Amoled or SLCD? How to distinguish?

How can we distinguish whether our phone is with an SLCD or Amoled screen? Is it written somewhere either on the phone or its packing?

Any simple way of figuring out what type of screen does our desire have?

There is a simple way to do it.

Desires that have the AMOLED screen have it printed on the box. My Desire is SLCD and it just says 4.3" (or some number like that) screen. So it doesn't say AMOLED on the box.

But you don't have to worry if it's AMOLED or not anymore (if it's because of rooting). Now you have to worry if it's PVT4 or not.

If your desire is 4.3", it is not a desire, it is desire HD. Desire has 3.7" display. As for the first post: HTC decided to switch to slcd panels in august 2010, due to lack of supply of amoled display, so it depends when you bought it. As bpivk said: usually, on the back of the box, it is written "Amoled" on amoled devices.

I didn't know the exact number so I've just guessed. I guess I've mixed up the two screens.

But the point stands. If it says AMOLEd then it's AMOLED if it says screen then it's SLCD.

Well, what I have is an orange packing (a black box). I couldnt find any reference to Amoled on the box. Does it imply I has a SLCD in my hand now?

Isnt there any other way to check this?

If it doesn't say Amoled then it's SLCD. Unless they used a different box.

If the phone is new then it's an SLCD.

I can't find my box so I can't make a picture for you. Why do you want to know which screen you have? Is it because of rooting or something else.

Edit: Here is the picture of the box (well actually it's side if you're really nitpicky). http://pocketnow.com/html/portal/news/0000...0SLCD%20Box.jpg

The box is NOT a guaranteed way of telling the two apart. My desire is AMOLED (came with an AMOLED-only bootloader version: 0.82), and came in a white HTC box with no mention of AMOLED on it. (Although if the box does say AMOLED its AMOLED, if it doesn't it could be either)

Older bootloaders didn't support the SLCD screen, so that was one way of telling, but most desires are likely to have v0.92 or above now, so that doesn't help distinguish.

The only sure way is to look closely at the screen, possibly under a magnifying glass (or with a tiny drop of water on the screen).

AMOLED screens have a pentile arrangement of subpixels. This means that if you are looking at an area of the screen where there is a dark colour (black) to the left of a white area the transition has a pink toothcomb look to it if you look very carefully

(the subpixels on an AMOLED desire are arranged

RG BG RG BG

BG RG BG RG)

on a normal LCD they are arranged:

RGB RGB RGB RGB

RGB RGB RGB RGB)
