Hi there, I have just come from HTC Desire to the Galaxy S.

So far am loving the phone apart from one issue which I believe is sorted using an app called Voodoo Lagfix.  Will be looking into that more.

I have been playing with the phone rather alot and my only gripe is the lag.  Everything else I love.  

I'm on a T-mobile branded model which is 2.1 and before I do anything to the phone, I need to know, do I need to debrand first?  I am assuming that I would have to as I did with the Desire but that may not be the case so figure best to ask.

My other question which the answer is probably staring me in the face is, how does one check for firmware updates on this phone?  On the Desire it was in the About phone section but I can't find it there on the Galaxy.

I'm sure it's very simple but if somebody would be kind enough to let me know I would very much appreciate it.

Welcome to the Galaxy S, it's a great phone.

Firmware updates: if you want official updates you will need to download the companion software from Samsung called kies. Kies can be a pain in the back side at times and doesn't always play nice.
OTA(over the air updates) are not yet available on the SGS.

Most of us would prefer to use an application called odin for flashing new firmware. Take a look at www.samfirmwares.com there you will find firmwares and guides to flashing. You will have to register on the samfirmwares site before you can download anything.

Your phone is on quite old firmware now. The best one to download would be Froyo 2.2.1, it's super quick and has no lag. 2.3 firmware is also available but it's not very stable at the moment so I would recommend staying clear of it.

Were all waiting for Gingerbread 2.3 to be rolled out, which hopefully will be some time in April for unbranded phones and a few weeks or months later for branded phones.

If you decide to use odin to flash your new firmware it will debrand your phone and get rid of all the T-mobile bloatware on it, the downside is it will invalidate your warranty. You will still be able to use kies to get any future official updates.

Many thanks for the quick reply.  Yes, going from a custom rom back to 2.1 was a bit of a shock to the system. lol.  I will go look for odin now.  Not worried about the warranty, did it on my desire within a week of having it. lol.

No wonder I couldn't find anything for software updates on the phone, lol.

Thanks again, off to find odin, no doubt I will have more questions but will try not to keep asking.

Just been looking at this site here as I couldn't find my way around samfirmwares.com and according to their guide, my phone must not be simlocked to be able to use odin.

Interesting ... I am on 2.2.1   yet when I plug into KIES it tells me there is new firmware and I have started dowload ... it shows 0/75971 kb ....  after leaving it run it gets to 100% and still keeps going ... I gave up when file size was 1.8Gb
