You need to use AmonRA with a PVT4 Desire, flash the RUU for your phone to go back to stock and then re-root using AmonRA 2.01

thx...im on a stock rom froyo 2.2,can i reroot over unrevoked?(proberly a stupid question) and where would i find a RUU?

Hi,

I have the exact same issue here - HTC Desire GSM PVT4, I used unrevoked3 3.32 to root and add the clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 recovery on it, and I can't backup and I assume I can't install a custom ROM (don't want to without a backup). Still running official 2.29.405.2.

Also, the reason I'm actually doing all this is because the 2.29.405.5 update wouldn't install officially - no idea why. Just got that red triangle screen when I tried multiple times. This was before I rooted or anything like that.

Anyway, I too need to get either a newer clockworkmod version or AmonRA on, but I don't know how to do this now either. Unrevoked now says it can't root my phone when I try again (with the AmonRA custom img supplied) because the firmware might be too new - which I assume is a standard error when you try to use it again on a phone that's already rooted?

Sorry, didn't want to hijack but I thought I'd chime in as I'm in the same boat. Looking forward to any help for the both of us!

Ok, I figured it out!

Well, for me anyway, not sure if this will work for the OP too. And this will involve wiping the phone, so it doesn't really solve the backup issue in the recovery image per se, but it will get you on the AmonRA recovery. Here's what I did:

- I downloaded this: http://www.multiupload.com/UOWLL86GVB This was the RUU I was on before I rooted. If this isn't yours, try http://shipped-roms.com for more

- I ran it and it had a CID error - wtf? I didn't think I needed to make a goldcard because my Desire is a generic and it *did* root successfully the first time with clockworkmod. Anyway, I followed this guide and created a gold card http://android.modaco.com/content/software...n-goldcardtool/

- It worked! with a goldcard, I could now go back to the above RUU.

- From the fresh new official RUU, I could now redo the root in unrevoked, this time supplying the AmonRA recovery image instead of using clockworkmod available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621

- Of course, since I reapplied the just before RUU, a backup at this point is kinda.....pointless really. Well, not entirely.

If you can't live with running the RUU, I'm not sure what can be done - hopefully someone can give some insight on changing the recovery image without having to go back to a RUU. ROM Manager seems able technically, I just couldn't get it to activate the alternative recovery option.

You'll lose root if you update.

Hi all,

Thomas85's way seems very long! I changed to the AmonRa recovery last week from ClockWorkMod. I didn't really like ClockWorkMod and had AmonRa on my old Hero so decided to switch. My Desire was rooted by unRevoked and I was using Stock 2.2, then I switch to MoDaCo kitchen for Stock 2.2. All read somewhere (not sure, I think it was XDA) that if you re-run unRevoked it'd work. I think it said somthing about the new unRevoked not working though (but I could stand to be corrected). The one I've downloaded is 3.32, initially I thought it was 3.01 or something but, look it worked. So I did the stuff I had done for initially rooting ('removed' HTC sync but left the other drivers, enabled debugging, etc. Then download the AmonRa recovery for the Desire over at XDA here. Now click 'file' in unRevoked, custom recovery, guide it to where you downloaded AmonRa, then plug in your phone and tell it to 'root'. This worked perfect for me and I've flashed numerous ROMs with AmonRa. I just don't bother with ROM manager, I don't find it very useful.

Hope that helps ye,

Ian

hi ian and thx for the option, just to check...u do have the gsm PVT4 Desire?

so i think what your saying is find unrevoked 3.32,run it,go to clockworkmod custom recovery, guide it to AmonRa then root again?sry this is my first root if u could step by step for me please :)

the other option is to wait for gingerbread, update phone loose root, then wait for that to be rooted by unrevoked or someone else....and heres me thinking this would be easy lol

thx for the answers guys.

Ok firstly, this is a question which is slightly embarrassing, but wtf is a PVT4 Desire!? I got my Desire only a month ago, so is relatively new. That's all I know. There are diff types of Desire? I know there's the Desire S,Z, etc. But didn't realise there was different ones within the original....

hi..if u restart the phone into fastboot then look at the top it should say PVT4,im not sure what the other version is.tbh if its only a month old im guessing it will be PVT4.

this might explain it a bit better http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853583

Hey metalsanta,

Been busy so haven't been on. It seems my Desire is PVT4. In fastboot it says Bravo PVT4 Ship S-On, and I rooted it with unRevoked, and changed the recovery, as outlined earlier.

Hope that helps,

Ian

Hey man,

Sorry been busy and not been on MoDaCo. Right, there was a thing on XDA, but I did a lot of it from what I figured would work. Basically, to begin with make sure USB Debugging is enabled. Make sure you've HTC sync installed then remove the HTC sync part but leave drivers (same as when you initially rooted). Go to this link and download the recovery. Open unRevoked without your device connected. Click file, custom recovery, guide it to where you downloaded the AmonRa image. Then plug the phone in and 'root' it. Leave it be and then it should be fine.

Let me know how you get on.

On that note, I recommend paying for MoDaCo ad free. Then you can use the kitchen, its great

NOTE FOR ANYONE USING THE APP MOVE TO SD ENABLER WHILE TRYING TO USE UNREVOKED..SET IT TO AUTO OR U WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS I HAD.

No probs :o

By the way, as I said before I'd recommend signing up here and using the kitchens. A2SD+ is very good I find, due to bad internal storage on the Desire. Then you can use the Google A2SD as well and it means you have approx. 130mb free space after flashing a new ROM :D

yes i think i will sign up,i have one question though,do i need to have s-off to use modaco roms?i was thinking of using cyanogen 7 but looks like i would need to flash with alpharev to get s-off and tbh id rather avoid more hassle.oh and ive read that if u are using amonra recovery u need to use a signed rom...is this right or is unsigned ok?

I've only rooted, still S-On. I'm using MoDaCo ROMs, its fine. Yes you do have to sign them for AmonRa, but there's an option before baking to sign the ROM, so no hassle

im back lol(been busy)....ive decided to instal one the precooked ginerbread roms before i go ahead and join the kitchen http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...en-2-3-3-gri54/ is there anything else i need to flash..ie radio g-apps?

oh and for anyone on amaonra recovery u can disable the sign check,so this being unsigned shouldnt be a problem.

once again many thanks
