Hi Guys,

Well, it's coming to that time again. Almost at the end of my 18 month contract and come January I'll be able to upgrade my phone from my trusty old HTC Hero.

Now as whatever phone I get will be on a 2 year contract, I will want to make it a good one.

So idealy one using Tegra2 chipset.

So would you guys consider it worth getting the LG Optimus X2 ( Due out in Europe in feb I believe)

Or should I wait longer (Hard to do with my willpower) nd get a HTC Dual Core phone ?

Basically I guess, what are LG phones like for upgrades etc and what's the developer scene like for them ?

hi there, i am in a similar situation to you, in fact about a month ago i cut my hero contract short by 3 months and upgraded to the Desire HD (which i am loving for the most part) however am aware of the occasional lag and poor battery life (although not too bad since i bought a 1600mA battery replacement) and will consider selling my desire HD in january for a dual core (hopefully Tegra 2) phone. However i dont think i can accpept any phone other than an HTC device, because of the polish that Sense brings. SO do we just take any dual core phone that we like in January, or do we wait?

Well the answer is my friend, wait for HTC. I am sure although the Hero is slow and a bit crap for now days phones, you will appreciate the more pleasurable experience that Sense gives android, and although HTC may stick with Snapdragon, they will still be able to crack out some great dual cores in the first half of 2011 i am sure. TBH Htc is a must and i strongly reccomend waiting the few extra weeks/months for a phone you will be keeping for the next 2 years. I sure will be.

Hope this helps

Personally, I wouldn't touch an LG phone. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I am a pretty biased HTC fan ;)

Having said that, I don't really think any apps are going to take advantage of the more powerful handsets for some time. The problem is that if developers create an app that needs the latest hardware, they limit the market to those fortunate enough to own it. For that reason, most apps are 'scaled down' to make them accessible to a wider customer base.

I struggled with this same question when buying a tablet. I really wanted a Tegra 250 but ended up getting the Galaxy Tab for a few reasons - not least of which is the wide range of accessories available.

My advice - buy a HTC :)

Well, Ive been quite a fan of HTC too for last few years. But I got stuck with a Hero only a few months before the next generation of snapdragon phones came out,

And once I get my next phone, I'll be stuck with it for 2 years. So that makes me inclined to get a Tegra2 handset. Although overkill for now, who knows in 1 year what we will need to run latest games/apps ?

I guess I need to wait until CES in Jan to see what the different companies announce. If HTC will get a dualcore out quickly then I'll stick with them, as there is a great ROM scene for their phones.

Not bothered about Sense though. I've been running vanilla Android for most of the last year or so.

decisions, decisions....

Don't forget that Qualcomm has already announced the dual-core Snapdragon running at 1.2GHz and Samsung's Orion dual-core chipset.

+1 to the LG sentiment that bcmobile shared.

Hmm, so LG not so popular. But maybe this is the star of their big Android power phone push ?

I'l wait until CES and see what is announced. I'm due upgrade in Jan so am happy to wait until feb, but if HTC delay any longer than that I dont know if I can hold out any longer :)

I'd want 1080p recording and hdmi output at least.....

I am in the same situation as you, got a Hero on a contract that runs out in April and I want a phone I'm gonna keep for at least 2 years... and I only have eyes for the Motorola Atrix.

The Atrix is the first new bit of technology that has got me excited for many years, and the only phone that has really piqued my interest since I bought my HTC Hero. The Nexus was nice, and was quite an upgrade, but it did what my phone did but slightly faster. I was waiting for something more... revolutionary.

The Nexus S was one of the biggest disappointments in tech history, but then out of nowhere this shows up from Motorola and totally blows me away. I mean seriously, this will actually change my life (no exaggeration).

I carry my phone, my 1G iPod Touch and my digital camera everywhere with me. I use the iPod to listen to music on the go, and when I get home I plug it into the dock next to my TV (The dock is hooked up to my sound system) and listen to music and watch videos on my TV. I take pictures and video with my digital camera (cause the camera on the Hero sucks) and I do work in the office, transfer stuff to my phone bring it home and transfer it to my PC to keep working on it.

That all changes. I take one device, with my laptop dock, and that's it. I can work on it, listen to music, watch videos, play games, use it as a sat nav, take photos, shoot 720p videos and it is all in one device. I can hook it up to my sound system at home, I can take it to my parents and show them photos and videos on the laptop dock, I can do work on the train and show it straight away to my boss as soon as I walk through the door... I don't have to transfer a single file anywhere.

The other thing is this has the hardware to last a few years. Tegra 2 (Dual 1GHz Cortex A9), Hi-Res qHD Screen (960x540), 1GB RAM, 16GB ROM, SD card slot 5MP camera with dual LED flash, VGA front facing camera, nice big battery (1,930mAh)... the only thing I would have wished for is a better camera. I don't even care that it is on Android 2.2, this phone does everything I need as it is, I couldn't care less if it never got 2.3 or anything higher. The only thing missing from Android for me is Hardware acceleration.

The only problem I have is where am I gonna find the money to buy all the accessories?! I want the laptop dock for work and home, the multimedia dock for the front room, the normal dock for the bedroom, the car dock for sat nav... I need a new mortgage!

atrix looks like moto XT882 however XT882 has got much more than atrix has to offer like processor of XT882 is much advanced ;) as it has got dual core nvidia tegra 2 while that of motorola atrix is cortex A9 (as mentioned above in the comment) and display screen size resolution is pretty the same (even os version differs however new motoblur interface could be found on both) so cheers after all dual core androids are ready to compete in the mobile market.
