release date yet.

I hated the Orange branding and usless demos so rooted soon after getting my Desire. What's the issue with rooting? I just bought a sim unlock for under a tenner and now have the latest radio version with Froyo about to go on today. Seriously man, the stock Orange rom is crippled becuase of the amount of space all the apps and demos take up. Ok it's going to be better with 2.2 as you can choose to install (some) apps to the SD, but with A2SD and a 16gig card you're laughing.

Jep, you're right. I think for branded devices root and an "offiziell unbranded rom" is the best way to deal with the brandings.

From the looks of it I'm probably going to have to just go for a stock debranded RUU and unlock it along the OTA path to FroYo. I don't mind having an unlocked phone obviously, but to be honest I could do with that £8 for other things :)

I debranded within a couple of weeks and noticed a difference (I am on Orange also). I have now rooted the phone and been using Froyo in different flavours since mid June. Excellent - never had much of an issue at all. The simlock issue - best to deal with this by going online for a simunlock code and (I paid £17 but there are cheaper options) its very easy and means you don't need to worry again

There are some reputable ebay sellers doing codes for £8 so I guess I'll have to shell out. I've got my goldcard sorted so I'll probably give it a go when I have some phone downtime.

Think I'll go for a debranded 1.15 and then to patch on the 2.1 OTA via the recovery console, will that work? There's a slim chance of it not simlocking I guess, don't think I've seen anyone else try it.

I have an Orange Desire and would be very interested to hear anybody else's stories, I read that without network unlocking you can't use the radio that's included in the standard Froyo update?

Please can you clarify what you mean by the 1.21 simlock issue? My handset is already sim locked? Or do you mean that this version will not accept network unlock codes?

I'm about to use mybackup and create a goldcard then flash generic WWE 1.15 with the same radio version as it currently has, slightly apprehensive about going from there..

Thanks in advance!

As far as I know there's an issue with the radio that comes bundled with the 1.21 update that simlocks Orange branded phones, i.e. they reject all SIM cards (even Orange ones) and insist on a network unlock code before you can actually use it as a phone. You can get round it by flashing to an earlier radio but that requires root access I think. There was also a problem with some people losing wi-fi functionality with the 1.21 update, these reasons were partly why Orange haven't released an official 1.21 OTA update.

This is all to the best of my knowledge: I've been messing with WM phones for years, hence the join date, but I'm pretty noobish when it comes to Android :)

I have an Orange UK desire.

i have debranded it ( used wwe 1.15 ), rooted it and sim unlocked it. used an ebay selleer, quick and cheap ( about £8 )

accepted the 1.21 update but used a goldacard to install it from, i had to disable signature checking in the recovery menu to flash the update then had to root it again (use unrevoked with ubuntu, it is easy ). when froyo came out yesterday i popped my goldcard in and tried flashing it but found that i had boot into recovery disable signature checking and flashed it, not rooted it yet but runs lovely i have no issues.

if you have questions PM me

I had an orange branded desire 1.15.

I rooted using unrevoked 3.

Bought an unlock sim code from ebay for £7. Unlocked the sim

Installed r5_modaco rom.zip, had to flash a radio (5.08) because the modaco rom didn't have one.

When 2.2ota was released I flashed the rooted(+busybox) rom released by nickiberli on xda.

then flashed the latest radio (5.09)

Rebooted a couple of times.

Every thing works great apart from market thumprint etc..

Not checked the green hued camera yet.

I never had to make a gold card.

the one issues with this is that if you install the OTA froyo update it is highly likely that it will also update your HBOOT and thus make your phone un-rootable. Best to wait until paul removes the HBOOT update and repackages the ROM....

Have you tried rooting your new froyo ROM yet? Let us know if it works, but I suspect it wont :)

I too am trying to find out the answer to this question: what radio do you need for Froyo? Especially what radio will be needed for Paul's upcoming official Froyo MCR.

My story is i have an Orange UK Desire that i rooted r6 method and then installed MCR R3.1 so my info is as follows:

Firmware Version: 2.1-update1

Baseband version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2

Kernal Version: 2.6.29-bravo-mck-r1-paul@Paul-OBriends-iMac #2

Build number: 1.32.MCR.2 CLxxxxxxx release-keys

Software number: MCR r3.1

Browser version: Webkit 3.1

So what i want to do is have the upcoming MCR froyo rom but ideally without unlocking my phone (if i have to i will but it's more appealling not to) so what radio do i need to have or which can i use without unlocking my phone AND how do i go about getting hold of it?

Sorry in advance if it's bad form to jump in here but it seems a relevant topic for my problem. I have an Orange branded Desire:

Firmware Version: 2.1-update1

Baseband version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2

Kernel Version: 2.6.29-0cb9f166

Build number: 1.21.405.2 CL174215 release-keys

Software number: 1.21.405.2

Browser version: Webkit 3.1

I reflashed the phone with an HTC standard image following instructions found here and elsewhere to create a 'goldcard' and flash the phone.

I then tried two unlock code suppliers and neither of them could supply a usable unlock code (one of them, HTCCode.com has yet to refund my payment).

(One of the unlock code suppliers suggested that I might need to wait for a new HTC code database to be released).

I put an Orange PAYG SIM in the phone and it worked for a week or so.

I then accepted a software update (presumably to the version given above) which seemed to go ok.

When I restarted the phone (with PAYG or any other SIM) I'm now asked for an unlock code.

I have been given 'appropriate' unlock codes for PAYG and contract SIMs by Orange - neither have worked.

There seems to be information in this forum about an acknowledged SIM-lock problem with Orange Desires but I'm struggling to relate this to my specific problem and/or figure out what to try next. Ultimately I want to get this phone unlocked so I can use it on my O2 contract.

Can anyone suggest where to go from here?

Am I likely to have any success through further calls to Orange?

Do I perhaps need to flash with different firmware and/or 'root' the device?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

The only way to go is to unlock the phone. I used htcsimunlock.com, it can take them up to 24 hours to get the code if they have to go to Orange/HTC for the code though.

I have an orange HTC desire black ed; have rooted and been using various roms for a couple of months.

Last night I decided the time had come to try out the various newer froyo roms floating about - which require a radio update. Wary of the sim-lock issues orange users have posted about, I'd never updated the radio before.

So, I ordered an unlock code off eBay for 8 quid and updated my radio.

The radio update (to the latest .20 version) went fine. I was NOT sim-locked though! So I kinda wasted 8 quid, but oh well. I haven't even had the chance to test if the unlock code I was given works /o\

TL;DR I'm an Orange user and updated to official froyo release radio and wasn't sim-locked. I advise you try the update before buying a code!

That's what I was hoping for, what were you using before you updated? Did you update OTA or using the recovery?

I was running various froyo builds, with the radio the phone came with. I updated to cyanogen nightly and the 'official' froyo radio via recovery.

Update on my Orange UK Desire ... further to advice given here I decided to have another go at obtaining an unlock code and tried htcsimunlock.com as recommended. I quite quickly (30 mins or so) had a valid unlock code and now have a fully working Desire with unbranded software on my O2 contract - success!

I'd just add for anyone searching for unlockers my comments on the three I've tried (if there's a more useful place to post this, please let me know):

1) htcunlock.org aka xpresscodes.com (?) aka totalgsm.org. Paid $20 (£13.62). Was told unlock code unavailable for my phone but might be in new database to be released (by HTC) shortly - did I want to wait, or refund? Asked for refund (repeatedly) and have yet to receive it, no replies to my emails. Scammers?

2) primomobile.net via ebay. $10.90 (£7.42). Also reported code unavailable. Refund provided immediately. Legit business.

3) htcsimunlock.com. $22.01 + $21.11 (total $43 or £28). Working code provided. Legit business, muted endorsement. The headline unlock code charge on their website is $15.75. This becomes $22 with VAT and a mysterious surcharge. They then claimed the code was unavailable (believable from my previous experience) but could perhaps be obtained via "deep search" at additional (refundable) charge of $14.99 (which became $21). I trusted their refund assurances and the recommendation given here, paid the additional "deep search" fee, and very quickly received a valid code.

I've had enough messing around with this to be pleased to have a working phone at cost of £28 when the alternative was starting to look like a 3 month wait and a code from Orange for £30. If you're looking for a code, I recommend trying the ebay seller primomobile.net - the price is what it says it is, and they will refund if necessary.

Thanks for the help,

Mark

I have finally managed to downgrade my (originally Orange branded) Desire to 2.1 after a boot loop issue.

I installed froyo via OTA and everything is fine, bar the fact my sim card is not recognized.

I bricked the phone previously so had to purchase a sim unlock.

I had to to a full system wipe in recovery prior to downgrading, would this have affected my supposedly unlocked Desire?

I am currently on 2.10.405.2

my radio version is 5.09.05.30_2, with a boot loader of .93.

However, currently the phone is not recognizing when I insert my Orange SIM. Not asking for an unlock code, just displays " please insert sim"

what have I done wrong?

thanks in advance
