Home Button, 3G and incoming calls stopped working

my daughters Galaxy S has started acting very strange. The symptoms are as follows...

1. Incoming calls go to voicemail
All diverts are correct and normal, so it isn't divert.
When the phone is switched off, voicemail is immediate. When the phone is switched on, an incoming call rings once or twice then goes to voicemail. My conclusion is that the phone is rejecting the call for some reason
2. the home button no longer works
The home button does nothing. whether in an app, in applications list or at the home screen, the home button does nothing.
Again, it is as if the phone 'thinks' something else is running, and the home button is replaced with some other null function
3. there is no 3G.
Data can not be enabled. The phone has been rebooted several times, SIM card removed and replaced, flight mode on, off, etc. Nothing enables the 3G. when attempt to use web browser or other similar app, the phone just reports that the internet or data connection is not available.

3 symptoms that all imply that the phone is confused.
The problem started when the battery was removed without shutting down.

Could a reset fix it?
If so, what sort of reset?
If we do a reset to try and fix this, what is the best way to back everything up like photos, music, desktop, etc. etc.???

Has anyone else seen this or any one of the symptoms?

You need to do a wipe data/factory reset using the 3 button combo, to get into Recovery Mode: Power phone off, then press and hold the following buttons: Volume Up + Home key + Power key. When phone gets to the Galaxy S I9000 boot screen release just the power key.

Keep the Volume Up and Home keys pressed, you will see a screen with coloured text, keep them pressed until this screen has finished loading.
At the top in blue you will see DATA WIPE/FACTORY RESET, use the vol up/down to navigate it, home key to OK the action.
On the next screen you will see a lot of NO's, in the middle will be 1 YES, use vol up/down to navigate to YES, home key to Ok the action.

This will reset the phone and will most likely wipe your data, contacts, accounts, ect. Doing this type of reset will sort out all sorts of problems with the SGS, but be aware that there are some SGS's that cant get into Recovery Mode because it has been disabled, if you find that yours is one of them, head over to the XDA forum and search for the 3 button combo fix.
It is very important to have this working, because if you flash new firmware and something went wrong you would be able to recover the phone from with in recovery mode. There are 2 parts to it: Recovery mode & Download mode.

You can back up you contacts to your Google account, if you have set one up that is.
Kies will back up your contacts 2 and some other things like memo's music, photo's, not sure about SMS/MMS, but there is an app in the market that will back up SMS to your google account
