T-Mobile USA 3G Dell Streak data being blocked

So, I have an AWS variant of the Dell Streak which I'm using on T-Mobile USA. I've had it for a bit over a month now and from about August 1 - September 1, it worked fine data-wise. Then around 4pm on September 1, I started getting directed to http://wipcore.t-mobile.com/webconnect.html - where one is informed that the device being used is detected as a webconnect device and needs an appropriate data plan.

At first they just attempted to reset/refresh my account settings - that didn't work. One tech attempted to go through checking the APN - that didn't work either. And that's as far as they want to touch it. Nobody I talk to seems to apparently know what webconnect devices are or make the connection that the only reason you get to that site is if your phone model is being flagged in their system as having an imei they are not allowing on their regular data plans.

So I'm now at the pretty annoyed stage. Because while most of my day is spent in locations with ok to great wifi coverage, there are times when I'm out and about where I'd need network connectivity and don't have time to spend hunting for available wifi - if I need to look up directions, quickly check-in somewhere on Foursquare, check something in my Inbox - I'm screwed.

hey, i'm so glad you posted this since i posted something similiar on xda. I too have a tmobile aws model and have had it working fine up until the new firmware from 02. ever since then when i attempt to go to the internet i get redirected to the http://wipcore.t-mobile.com/webconnect.html site. i have flashed every firmware between 1.6 to 2.1 official hoping something would change. i've also called customer service and went through the same steps as you. nothing works!! do you think it is the imei that is being flagged? i thought only at&t were jerks, i hope i'm wrong and this is just a mistake on tmobiles part.

In my case, I experienced the problem first while running the 2.1 beta. Then after it happened, I upgraded to the official 2.1, still had the same problem. I had a long discussion with a tmobile rep online. He refused to believe that t-mobile was doing some imei blocking or escalate it to someone who would know. He claimed that sim cards for webconnect devices have voice blocked and that's how they differentiate the devices on the network. However, that doesn't really make too much sense.

His other claim was that maybe there was some update that occurred that I didn't know about. Ultimately, they defaulted to the "well, since we don't support it, I can't do anything further".

BTW, when did your issue start or when did you first notice it?

perhaps they're preparing to launch toe dell looking glass tablets on t-mobile and they flagged all dell iemi numbers to webconnect. looking glasses are due in october according to the tmo leaked roadmap on engadget.

also, are you guys in tmobile with the $30 unlimited data or the $10 one? they were being really picky when i used tmobile with my at&t one. i had a $6.99 t-zone unlimited from years ago that i had to upgrade to $9.99, and eventually i was blocked and asked to go to the $29.99, which then i refused because it's total bs paying over $10 for extremely slow edge connections.

well i have good news mixed with bad. the good is that after talking to a rep today i was switched over to the smartphone internet plan from the android unlimited. after a few hours my internet worked =) but then later on when i went to go check it again it was once again redirecting me to the webconnect page. so i dont think it's the imei that are being blocked but something else entirely.....i just dont know what.

Umm. . .my data plan doesn't cost $30, but it is unlimited data. I double checked with the rep I spoke with today - he confirmed that my data plan should cover the phone.

After this morning's conversation, they are trying unprovisioned internet with my account. If that doesn't work, I'll have them try smartphone next.

Hmm, have they given you any reason for why it would work then stop?

This is annoying. On another forum, I've had one non AWS user on T-Mobile state that his acct is still fine. I'm waiting to see if I hear from anyone else.

It is looking like this is a problem that is only hitting AWS dell streaks on t-mobile. So far, non AWS versions, whether they were bought originally in the UK or US are still working fine on T-Mobile with Edge.

Even though my phone is already unlocked, I'm thinking of giving Rebel Sim a try. The problem is I'm pretty broke right now. . . grr.

I've tried finding details on how exactly it works, but I'm not sure. From what I've read, it intercepts connections between the SIM and network and masquerades your phone as one that is either unlocked or free to be used on the network. If it serves as a sort of firewall between the mobile provider and the phone, it could mask whatever t-mobile is using to block our AWS streaks.

haha, if you're in LA, i'd trade you an at&t fully unlocked engineering sample for the tmobile one.

That sounds interesting, might have to give that a shot. Where can I purchase a rebel sim from if I'm in the us. Chicago specifically.

Aside from vinokirk here, the rebelsim website. Unfortunately, their shipping cost to the US is kinda ridiculous.

I'm going to hold onto mine for a bit. I found Navdroyd - a GPS navigation app where you download the maps for US, Canada, etc ahead of time. Navigation was one of my biggest issues with not having internet on the go. We'll see if that is enough to tide me over while I wait for a fix.

I've already tried switching back to an 00 build. That didn't work either.

Hey buddies,

I really think you guys should give Rebel-Sim Card a Shot because it might remove the T-Mobile blockage off of your device. You don't have to order Rebel Sim card from its website where the total cost is ridiculous ($70).....but you can get it on Ebay for only $15....that's hell of a difference and even if it won't work it wouldn't be that much of a loss you know, you should give it a try for $15 on Ebay.....good Luck

Thee ones that I have seen on ebay are for iphones. I have not seen any programmers on ebay so those would not be useful for the dellstreak.
