Motorola Atrix out of stock with Orange UK

I called Orange last night as I'm the my loyalty upgrade part of my contract. They don't currently have the Motorola Atrix in stock, but have put me on the waiting list with what looks like quite a good deal (phone + multimedia dock on 18 month at £150 for the phone and £25/month +£5 for insurance). Looking at other networks, I can't get a better deal on a similar phone as the insurance with Orange is so cheap (and I tend to abuse my phones!).

But, is the Atrix a good upgrade (I currently have an HTC Hero), or should I hold of for the Samsung Galaxy SII or the HTS Sensation? Orange have the SGSII in their 'coming soon' section, and I assume they'll get the Sensation shortly.

Oh, and another appeal for a Motorola Atrix subforum please Paul!

I currently have the HTC Desire HD and I done the same scenario on Thursday when i ordered they told me that the Atrix was out of stock and the same info about a waiting list and I will receive a text when it is avaliable again. I like the idea of the Atrix docking features. Think its excellent that Orange are giving their upgrading customers a Free Dock, Keyboard, Mouse and Remote!!. However i think the lapdock is a bit expensive.

I called yesterday and they had no stock updates as yet.

Cant wait to get the phone now! Hopefully hear something soon

I must have got in there just at the right moment as my Atrix arrived on Tuesday :)

I've upgraded from a rooted San Francisco and I must admit I was expecting more (not sure what) from the Atrix. It's a really nice device, feels well built, runs nicely, etc but there's just something about it that I'm not 100% happy about.

Maybe it's the potential lack of a custom rom for it (due to a locked bootloader I believe). There's masses of storage space on the phone thanks to it's internal SD card plus whatever external SD you choose to use. Some apps seem to get confused that there's a second (or third!) storage area though.

I ignored Motoblur but my Facebook contacts wouldn't sync so had to set it up, but it seems pretty pointless to me when vanilla Android does a better job. Seems like Motorola complicating matters just because they can.

The dock is nice, not sure if I'll use it on the TV though. Currently it just charges my phone on my desk (but doesn't connect to the PC!!? Sillymoto).

If I had to choose again, I'd maybe say go for a SGSII or LG O2X where you don't feel limited by the manufacturer imposing their will. In my opinion, if Motorola want to be a true rival to other manufacturers in the Android stakes then they need to get onboard with the geeks. Embrace the custom rom community and we'll lap up any new phone they release. I'd never heard of HTC a couple of years ago and now even my parents recognise the brand - I call that progress!

Pretty shitty that HTC are doing their best to screw that image by locking the bejebus out of the bootloader.

You can go to a store like p4u/cpw and upgrade with them getting yourself a sgsII or a o2x, the o2x has some huge support cutom rom wise already, and the sgsII will too.

If you had to choose again? You can always return it you know...

Even though I've used it to death for the past 3 days?

I should probably add that I am still really happy with the Atrix  I'd no doubt have niggles with any new phone, the joys of being an early adopter!

I suppose I just don't get that feel good factor I had with the San Francisco - getting a handset for £90, not tied to a contract, can be rooted and is a half-decent performer.

I think you've got 7 days 'cooling off period' to change your mind if you get it by phone. As long as you haven't damaged it, then you should be able to call them and get it sent back.

That rings a bell. I think I'll stick with the Atrix to be honest, it's pretty much doing everything I want it to without being rooted so hopefully the custom rom builders will keep working at cracking the bootloader issue.

Another niggly thing to add to the list above is the power button. Because it's recessed (it doubles as the fingerprint reader) it's not as easy to press as a surface mounted button would be. Also, when in the HD dock it's not as easy to get to. Nothing important, but a niggle nonetheless.

Bit the bullet and upgraded to an Atrix in an Orange store on Friday. Decided I couldn't wait! They had them in stock at my local store (Canterbury), but the free work/play kit was out of stock, so they'll be sending that to me at some point apparently.

Great phone, loving it so far! Just started a new thread on XDA Developers as there doesn't seem to be much info on the Orange UK version at the moment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080490

@joff01 anything you can add to that post as there doesn't look like being a forum for the phone on Modaco!

Thanks for the tip, I'll see you there! Hopefully MoDaCo will sort us out a forum soon (hint!)
