If it's not Gen1 then STOP HERE! - INSTALLING A GEN1 ROM ON A GEN2 DEVICE WILL BRICK IT

This guide replaces the Old Guide that only showed you how to install clockwork using Fastboot.

This new Guide does not require you to have any drivers on your PC.

There are two ways to install a ROM

  • Using
    Clockwork

  • Using the
    Total Phone Transfer System
    (TPT)

    Clockwork
    is a replacement for the
    Recovery tool
that ships with the ZTE Blade.

If you Boot up the device while holding down the
    VOLUME DOWN
button, the phone boots into the recovery system.

The ZTE one has no use to us - so we replace it with one that is very useful.

The recovery partition also contains a Linux Kernel - this is loaded before clockwork.

The Total Phone Transfer System, does not require you to have Clockwork installed - it does however make much more fundimental changes to your device.

    TPT is really for more
    experienced users
    - you can only install using the TPT method if the ROM has been specially packed for it.

So there are 5 mini Guides here
    1. How to Install Clockwork using Recovery Manager

    2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

    3. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork Manually

    4. How to Install a Total Phone Transfer

    5. How to Install Clockwork using Fastboot (old way)

    First
    - go and pick a ROM from the
    current selection

Older ROM's can be installed with
    Clockwork 2.5.1.8
    - you can install this if you want - but
    Clockwork 3.0.2.8
    is more current.

(this guide currently shows you how to install 3.0.2.8 - however to install 2.5.1.8 - just swap to the newer file - the
    instructions are the same
    )

This Guide will select a ROM to show you the commands, but you can choose your own and substitute the name of your file.

    New users
    should follow the
    1. How to Install Clockwork

    then follow
    2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

If you have just arrived here / or you want to understand some of these terms.

Then you may want to cross reference with the Android Glossary

    Unlocking for ANY SIM

You do not need to unlock your device to use any SIM, the SIM lock is separate to the ROM.

You can generate an unlock code so the phone can be used with ANY SIM (see Free Version)

The APN settings will need to be updated for your provider.

This Guide will NOT work on ZTE Joe (Vodaphone 845) or the ZTE V9 or the ZTE Racer - You may BRICK your device if you try using the files mentioned in this post.

    1. How to Install Clockwork using Recovery Manager

Good News - there are 3 ways to get
    Clockwork
    onto your
    Recovery Partition
    .

This is going to show you the easiest - however if you want to see the other ways - go and look in the Second Post (Scroll down a lot)

Once you have installed Clockwork - you do not need to do it again to change to another ROM.

The easiest way to get Clockwork onto your Recovery system is to use
    ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
    .

    However you cannot run the
    ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
    unless you have
    root
    (Superuser).

    First we install
    UniversalAndroot v1.6.1
    . (
    http://www.multiupload.com/GMMLSXFUIK
    )

This is an application - you copy the APK to your phone over USB (or just download in on your phone) then open the file from an APP that lets you browse your SDcard.

There is a Filer app already on your phone, or you can download other ones from the Market (Astro / Es File Explorer)

Files downloaded on the phone go to
    /SDCard/Downloads

    So here are the Steps

    Warning
: Androot may be detected by a Virus Checker as -
    Trojan:Unix/Rootkit

This is a false positive - Androot is designed to break the security of Android - that's why it gets detected.

Download to your Phones SD Card

    • UniversalAndroot v1.6.1
      (
      http://www.multiupload.com/GMMLSXFUIK
      )

    • ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager 0.36b
(check you get the right one -
      0.36b
      )

    • Clockwork 3.0.2.8 (recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img)
      - not the ZIP file
      direct link

      Check files are Good
      • Install
        ASTRO File Manager
        from the Market

      • Open
        Astro File Manager
        from the
        App Drawer
        - browse to the
        recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
        file

      • Hold your finger on the file and choose
        Details
        - check the the
        MD5 Sum

        - if not re-download the file.

          Universalandroot
          from the APK you downloaded

          Universalandroot
          from the
          App Drawer

        • Choose
          Go Root

        • Unzip
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the ZIP you downloaded

          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the APK

        • Launch
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the
          App Drawer

        • Allow the
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager App
          to have
          Superuser Rights

        • Hit the
          Recovery
          tab.

        • Hit the
          MENU
button on your device and choose
          Update Database

        • Choose
          Install Recovery

        • If you have more than one IMG file on the sdcard you will be presented with a list - choose
          recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img

          Problems

          • If Recovery Manager keep force closing - try:

            re-rooting the phone (Universal Root)

removing the Cache of Recovery Manager (in Settings > Applications)

Use a task killer to kill both Superuser and Recovery Manager

That's it you have Clockwork installed: Now lets get a ROM on

            2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

            We are going to use
            ZTE-Blade Recovery Manage
to tell Clockwork what to do.

However in the future you can now
            enter Clockwork
            by:

            • In the

                Rom Zip file you choose
                (r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip)

              • Hold your finger on the file and choose
                Details
                - check the the
                MD5 Sum

              • Launch
                ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager

                App Drawer

                Backup Current Firmware
                - this will put a FULL backup of your device onto the SDCard (in a directory called clockwork)

              • Choose

                The phone will reboot into
                Clockwork
                and
                automatically
                perform the following tasks:
                • install the ROM

                • wipe data and cache partitions

                • reboot into the new ROM

                  Help it won't boot

let it try for about 6 minutes before you give up.

If you tried to use the Install Firmware Update and the phone won't boot, then you need to Wipe manually (Factory Reset).

This you will do in clockwork

                  • Remove the battery

                  • Put the battery back in

                  • From the clockwork menu choose: wipe data/factory reset.

                  • From the main menu choose: Reboot

                  • If this doesn't work then it could be that the ROM you downloaded got damaged.

You need to download the ROM again and copy the File to the SDCard and install again.

This you will do in clockwork

                              4. How to install a Total Phone Transfer

This technique uses a much lower level method of updating your ROM.

                              However it is
                              NEW
, and in development - and only a few ROMs are currently available (but they are newer ones).

Using TPT allows you to change all of the sections of your phone in
                              one single install
. This means that the BOOT, RECOVERY and ROM all get installed together.

TPT also has the power to change other much deeper parts of the device; the first discovery has been that you can change the
                              partition sizes
                              .

This means the the Spare space (MB) in the
                              system partition
location - can be squeezed down so that you have more space to install Apps in the
                              data partition
                              .

The ROM developer will pick the correct size partition for their ROM.

Here is a video of TPT in action

                                  5. How to Install Clockwork using Fastboot

On some newer phone you cannot get into fastboot.

To try this turn the phone back on with '
                                  volume up
                                  ' held.

If all you see is a big grey block with the letters ZTM in the middle, then you will have to use another method to get clockwork onto your device.

On Windows you will need to install the ZTE Blade Drivers.

If you do not install the drivers you will see "
                                  waiting for device
                                  " when using the fastboot-windows

Some users report these drivers work when the first do not work :
                                  http://flibblesan.co.uk/android/zte_driver.zip

The only tool you need is a md5sum checker.

MD5sum is a way of checking that the file you have downloaded has not been corrupted in any way, when you run the MD5sum command against a files the response is the files "fingerprint", if this differs from the expected MD5, then you need to re-download the file

                                  Windows

                                  Get your md5sum utility from:

Thanks for the New guide. It is much more simple and easy to follow with most recent additions.

One suggestion though. Please include the link for USB drivers for ZTE blade. This will help new users picking up the best drivers. After all they need this driver to transfer files from their pc and/or installing recovery through fastboot.

with tpt methode

rename recovery-clockwork-blade-2.5.1.8.img to recovery.img and copy this file in /scdcard/image

if something goes wrong you can always boot the phone with clockwork

no need to press menu or home buttons ;)

just power + volume up begin the process (tested many times)

When I do the following:

# Hit the Recovery tab - Choose Install Recovery

# Browse to the recovery-clockwork-blade-2.5.1.8.img and select it

After I select Choose 'Install Recovery', I don't get the option to browse to it, it just seems to automatically pick it up from the sd card.

At this point it then tries to install the recovery and seems to hang at the next dialog, I then have to cancel it and the recovery is not installed.

I think the r7 does not do a Wipe during install - I will alter the guide to account for this.

After I select Choose 'Install Recovery', I don't get the option to browse to it, it just seems to automatically pick it up from the sd card.

At this point it then tries to install the recovery and seems to hang at the next dialog, I then have to cancel it and the recovery is not installed.

Did you install ROOT?

Also can you re-download and md5 checksum the img file.

I did install UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk, when I ran ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager, it asked me for superuser access which I granted.

I did check the img md5 checksum using astrofile manager and it was correct.

How long typically does the img take to install?

Just redownloaded everything, verified checksums all correct. Same thing stuck at Recovery Install Dialog ;)

One suggestion though. Please include the link for USB drivers for ZTE blade. This will help new users picking up the best drivers. After all they need this driver to transfer files from their pc and/or installing recovery through fastboot.

True, the PC driver issues is one of the big stumbling blocks people encounter, Steve seems to be aiming this guide as one you could do wholly on the phone itself.

The problem might be actually be finding this page on the web, so I've been using the Google Chrome to Phone extension Chrome to Phone extension, you can send this page via that and it will (eventually) appear on your phone allowing you to continue reading it and downloading all the files you need for this, direct to the SD card.

I will add the drivers later tonight - and give it all a bit of polish

what's happened to the previous how to about this?

Why is ZTE app manager neccessary now ?

Isn't just install clockwork, wipe data+factory reset, pick your rom from the sd card and flash.

Why has it suddently become more complex. Is there still a link to the old tutorial ?

I KNOW i'm asking a lot, but as a non-native english speaker and a mediocre writer i think i'm going to say something that other may think.

Do you think will ever be possible to have your youtube video subtitled? i mean i'm good at reading and understanding, but not really at "listen and repeat".

Now since the Blade seems to be mainly a european and asiatic phenomenon (since no US version is avaliable at the moment) a lot of your audience may not understand the video.

Well it's just a tip, your work is amazing, me, at first place, owe you a lot since if i could do something to my blade is thanks to your guides ;)

Hi, Just flashed 2.2 onto my blade. All seems to be fine apart from no Android Market App. Any idea why this is, and how to install?

Which Rom did you do please?

some time before i too searched for those Drivers...so many reseach came up with this trully ones...even detected SFran when in clockwormod...

ZTE Blade Drivers.

About new mod r7 (www.MoDaCo.com) , i can only regret about Display resolution that somehow has worsenned.

I thought it was poor camera resolution , but now i see old pictures are balso not so pretty as before.

My display is a tft...maybe because the mod is preferable for Led display it wont look so good at Tft´s...
