firmware updates

Hi everyone, this is my first android phone so you'll have to excuse me if I ask any particularly dense questions. I rooted the phone but I can't seem to get the firmware to update from v10b, both the in-phone option and the LG update app say I'm uptodate. My phone is locked and branded to O2 Ireland, could this have something to do with it? On my previous Nokias I'd debrand them and change the country code to get the latest firmware but I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this on Android/O2x, would getting an unlock code help or would I have to install a custom rom (I'd been hoping to build up to that once I was a little more confident!).

Thanks alot, and again apologies if I'm asking something obvious, I've googled and looked around but can't seem to find a solution.

I've now unlocked the phone and have it rooted but the LG Updater still see's it as V10B firmware and claims this is the latest update, is there anyway to update the firmware on the stock rom?

You can do what I did, flash a 10a ROM via smartflash, and then update. You'll still only get updated to a 10B, but at least it'll be the latest one.

You need to update your baseband. that is the last update that you are missing and that is why you are getting the Update notice.

But flashing the baseband isn't enough, you also need to install the RIL that comes with it.

Look into the baseband sticky thread for more details.

After i did that, there are no more updates :P

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice much appreciated, before today I couldn't honestly have told you what "baseband" was and why you'd find it on a phone, but I'm now updated to the 0405 baseband!

Another stupid question (I realise it's totally unrelated but didn't want to clog up the board with more topics) , is there any need to keep F-Secure or is it just scare mongering, it is an incredibly irritating little app, constantly firing off alerts and bleeps with the slightest provocation, but if it's serves an actual purpose I might put up with it.

your quite fine to get rid of it, so long as you only download apps from the android market, you will be fine.

its not that you cant get virus' on your phone, but the only way to get them is by installing dodgy chinese apps.

Thanks for that, F-Secure now removed from the phone and everything seems blissfully peaceful :D , I'd been mounting/unmounting and rebooting the phone repeatedly while flashing a new rom and tweaking the phone so F-Secure had been going absolutely mad with nonstop beeps and alerts everytime.

Since flashing fr17 though I seem to have been hit by the battery problems a few users seem to suffer from, yesterday the phone died around 5pm from a full charge in the morning with moderate wifi usage and no gps/3g data usage, and the battery stats show screen and wifi as quite low in terms of drain. I had it unplugged from charger for about two hours this morning, no wifi/call/data usage and after a friend borrowed it to play Angry Birds for an hour the cpu usage listed "dialer" as the top cpu usage over Angry Birds which seemed odd.

The battery seems to have a life of it's own these days :D , as soon as I flashed fr17 I ran the battery all the way down, charged it to 100 percent and calibrated it and the next day it ran perfectly, almost 50 percent after a full day's use with wifi email retrieval every half hour and some brief browsing and gps use. Now without any new apps being added it seems to plummet, an hour after taking it off the charger it had dropped to 84 percent with nothing but standby and briefly collecting/reading two emails.

It seems to start things in the background for no apparent reason as well, I'll kill everything but the essentials with task killer and 5 minutes later it will show google maps, power amp, smartshare, sns and more running despite the phone doing nothing but idling!
