Ok, so after a few hours in a late night session with cburnett late last night, I promised I would create a new thread about the white Dell Streaks. First off, thank you cburnett for sticking with me a few hours last night and getting me straightened out!! Your time was an huge example of way over the top, helping a stranger and you should have a donation in your box when you get up today! Also, an honorable mention to meralias for hanging out and helping as well! Both of these guys are spot on!

That being said, the short version is that apparently the White Dell Streak, USA version, from Best Buy, cannot be upgraded the conventional way, going from 6601 to 4399 and so on up to 2.2. Believe me, I tried everything I could on all the forums, with help and advise from numerous forum members, wasting hours upon hours, and only ended up soft bricking at the Dell Logo. Apparently, absolutely none of the recovery images can be used on this phone to flash any roms. Or at least that was my experience. This is confirmed by a couple others as well and cburnett also who has 3 Dell Streaks, and has upgraded them all the conventional way, except the White one, which he too, had to find a work around for. I believe that DJ Steve is aware of this as well on some level as it is my understanding that he is the one that gave cburnett the tool he needed to fix the issue.

I know the next question is going to be: What is the tool and where can I get it? I don't know much other than the tool is called "QDLTool upgrade build M 2.7.4.8" I don't know where to get the tool, as I had to give cburnett remote access to my comp and let him install it which I can tell you, was a very tricky task in itself just to get the correct drivers installed to get it running, but I can tell you that after it was finally running, it not only unbricked me, but jumped me straight to 2.2! At 2:30 am, and at my wits end with a soft-bricked Streak, it was nothing short of magic. B) Hope this helps anyone with a White Streak and saves you the hours and hours of hair pulling that I went through. Thanks again cburnett and meralias!!!

yes qdltool is a emgency flash/diag tool that works at lower level than fastboot/recovery so usually tends to work (ive fixed more 'bricked' streaks in the last few days from botched official 2.2 upgrades using it than i can count now. i dont give out the tool as its not the easist thing to use nor is it totally safe and in my opinion shouldn be used by anyone who doesn know fully what their doing. hence why i tend to install it via remote control.

but yes its a brilliant tool for fixing bricks

According to a few sources the white streaks have more memory. But I've found no evidence to support it, i was told they have a bigger internal sdcard
Since most non-tech people have trouble keeping the terms memory and storage straight (seriously, how hard is it!!), details like this often get mistranslated.

I KNEW I WASN'T LOSING MY MIND!! I have spent more time on this than I figured possible! I actually spent as much as 36 hours working on it over my offdays from work and still had no joy. I seriously thought I'd somehow lost my ability to follow directions. I think I need a vacation...anyone got a smoke...woosah...woosah... B)

Yup the only way i was able to get froyo on my white streak was through this method.

Yeah, when I went into the irc chat last night they knew exactly what to do right away based on the fact that mine was white. Said several others with white streaks had been in there recently with the exact same issues. Had me up and running on froyo in a couple hours, (from a soft brick no less) most of which was just figuring out how to install the right drivers for the tool they used. The issue as I experienced it is that not a single recovery rom will work on this phone to flash any of the update packages until you get to 2.2, in which case I was then able to use the proper recovery image to flash Dj Steve's 1.4.5 which is pretty bitchin by the way. I picked up a white Dell Streak today because they didn't have any black left in stock (thanks Black Friday). It can't be upgraded via the conventional method. Extremely frustrating since I bought this phone for work and can't really do anything with it until somebody either does it for me or releases a guide on how they did it.

It is my understanding that they are working on a guide to do this right now. Use this link to log into chat. The guys in there really know what they are doing and were able to help me. http://webchat.freenode.net/

They have most of the QDLTool Guide up now at StreakDroid.com

The Guide: http://streakdroid.com/?page_id=92

The QDLTool: http://streakdroid.com/repairtool.zip

The image included in the repair tool includes the pre-release official 2.2 with baseband, so then all you need to do is flash Clockworkmod, Clear Data/Cache, and Install DJ_Steve 1.4.6

DJ_Steve's Froyo now works flawlessly on my BestBuy White Streak.

I saw DJ_Steve's tweet that 1.5.0 is coming out tomorrow!

Ok... started along this process (because nothing has been working for me, per my last post: My Post). Got the Qualcomm drivers installed - piece of cake. I think whats tripping me up is the adb drivers for some reason.

End of the log where I error out:

Wait for ADB device .........
ERROR[D2]: wait ADB fastboot mode timeout!
Please check that device is exist and driver is properly installed.
Download Fail! - 2010/12/01 20:27:10
Elapsed Time: 42.58 sec[/codebox]

I don't really understand why. When I get the error above, my streak is showing in FASTBOOT_MODE. Am I missing an ADB driver? I have the "Android Bootloader Interface" under android devices in device manager installed (FWIW, i tried a couple of the other 'Android Bootloader XXX' i saw mentioned in other posts, still no go). Any ideas what I'm missing here? I really want some 'swappable goodness', but my streak seems to be thinking otherwise.. Am I really this stupid and missing something thats right in front of me? I don't want to just randomly start flashing, and through my hours of trying to get 2.2 many other times, I have still successfully managed not to get stuck (on anything other than 6601!). Again, any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Yes. There is another driver, the Qualcomm HS-USB Diagnostics 9002 is installed in a mode that is NOT fastboot. You pull the battery, replace, hold Vol up and plug in USB cable. The phone appears to be off, but Windows will begin the hardware detection.

Did you follow this video: http://streakdroid.com/?page_id=78

That said, it was really the helpful folks on the irc channel that walked me through before the guide was official.

Yup, that guide was awesome. I installed the "Qualcomm HS-USB Diagnostics 9002" piece of cake thanks to that. After following the guide word for word it starts running, then makes the phone reboot, thats when it 'looks for adb device' after about 20 seconds in. Thats when I see fastboot pop up and then it times out per that error message above. I assume I have the right adb driver installed because fastbook connects just fine, but in the tool, it hangs up on the adb portion, thus I think its an adb driver issue. The driver needed for the tool is installed correctly and it behaves like the vid shows it should... except for that error :P

I can confirmed that the White Dell Streak is a pain in the ****. i experience the same soft brick while trying to upgrade to 2.2. Thank you for the information and I can now fix it.

I love the Streak but I think I will exchange for a black one, the white is cool and nice IF it is all white (front and back) instead of 2 tones, black (front) and white (back).

Stephen, this is really great tool to have. And I also want to thank you for your wonderful Froyo 2.2 Rom (1.4.6). It was because of your Custom ROM (one and only) and Jenn's blog @ Streak Smart that convince me to get the Dell Streak. I will donate to you guys once I am back working (out of job 4 months already).

I am also wondering if by any chance you can share the files for "AT&T Locked US Stock 1.6 image/files" that we can use this wonderful qdltool to flash back to US AT&T Locked stock 1.6 for the time when we need to bring it in for warranty repair, etc. It is so much quicker then going from 2.2 to O2 2.1 to O2 1.6 then ATT 1.6

Thanks in advance.

That's a good idea to the able to use this tool to flash other roms. Particularly stock. Although I don't think it will matter since 2.2 is going to be considered stock from here on and thats what it flashes now.

Hello guys, I have been lurking in this forums for a while now. Finally decided that it was time to ask some question. I have done some research on the Dell streak. I have a upgrade since July on my AT&T line an I wanted to pick up a streak from my local Bestbuy. I have fell in love with the white version of it but after reading this thread and similar ones in the ndroid community I having second thoughts about it. Would I be able to root it on my own so I could use Steve 2.2 rom? I am comfortable with rooting and such. I did my wife's Evo not too long ago and it runs incredibly smooth on cyanogen rom. I wan to pick it up today but will wait for a responds before I pull th trigger.

I am in the same boat, tried to upgrade my dell streak att best buy white with 1.6 and now it is stalling at the dell screen flashing two buttons. Just to recap none of the roms out there will work on this model and I have to go down repair tool rout?

thanks,

Gabe
