What we say

This is a neat app that gives you a REAL US number that friends can text and also allows you to send real SMS (worldwide) for free! :P Excellent if you are outside the US and want people in the US to be able to contact you without paying an arm and a leg and just great if want to be able to text anyone for free. OK, so it needs an injection of shiny, but the concept is great!

Note: You may need 'Market Access' to install this outside the US!

Market star rating at time of writing

Similar / Alternative apps

Also check out Heywire, which is very similar (and also quite ugly).

Suggested improvements for the next version

I would like to see a lot more polish, and an ad-free single purchase option in the Market.

Paul,

You may like to check the link to Market Access in the line: Note: You may need 'Market Access' to install this outside the US! The URL referenced is simply 'm'

Anyone managed to get this to work?

Have successfully set up US number but every time I try to send a txt to me here in the UK it just seems to go into a black hole.

All references I find suggest the obvious +44 prefix but that still gets black-holed as does 01144, 0044 and 044. Using the web site to test doesn't allow the use of '+' but is mentioned in the faq's.

Also tried sending a couple to continental US but no replies so can't confirm if even that bit is working.

Tested and works fine.. Sent text message and got a reply back also.. Brilliant app..

The code for setting back Market  to O2 UK is 23410 . Had to restart the phone to show up things in £.

Thanks, didn't have any probs setting Market back but still can't send to UK even using the website. I have received txt's back from the US with a couple lagging about 6 hours after they were sent and after further replies!

Seems quite flakey at mo.

I set this up yesterday but haven't got a chance to test it out properly yet. However, is there a way to stop normal texts showing up in the Textfree app as well? I turned off notifications which at least stops me getting two alerts every time, but this won't be practical if I start using the app to text the US.

I got the textfree with voice app on my ipod touch and every time that i try to load my earlier messages in the conversation, it like freezes and then just exits out of the app... is there a way to fix that without having to download the app again?
