First (obvious) question is why buy the HD if you dont' like Sense??

You can use LP but you won't have the Sense widgets, you should still have access to HTCSense.com, though

lol, good answer

further explanation...

if you use a sense rom which is based on htc's rom then you will always probably be able to use htcsense.com regardless what launcher you decide to use.

using an AOSP build rom (not out there yet at time of writing) such as cyanogen mod's rom will remove htcsense.com

Because I like the hardware in the HD and got it as an upgrade to my hero. I have been using LP on my hero for months now and Sense UI seems a bit "cartoony" going back to it.

I prefer some of the LP widgets over the Sense ones anyway (twitter for one).

Thanks,

Y.

Well I bought it primarily because it's the first 4.3" Android device (available for my market). I suspect many others will buy it for that exact same reason.

Sense is OK, but the first thing I did was replace it with Launcher Pro.

Me too but on reboot it goes back to Sense. Bah! Did you find a way around this? I will get to rooting it in a few days so hopefully there is a way with out having to have root access.

Same here... couldn't handle the tiny number of rows on the Sense launcher so now running ADW.Launcher.

Don't seem to have any Sense widgets available on ADW but don't care.

There's other stuff in 'Sense' other than the home/launcher though:

Some dialogs are different than standard Android ones, e.g. the time selector is a spinny fruit-machine-wheel type thing

Their own 'People' app which does Google contact sync, along with (another) backup to sense.com.

It seems to add account linking information into Google - if you look in contacts there's some <HTCData><Facebook>id: XML been added - hopefully that will keep account sync across resets which has to be redone each time on standard Android.

Something has added calendars for Facebook birthdays and events I've said 'attending'. I don't use the Sense calendar but maybe it's doing it in the background.

Probably some other things in Sense too?

EDIT: text selection draggable markers, text entry field zoom, browser window switcher

@yfaykya RE your launcher not being remembered, download an app called 'Home Switcher' and select your launcher, see if it helps. Personally I use Quickdesk, I assigned it as default home on install and it's never been kicked out so I haven't seen the Sense Launcher since then.

because it felt like a cheap plastic toy, not a £400+ flagship phone, plus I like HTC hardware

but I replaced Sense with ADW within a couple of hours

I can understand the guys wanting a sense free rom. Sure they implemented few nice new things for sense, buuuuuuut:

It is to less configurable for me. Resizable widgets, scrollable widgets, scrollable 15-shortcut dock at the bottom, completely skinnable - that's what LauncherPro is delivering me. The widget I bought additionaly was Weather & Toggle because of the sense-skinnable clock with weather animation. That's a really eyecandy thing I don't wanna miss

And for all the impatient people here:

Everyone here who says they don't like 'Sense' doesn't like the Sense LAUNCHER.

That's OK, you can run LauncherPro or ADW.Launcher or anything else as default home.

What about the rest of Sense, other than the launcher?

too bad the nexus s (aka nexus 2) is made by samsung  and its a "cheap" plastic toy as you put it.

htc hardware isn't ground breaking..but i do agree they have a slightly better hardware as they have "more" experience with smart phones

OK, that makes more sense, so does that imply that you could 'remove' Sense and use either of the above, but then put Sense back if you wanted to, ALL with no complications?

Cheers

I'm saying there's no need to remove Sense if it's only the launcher you don't like, just set one of the others as default.

If you don't like the other Sense stuff either (see my post above) then you can 'remove sense' by flashing a ROM that doesn't have it. If you want it back again then you'll have to re-flash with a ROM that does have it.

As far as I've seen there's such a difference between Sense and non-Sense ROMs that you always have to do a wipe when you switch between them, whereas if you're just upgrading to a similar ROM with some tweaks you can often get away without having to do that.

(I see wiping as a 'complication' :-)

I have exactly the same story. I like HTC's phones, design, etc, but changed to Launcher Pro because Sense became sluggish on my Hero, having 150+ apps installed. Now, switching to DHD, I kept LauncherPro as I really like it.

I have no urge to buy another brand. Love my DHD.

So are you talking about just using Launcher Pro in replacement of the default Sense launcher or have you flashed a ROM which omits Sense entirely?
