Guest Shaizer Posted December 4, 2010 Report Share Posted December 4, 2010 Hi all, I'm planning on buying this and I wanted to ask how well the limited 256mb RAM of the archos is coping, I know that android froyo is pretty smart at killing inactive apps and all but it's quite worrying as I see that on my HTC desire, most of the time, 70% of the 512mb (>256mb) RAM is in use. Are there any noticable lag in web browser/flash playback (most important to me) as well as games like angry birds? With the latest firmware 2.0.71 Archos improved the memory management and by using another launcher than the stock one (like Launcher Pro or Zeam Launcher) you'll improve performance even more. Firefox mobile 4b2 for example is a no go without rooting the device and enabling swap space. With other apps, especially browsers and complex web sites you'll encounter lags... simply because memory is low and has to be released by the os, before the current app will proceed. Games like Angry Birds do run smooth on the stock archos. Another issue might be the small internal memory space for apps and data: Only 300 MiByte without rooting, which is used up very quickly with memory hogs like Talking Tom, Google Earth and the like. Again: Only SDE + Custom Kernel and ROM can help this. Alas, if you do so, you'll get hell of a device. Very responsive, few to no lags, plenty of space to install apps in and even overclocking is possible.
