On the HTC Hero I can link a google contact to a facebook contact to get a person's profile picture to show up. This way I have all my contacts on my google account but for each one I can say wich facebook profile it is linked to
Can I do this on the Galaxy S?

Yes, just sync facebook contacts, and you can link the ones that may not match.
