Now when Gen1 phones are being converted to Gen2 addressing will this mean that there will be newer kernels available for the Gen2 phones?

Today there is only one rom out for Gen 2 phones, and this rom is also available for Gen 1 phones. But I remember that there have been problems before with new kernels using the Gen 2 addressing and that we were forced to use the leeked .CN kernel to make it work.

Do the available kernels from zte be made with the gen 2 in mind so one is more or less forced to go Gen 2 to take advantage of kernel bugfixes. And does this in anyway help with the issue about the ril being closed and not distributed by ZTE?

The pre-built kernel that come with the recent 2.2 devices is built from a different source than the one ZTE currently have for download.

As to what has been added... thats anyone's guess.... ZTE have been asked a couple of times for an updated source, but no sign of any sort of responce....

Does that mean that the kernel in version 2 phones is newer? And that the development of the kernel for version two phones in the future will be able to optimize it as soon as the source is out? They are obligated to release the source so I guess they will sooner or later.

I wouldn't bank on it, they seem to think that the token gesture of releasing source ealier this year covers them forever. Strange that they love the fact that the open source community is getting them voted the best non-htc device of 2010 on XDA but can't be bothered releasing some source.

They should be making the source code available before or at the same time as the binary copies. Ideally they'd have an open development process too.

It's a shame it isn't an expensive phone that lawyers use, are there any trainee lawyers want to try to explain the GPL to them?

You can report them via email to http://gpl-violations.org/
