Hi,

Since my scare with my new phone going into S/W Update on it's own and then being stuck in the S/W loop (thanks to Cyberden for helping out) but managed to get it back on track. I've looked through the forum but was wondering what order I need to update the phone with roms etc? I take it it's root the phone first then what are the next steps...? I know there's plenty of threads so could you quickly list a step....im scared to bugger the phone up.

Many thanks.

1. Root with SuperOneClick

2. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery

3. Do a Nandroid Backup (incase you make a mistake or want to go back to how you were)

4. Wipe Wipe Wipe

5. Flash Rom of choice

Afternoon..

OK, first things first - have you definatley got an LG Optimus 2X, or is it a T-Mobile G2X? Check this by going into about phone, if your device is a p990 then you're in the right place

The first step is to root the phone and get superuser installed. The easiest way of achieving this is following the 1-click root post over on xda (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182)

After you've rooted and superuser has been pushed to your handset via the 1click root process above the next step is to install a recovery image so you can flash ROMs. The easiest way of doing this is to download ROMManager from the market. Within it the top option you'll see is "Flash Clockwork recovery". It'll ask for confirmation of your handset model before it attempts to flash it. It'll also when loading ask for superuser permissions. Give it access when the superuser prompt appears.

Once you're rooted & your recovery is flashed the first thing you should do next is create a nandroid backup. You'll need an external SD-card for this [i.e one that you buy seperately and slot into the phone's transflash slot], which you'll need anyway to flash ROMs. To boot into recovery you have a couple of options. Either

1) Boot into it from the ROMManager App

2) Use Paul's reboot into recovery app (99p from market)

3) Power off your handset, when you power it back on hold down both the powerbutton & volume down simulatiously for quite a while (it takes a while for Clockwork recovery to kick in).

Once you're in clockwork recovery there's an option called backup/restore. Select backup. This will proceed to back-up your current setup - (stock ROM with root). You navigate around CWM with volume up / down and the power button to 'select' a menu entry

The next step is to decide what ROM you want to flash. There's a fair few on XDA using Paul's MCR as a base, however some insist on updating the baseband (the bit that talks to your network operator). If you did want to go down flashing one of these you'll have to follow the process here to update your baseband to 0405 http://android.modaco.com/content/lg-optim...35-21-20110405/

If you didn't want to update your baseband and just flash MCR15 then you can do so, however it's recommended to update your baseband first (although not essential).

You can either cook your own ROM, or use the vanilla one.

The steps to flash both are the same.

1) copy the <ROM>.zip file onto your externalSD card

2) Boot into clockwork mod recovery

3) **** Wipe all data ****

4) Select "install .zip from sd"

5) use the volume up / down and power button to navigate to the directory your rom is located.

e: when I first flashed 15 I forgot to do a wipe, against all known advise I took the battery out mid-flash, wiped and tried to reflash. By this time Paul's installation process had started to convert the file system and had half finished it. In order to resolve I had to convert the file system back to ext3 (using the zip package in the link below), then reflash the ROM.

aye...

P.S - don't be tempted to flash directly from the ROMManager app, you MUST flash from the ClockworkMod recovery, until koush updates ROMManager

e: no problem - don't mind taking the time to explain things, I remember how scared I was the first time I tried playing around with my g1, it's an expensive bit of kit and if you've already had a bad experience it can be quite off-putting to re-attempt. Remember, if worse comes to worst you can always roll back to stock using the NVFlash and APX drivers. Think of your nandroid backup as the penultimate way of getting things back up and running and the nvflash method as a fail-safe.

P.P.S - if you do ever want to restore your "stock nandroid with root" backup you MUST convert your paritions back to ext3 by flashing the zip detailed above (last paragraph of my post)

Good luck!

Just an FYI you dont need to root the phone before flashing Clockwork, by doing it using Pauls way it gives the phone root in the process,

sorry to bump this thread, but im fairly new to this and need some help.

I'm following this guide, and im stuck at the point highlighted in bold.

I click 'flash clockworkmod recovery, in rom manager, but when i do it just comes up 'an error occured while attempting to run priveliged commands!'

also, it doesnt ask me to give super user permissions, so am i doing something wrong?

please try not to use complicated language, im not an idiot but i just dont get all the complex language most of you use, so the simpler the better :)

thanks guys

it means your phone is not rooted yet. You have to root your phone, then for all apps that needs root access, you'll be given a chance to "allow root access".

okay, i've definately rooted my phone using superoneclick, but it is still coming up with the same messgae!

can anyone suggest why?

thanks.

if u r sure that u have superuser access, that means when u run rom manager it asks to allow superuser, then u only need to wait for a few seconds after the screen shows. Then tap the 'flash cwm'. If fails, wait a bit longer than try again. Not sure why it happens, but i experienced it before. If still fails, then you need to flash it using smartflash. Find Paul's version of clockworkmod at this forum and follow the instructions.
