Lets turn it around... what would be YOUR preference and why. Why would and wouldn't you pick one or the other. Please put in some effort.

I now have the 2x, why? It's available, it wasn't too expensive, smaller then sgs2 and it's fast and good.

Differences between sgs2 and 2x:

* Size

* Price

* Ram (double in sgs2)

* Screen (samoled+xxlv3 or something, at least... in some regions) even though the LG screen suits me just fine

* Samsung vs LG...

* Gingerbread on sgs2 as mentioned below (but should be out soon on 2x as well)

* 16GB (SGS2) internal storage vs 8GB (2x)

* Samsung dualcore (sometimes) vs tegra2

Owned a SGS before the 2x btw, and the screen on the 2x certainly doesn't feel as a step backwards.

Most important one is the size. What are the differences in dimensions? I bought the Optimus 2x because it was the smallest uber-high-spec phone available. 4+ inch is crazy since it hardly fits in my jeans pockets anymore.

the LG Optimus 2X actually has some tiny things that make it worth buying, but are so small they aren't worth advertising.

like LG on-screen phone, which let's you use your phone from a PC through usb or bluetooth.

the built-in screenshot app, that lets you take a screenshot without any hacking by pressing home and power.

a power control widget in the notification bar, so you can easily turn on wifi in the middle of a browsing session or bluetooth while within the music app.

an(optional) music widget in the notification bar, so you can control your music from within any app/game that doesn't run fullscreen.

feature-rich camera app, with fullHD support.

at least 10 touchpoints(nobody found yet with enough fingers to test for more touch points)

tap-gestures(tap side/top/bottom of phone) for music(next/previous) and keyboard(cursor control in all 4 directions)

optional phone-position based behaviour(upside down=no calls/pause video, next to ear=screen off, etc.)

speed-boosted gallery(no, it's not just the tegra2 doing that)

down(portrait)/side(landscape) facing stereo speakers for louder sound (speakers tend to be facing the rear, or up which usually is straight away from you)

virtual surround and more equalizer settings in the stock music app

curved screen edges that make sideways swiping more comfortable

key-proof screen

and something that might be part of later froyo builds, but is new for me(coming from an acer liquid with froyo):

an option to switch keyboard from within the keyboard settings screen(so no need to find a textbox and long-press it)

Optimus 2x vs Galaxy S II.

For now I would pick the Optimus 2X. The community has already been able to unlock the bootloader and root the device.

So even if LG sucks at delivering updates you'll soon have custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod and Paul's Custom ROMS available.

We have no idea if Samsung will let people mess with the Galaxy S II. For now everything they're saying is pure marketing talk.

Second. Samsung and carriers support of the Galaxy S was simply awful. A top of the line phone like the Galaxy S took more than 6 months to get Froyo, meanwhile less powerful Android phones from other companies took only one month to get it. What carriers and phone makers need to understand is that if I'm satisfied by their products and support I'm more likely to pick them again when I decide to buy another smarthphone.

With their actions they're loosing the high income customers that don't mind buying a new smarthphone once an year or at least once each two years and the contract is over.

If you want to be safe. For now go with the Optimus 2X.
