2.1 Likes and Dislikes!

Ok, so 2.1 is here for the GT540 and things look to be going well!

Then, I thought....

What are the differences? What do I like and dislike about the new OS that has taken over my phone!

And then I thought.....Why not ask everyone else too!!!

So, here goes.....

Like : The speed of it....Man, it's got quick since the change! I can set any music to be your ringtone now!!!

Dislike: How all my contacts disappeared! (Shoulda backed up, really!!). The difficulties in putting in my email settings for my college email system! (And I work there, so I KNOW the settings!!!)

More to come, but I shall be playing with my phone, this evening, to find out what else has changed!

Didn't you automatically sync your contacts with Google? As if you re-enter your gmail account they re-appear.

You should have saved your contacts as google contacts, then they would have automatically appeared back on the phone once you had added your google account.

My likes:

FINALLY more apps available in the app store, and all the decent ones we couldnt get before.

Browser is now HTML5 compliant,

Phone seems to run smoother and faster.

Live wallpapers are quite cool, although dont know how they affect battery life or system performance

Contacts list seems more organised, and i quite like the quick conmtact menu that you can get in contacts and messaging which shows all avilable actions such as mail, sms, call etc..

Dislikes.

Web browser has no way of completely exiting anymore. In 1.6 you just pressed menu, then exit. This seems to have disappeared in 2.1.

What happened to the page previews of all the web browser tabs currently open. In 1.6 you pressed menu, then windows and it gave you a page preview of all the currently open ones, in 2.1 it just gives you a text list. Much preferred the old style.

Wifi doesnt seem to hold its connection after long periods of inactivity. In 1.6 I set the wifi sleep policy to never, and it would stay permanantely connected. However in 2,1 with the it also set to to never sleep, if i leave it on overnight for example like las tnight, or for a few hours it seems as though the wifi icon disappears frmo the top bar and its no longer connected to wifi, and for some reason it doesnt drop back onto "mobile network" like it should do. The only way to get back to the wireless network is to switch off wifi then switch back on, and when switching it off, the phone then correctly pick up the mobile network for 3g etc.

Will edit this post as i find more things to add to the list of likes and dislikes.

The contacts are now shagged. In 1.6, you could import from SNS and edit them freely. Now, you can import them and that is it. You cannot add a number to an exisiting Facebook contact in your phone, which is really disappointing.

Currently trying to figure out a work-around. Suffice to say, I prefer the 1.6 contacts. Apart from that, though, it's all pretty neat.

Just found another dislike too.

Why does it display phone numbers with dashes between the numbers.

In 1.6 It used to just display the number as on, for example 12345678901

Now in 2.1 it displays them as 123-456-78901 is there any way to change this, it kinda makes the numbers look awkward to read..

I was thinking the EXACT same thing earlier.

I presumed there would be a way to change the format in which numbers are displayed in the settings somewhere, but there isn't.

If dashes are the only setting for numbers, that's because it isn't a local ROM. And due to my Obsessive Compulsive nature, I will be updating the ROM to a UK one when it becomes available, JUST because I don't like dashes. :lol:

In regards to what I posted above about contacts. If you punch the number into the dialer then click your left menu bumper, and save the contact, naming it the EXACT same as the Facebook contact you imported, it'll automatically update it with the Number. You just can't do it in the Contacts section itself.

Yes, thats prt of the reason i want to update to the UK ro. Or at least im hoping it will be possible to flash to the UK rom and not be stuck with this one and unable to change to uk version.

Like:

New Android home screen look and feel, also that it allows for 5 screens and not just 3. I actually prefer the Android home screen to the LG home screen, contrary to when I was on 1.6.

Pressing call button now allows to tab to keypad rather than just contacts / log.

Live wallpapers.

Yahoo Mail app now available to me (doesn't work on 1.6).

Dislike:

Cannot use XT9 for entering text into Android Market search window, Quick Search window, Dolphin Browser HD address bar or Browser (stock) address bar,

Device can be slow and unresponsive at times, just as on 1.6. I'd hoped that 2.1 would have helped this.

Voice search doesn't work any more.

Calendar defaults to Sunday as start of week and not Monday. This was "fixed" by selected the English (UK) locale, however said locale is not present in the Baltic 2.1 ROM.

Voice search works just fine, I think you might have to install the TTS service for it to work, but not sure.

and that i finaly can install things like the official twitter app an google goggles. :lol:

Not sure: Phonebook better, but more complicated, also the things with the dashes in the numbers...

Energy saving menu now black, Browser.

Dislike the Menu. Old one had a nice background. New one don't.

2.1 IS meant toa low you to speak imput into any kind of text box, wether it be SMS, browser address bar, google search etc..

Now..one thing..for the UK people who aren't American or Westernised to the point of contacts looking like 000-0000-000, you can remedy this.

Go to the market, download "MoreLocale 2", it's only 60kbs, so tiny file size, run it(you only need to run it once, and never again), select English, from the ISO639 window, then select United Kingdom, from the ISO3166 window.

* Hint: United Kingdom is underneath "Gabon" in the A-Z listing :lol: , I assume for GB.

Then select "Set", and that's it, no more hyphenated contacts.

This unlocks all the locales on the software, so handy for everywhere around the world really.

For all other people, this might help with keyboard or language issues with your locale...

There are a ton of locales, and I mean looooooads.. in this programme, so it might help a bit, for individual needs.

---- The other method is export contacts to SD, copy the file to pc to sort them out there, groups, de-hyphenated, etc, de-select phone and Sim contacts on the phone, selecting google contacts only, then import to google from pc, then sync to phone.

Voice to text/call is 2.2 only..Google changed the goalposts a month or so ago.

what you get on 2.1 is the ability to download Voice Search....

Google Goggles currently works for me on 1.6, it didn't at first, but after an update it started behaving.

Rather good fun it is too.

in 1.6 all numbers were written with dashes ... on my rom :? so no difference for me :lol:

There's an app in the market called "Voice Search"? Not for me there isn't. Nothing by that name at all.

Voice search worked for me on 1.6 UK CPW ROM (out of the box), however stopped working when I flash 1.6 HK ROM and, as I mentioned, also doesn't work on this 2.1 Baltic ROM.

Hey qwerta. I notice you said you flashed to a different 1.6 ROM.

I was just wondering how easily you did that and was it sucessful with doing a flash that wasnt really an upgrade, cos basically it was a flash frmo 1.6 to 1.6.

Did you ever go back to the CPW rom again after, and if so, was it just as thought you had never touched a thing after and everythign went back to exactly hwo the phone came out of the box.

Only reason Im asking is beacuse im trying to find out how difficult it will be to flash my phone to the UK (possibly CPW_ 2.1 rom when it comes out over here, as i currently have the baltic 2.1

My phone also came with v10a CPW

Also just out curiosity.. What was your reason to flashing to the HK 1.6 ROM? I never had any problems with v10a myself.
