I bought the SF with the initial £10 top up on it but had to spend a further £10 on it 4 days later because it had ran out. This didn't seem right to me as I had only made a few calls and no where near 300 text (300 free text included in package) When I checked my account online I found this:

25/11/10 20:02 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 418.0 0.21

25/11/10 19:02 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 35.0 0.15

25/11/10 18:38 GPRS sc-sevenemail1 1.0 0.00

25/11/10 18:09 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 18.0 0.07

25/11/10 18:08 GPRS sc-sevenemail1 1.0 0.00

25/11/10 18:05 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 3.0 0.02

Now I know for a fact that between 1800 and 2000 I was driving in the car and not using the phone at all! So where is my money going?

Is there anyway to see which apps are constantly connecting to the internet??

I was worried about this too, so I enable the internet when I want it - being careful to disable after use.

Not sure how you can work out whats eating the data.

Almost every android app will eat some data from time to time.

Disable data service when your not using it and install an app such as 3g watchdog to keep track of what data your using.

sc-sevenemail1 1.0 0.00 is the "Orange Email" process for push emails. Its based on the SEVEN email client.

If you dont want to turn off the APN, turn off the psh email facility in Orange Mail or SEVEN or what ever email you have installed.

Strangely when I spoke with T-Mobile, their Android contracts come with 3GB/month of usage ... yet the iPhone contracts are 500MB/month. I argued the iPhone one should be higher, but T-Mobile also said in their experience that the Android handsets tend to do far more data transfer ... such as FriendFeed etc.

  • 3 years later...

This same thing has just happened to my son's Samsung i9000.

THe Orange/Seven email app went bonkers and used up £10 in 48 hours - even though he doesn't have an Orange Email account. Plus I suspect random munching of the data allowance over the past year or so.

I tried complaining to Orange but have had no refund as yet. So it's being escalated.

This is a plain abuse akin to makin unsolicited calls - they need to fix their app.

As the email app is part of the ROM it cannot be uninstalled.

In the meantime have taken a muti=pronged attack - modified the APN, rooted and installed Droidwall (which has confirmed that it's the app doing it..)

I think most users won't have the time or knowledge to get out of this trap - so they will be ripped off by Orange and its buggy software.
