HD7 or Omnia 7

I'm having a right dilemma over which device to get. It's between the Omnia and the HD7. I really like the sound of the SAMOLED screen and I suppose that's the only tipping point for me. I've had the original HD and more recently the Hero and Milestone so am tempted to go back to HTC for one special reason; ROMS.

I suppose it's only a matter of time until somebody gets Custom ROMS running on WP7 and I know the HD7 will probably be at the forefront of them on XDAs. The Samsung though will probably be left behind or with far fewer to choose from.

Why am I posting on here you're probably wondering? Because I'm looking for somebody to say "yeah, go with the HD7! The screen isn't ALL that different" lol.

So is anybody else having a similiar indecision? I'm currently with Tmob due for upgrade on 24 Oct though was thinking of canceling, buying the HD7 sim free and using a giffgaff sim @ £10ppm. Don't have to agree to any ridiculous 2 year contracts then (which by the way - when the hell did that happen!) compared to the 12 month one I'm almost finishing.

Thoughts?

Yeah hate 2 yr contracts. The offline prices of the phones haven't really risen yet the standard deal now is 24 months. My first one2one contract in 1995 was 9 months with a 'lemon' clause that I could pick any other handset should mine need repair more than 3 times.

Only way I'll take a 2yr contract is if it's cheap per month and they'll give me a 2yr warranty. But I digress.

Buy a HD7 payg. No need to unlock for giffgaff but IIRC their internet offer ends december. Haven't seen any other models in real life so to truly decide you would need to have them side by side IMO.

This is kinda where I was heading though seeing the Poll results so far has put another wrench in the works! Five people have said Omnia 7 for sure as opposed to 1 for the HD7! 3 undecided too so kinda glad it's not only me.

Would be interested to hear the feedback from those who have opted for the Omnia over the HD.

I was stuck between these two (plus the Mozart almost got a look in) - couldn't get an Omnia on launch day, not that I'm worried now though - soon as I got the HD7 in my hand I knew it was what I wanted - feels great as your using it.

I'm sure in a direct comparison the screen doesn't match up to the Omnia but when used independently it still looks pretty decent to me - plus I'm using the light theme so the advantages of AMOLED would be lost a little there.

Camera seems more than acceptable at the moment - stills and video - I'm guessing the Omnia may be a little better in this respect but thats a trade I'm happy to make for the screen real estate and look of the device!

Having read about the bugs with HTC WP7 handsets, the inferior build quality of the HD7 compared with the HD2, the inferior materials of the HD7 compared with the Desire HD and EVO 4G, and the numerous reviews that highlight the surprisingly poor display on the HD7 (from comments that it's simply unremarkable to those highlighting weak contrast levels, and poor comparisons with even the Trophy and Mozart), I've taken the plunge and ordered the Omnia 7.

That said, I've got the HD2 already, and I'm really frustrated by the fact that - from a hardware point of view - the HD7 is basically the same handset in a less appealing package. The Omnia 7 obviously has very similar specs, but in a matte aluminium body, and with that absolutely stunning AMOLED screen, and that for me represents a reasonable upgrade over the handset I've already got.

I am kind of swaying more to the Omnia but not sure I like the idea of a 2 year contract. If I buy the sim free HD7 then I can upgrade whenever I want as I won't have any contractual agreements to worry about. I don't think the Omnia is being sold sim free is it?

Also, any comparisons on the screen sizes anywhere? Just how much of a difference does the 0.3" make? I've seen pictures side by side and it looks considerable smaller though would like to get an idea of an above shot (i.e. sketch of the screen size placed on top of another). This is where I wish I were better at Art! lol

I wanted and voted for the the Omnia7 but due to availability and P&G I have ordered the HD7.

After the Omnia2 AMOLED is stunning and it's a shame I will be going away from it.

I've decided to do the same thing and gone with the HD7. Just called Tmob to cancel my contract and they've offered me a cracking deal. 24 Month Contract for £5 a month which gives 300 xmins, unlimited texts & unlimited net! Found it hard to say no!

Just need to get my HD7 and unlock it now. Roll on Thursday (payday!)

battery life was the worry for me with the HD7. The EVo 4g was terrible. but i love the slim format and 4.3 inch screen

which in my opinion is the perfect size.

Am taking my HD7 back today - have replaced it with a Omnia 7 instead.

A real shame cause I think the HD7 feels like a really quality piece of kit. Unfortunately the battery life is terrible - the Omnia is waaaay better already after only a single charge (and I've used it more too). The other negatives are two of HTCs achilles heals imo - Speakers and Camera. Couldn't believe how much better and louder the Omnia is - even on simple notifications and ringtones let alone games. HTC really do need to improve the speakers in pretty much all their devices imho. Camera is the same tbh - Omnia much more proficient in this respect also.

Its a shame as I said as I really liked the feel of the HD7 - feels more expensive than the Omnia and I really like the screen - it actually looks more natural than the Omnia while still having pretty decent black levels!

I doubt you'd be disappointed with either but the Omnia ticks the more important boxes for me.

How do you find the screen sizes differ, i.e. how much of a difference does that .3" make? Tempted by the Omnia still and have until Thursday to make my decision (that's when I get paid!) but have yet to see the Omnia Sim Free anywhere and no longer need a contract.

I take it you brought the omnia 7 handset only? How much did that set you back?

No I got it on 3! Took the HD7 back within my 14 day return period.

It does make a difference but the Omnia is still big enough imo - it's far more manageable single handed and the screen looks great - using the black theme you can't tell where the screen ends and the surround starts!

It all comes down to personal preference I guess bu the Omnia is the better all round device imho.

Well I've just orded the HD7 from O2. I think, had the Omnia been available Sim-Free, I would have gone for that instead of the HD7 but will see how I feel once I get my hands on the HD7. Just hope I'm going to be impressed :P

just bit the bullet and ordered the Omnia 7.

Trying to decide between Android and WP7 was hard enough but then I had to choose between HD7, Mozart and Omnia 7!

It all just came down to the S AMOLED

But I'm gonna miss swype so much..

Swype was the only reason why I started texting a bit more.

before that I would always just call the person instead and use texting as a last resort.

...oh my gosh .. . i remember that cintract (Mercury 121)along with the unlimited of peak local calls! all of the numbers began with 0956. . .

o.k. i dwell in the past and have nothing to say on this topis. i apologise...sorry.

actually, whilst on the subject of giffgaff...i'm testing it now. seems a little complicated when you're used to traditional mindset of contract and payg. but could be a good competitor for the other networks, even it does seem like a bit of an experiment on O2's part. two year contract . .. baahhhh not me buddy! buy the handset off some auction site second hand etc.
