Broke my Vega...

Hi guys

Sorry to say it but I accidentally caught the edge of my Vega with my foot this morning causing a huge crack across the screen:

IMG_20110315_075141.jpg

As a day one purchaser (yes I was one of the very very lucky ones) I felt like I should apologise for what I did next. The iPad was way out of my price range at the time of ordering my Vega, over £180 more. Plus I got cash back on my Vega and a £10 off voucher making the iPad £200 more. Now the iPad is £329 and with cash back is even better value. I rarely replace gadgets like for like and the Vega does have some quirks which annoy me. The portrait view is appalling, the responsiveness of the the touch screen can be at times excellent, flawless... and others quite simply annoying! Ill hate having to use iTunes, not being able to use the exact same (paid for in some cases) apps as my phone (HTC Desire), but I'm sure I'll survive. I didn't want to wait for the iPad 2. The best thing about it is that it has reduced the price of the iPad 1! Not fussed by the extra processing power or the cameras. I just want a reliable tablet, to browse the net, use twitter, watch films, read books (maybe) and play the odd 'pass the time' game.

The broken Vega and it's official case will be listed here in a few hours: http://www.amibay.com

So I am sorry guys. The iPad arrives in a day or two.

EDIT: For those interested I have listed both the broken Vega and the official case here: http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=14432

Good luck playing flash on your ipad.....oh wait! you can't.

Plus the lack of itunes on vega is easily fixed especially if you use winamp to its full potential, it can wifi sync with your vega and can import all of your itunes library.

Who'd have thought the first response would contain a dig about Flash?! lol :D I only use Flash on my Vega for iPlayer at the moment and haven't the BBC just released (or about to) an official iPlayer app?

I don't use iTunes at the moment but then I don't exactly have a massive music collection. Nor would I want to play music on my tablet. I just meant for syncing videos etc... I'm sure it wont drive me to suicide.

not sure about the iplayer app, however I heard talk about it on Radio 1 this morning and apparently its really limited and hardly plays anything as bbc are refusing to optimise most content away from flash.

Cheers Trevor, very nice of you to say. I'm not a fan boy of any particular brand (I have a Dell laptop (Windows 7), HTC/Android Phone, Sony PS3, Hitachi TV etc... I just try to buy the best product in my price range) so there is a good chance my next tablet wont be an Apple product. It could be the Vega 2! If that is the case I'll soon be back :(

That is a bit disappointing. Hopefully the beeb will find of way of catering for everyone who wants to use iPlayer.

Gotta say, I'd do the same if I was in the same boat.

As much as we'd like to slag off tony for his move to apple, we all would, it was just the price that was stopping the migration.

Who knows how many vega buyers were only drawn by the difference in price compared to the iPad.

And with that almost closed up, why not!

Anyway tony, the only problem is that you'll have to watch TGS more. Them fanboiz hyperventilate anything Apple.

How much you asking for it Tony?

I haven't decided. I'm thinking somewhere between £50 - £100 for the Vega and £15 for the case maybe?

You are probably correct. I'm not against any brand really (only the cheap nasty ones) and the only real thing that irks me about Apple is the price points they use. Most Macs are PCs with nice cases and different OS. But they charge a premium for the badge. I know the same can be said about some cars and other products but that also irks me! Apple do make some great products. And now the iPad is priced where I'm happy to pay for it.

I'm used to reading Apple fanboyisms. I regulary check Engadget. :D

I disagree. I certainly wouldn't buy an iPad. Price wasn't the factor that stopped me. Prime reason is the draconian restrictions such as no SD card and in particular their application marketing/development policy (even worse now re: IOS apps) but most of all the fact that you can't do anything without going via the PC. Hardly portable in my mind. Whilst I fully agree the iPad is a superb device in terms of build quality, reliability and indeed user experience, the day of the Droid cometh - and this year at that I suspect.

But hey, that's just my view! :D

Indeed, and as this is a public forum everyone is entitled to them. I'm not saying everyone should step on their Vegas an get an iPad as a replacement. But I agree with Touch Graphite that probably quite a few people would plump for an iPad over the Vega had the price been closer. But again just my view :( .

But it that because of the marketing, which in my opinion is what Apple really excel at? Certainly my boss was mulling over getting a tablet a few weeks back and while I was trying to convince him to wait and see what honeycomb had to offer, he kept saying he was probably going to get an ipad coz "it just works". Personally I think that is just marketing spiel, especially as he came in the day after buying his ipad complaining that it didn't do something or other the way he expected and he was having problems with something else...

Good luck with your new baby Tony!

I had a play with a relatives iPad recently and the first thing I did was give the iPlayer app a spin. Worked pretty well, flawless as far as I can tell. No idea if there is a difference in the amount of content available but I would guess that will even out eventually.

I only had 2 real gripes with iPad as a video watching machine, firstly the aspect ratio which apple are harping on as is better is really not. TV's from 20 years ago were suited to that ratio as that was the ratio that was broadcast but with practically 99.99% of available video content being widescreen you will need to get used to a smaller display with black borders. The second thing that really bothered me was the weight of the thing! Its REALLY heavy, I gave up watching an episode of top gear as my arms were starting to really ache!

I fall into the group of people that would not go from Vega to iPad, only big plus for me on iPad is screen and the screen on the Vega is plenty good enough for me. Too many compromises on iPad I would have to make. Also I could not live with the cost of the apps on iPad, when you get yours try looking for a decent PDF reader, made my mouth fall open how much they wanted for them.

Anyway, when you find yourself bored of your new toy sell it and you might have enough to join us once more :D

Hold on, I am not an apple fan at all. However, if you jailbreak the ipad you can get flash on it, multitasking and also dont have to use Itunes. Isnt that right ?

If this is the case, then its a very interesting purchase. I have also heard that you can run honeycomb on ipad 2. Know your enemy.

When I saw the refurbs for £289 I was on the verge of ordering, up until I read that VLC has been removed from the App Store (I am aware it is still on Cydia). I just couldn't face converting every video I wanted to watch on the move.

I had the money for an ipad and I chose not to get one, I wanted a vega, or certainly an android tablet. The Galaxy Tab did not appeal due to its screen size so the best option was the vega, and what a choice it has turned out to be, especially once we get honeycomb (and yeah it will happen).

You can, but the flash is buggy and and jailbreaking is generally a pain in the ass.

Honeycomb cannot possible be on the ipad2 yet, if it is then it will only be an sdk port and would be crazy buggy. Until AOSP is out you won't see a proper build of honeycomb on anything other than the xoom let alone an ipad!

Some perhaps, but certainly not all users. I don't dislike the ipad at all, it does what it does and does it well. I just think it's a limited device in the form of 'this is what you get' and I don't like the way you have to do certian things or the way you are limited... Money was not the issue.

But I hope the ipad will be what you hope for tony, and I am curious what you will miss about the vega and what big positive sides the ipad has.

Good question dagrim1. Ill miss:

* The widescreen form factor

* I like Android as an OS

* I do like to tinker with things so it probably wont be long before the iPad is jailbroken!

* Being able to side load apps

* Ability to download any file type

* HDMI out was nice to have but to be honest I've used it once and that was to create a YouTube video showing it off!

* Real multitasking.

As for what the iPad will bring (I'm hoping for...):

* A better web browsing experience. Too many web sites are broken on Android (a few forums I can post using it etc...)

* Someone mentioned earlier about stuff on iDevices "just working". Even though I like to tinker there are some things that should "just work"! Like Worms didn't work, I had to hack some files in so it would. Last night Angry Birds seasons was crashing after every go. Stuff like that! Grrrr!

* More quality apps - Controversial!! :D

* A better build quality. The Vega is nice but it feels cheaper than an iPad.

* More cases and accessories to choose from. More third party stuff. Bigger market should mean more of this.

There are probably other things that will become apparent that I like more on the Vega or iPad when it arrives. For now I hope someone buys my broken Vega to offset the cost of the iPad! Lol

No need to Jailbreak to get multitasking, its been present in the last two versions of IOS at least. There is a version of flash for Jailbroken Iphones and Ipads however I have to say having owned an Iphone for over 18 months its lack of flash support has never bothered me in the slightest,Iplayer works fine as does TVcatchup just the odd advert on some sites that don't display. Itunes is horrible but the only time I connect to it is to add/remove films or backup photos, I tend to download apps etc directly on the device. I bought the vega because I couldn`t justify the cost of the Ipad at the time and because it was clear from day one that there would be a good support community making for some interesting modifications. In my opinion if you like to tinker and customise your device, android is the way forward, if you're not interested in this then the Ipad is a good choice at its reduced price.

As an owner and user of both I can tell you the following:

* Browsing on the Vega with dolphin hd and lastpass is unbeatable.

* You'll love the ipad screen it's so much better.

* The app quality is mainly looks, but comes at a hell of a price to your wallet.

* Cases can be awesome the iMage gets my recommendation its awesome.

Good luck in iWorld mate!
