I STILL have Keyboard Dock Battery Drain Issues. Do you?

Hiya,

I have been very dissapointed in the TF Dock battery life. I have noticed that, even with the tablet turned OFF completely (not in sleep mode) and attached to the dock (closed), the dock will continue to lose its charge, and then drain my transformers battery!

As a test, I left my transformer and dock off and closed, and the battery life of my transformer went down from 81% to 71% in about 10 hours. This would be acceptable if it was on standby, but I don't expect my transformers battery to be drained when it's not even turned on!

This drain is despite the newest firmware updates (3.1 android, the 209 dock version). Given my usage pattern (not very frequent), this results in my transformer having LESS battery life with the dock attached; the exact opposite of what I had hoped for.

Do others experience a similar issue, or should I return my dock? I heard that ASUS were aware of these issues, but I'm not sure whether their response to that was the 209 update, which actually didn't fix anything for me (I didnt have any of the other dock issues users experienced prior to the update).

Thanks,

James

Same, drives me nuts!

I'm hoping Asus fix it ASAP!

I wonder whether that can be fixed with software? Sounds more like a hardware issue to me. If the machine is off how can any software run.

Because the dock goes into a low power state and never switches off. It needs to go into a off state :D

To me, a low power state shouldnt drain 1-2% an hour when nothing at all is happening though. Also, when the transformer turns off, the red light on the side that beeps when the dock is low on power stops beeping, whereas when the tablet is docked but sleeping, the light continues flashing. Since the dock is supposed to go to a low power state when the tablet is sleeping, doesn't the light turning off suggest that the power state of the dock changes again when the dock turns off?

I have got my RMA number anyway, and will send the dock off in the next day or two. Since atleast some people don't seem to have this issue, I'm hoping that perhaps the hardware is at fault in my dock and it can be repaired. Otherwise, I'll have to store the two seperately so that my battery life isn't rinsed when I'm not using them!

Got the same issue.

Problem is KB is more of a charger rather than a battery and it takes more power to drive the keyboard too.

Solution for me is to undock before storing. When tablet runs down I plug the KB in which takes it back up to 75-80% before the battery in the KB is fully discharged.

That said, just did a 9.5 hour transatlantic flight playing games and watching videos with no battery issues. Showing at about 65% at the end of the flight (KB was docked continually).

Pretty good and way better than the iPad.

Aah, Idont want to have to store separately; it negates theextra screen protection the keyboard gives, as well as a more compact storage solution!

After 8 hours dock at 99% tablet at 95%

Night 2 - Docked tablet in sleep. Tablet and dock at 100%.

After 8 hours dock at 78% tablet at 99%

I was going to be lazy and ask how you got the dock %ages, but found this :

... or do you use something better?

I am already on this.

I did 2 tests one in sleep, another in shutdown.

My dock is one of those that could only charge to 97%.

Night 1 : Tab 100%, Dock 97%, Sleep with WIFI off. 8-9 hours : Tab 100%, Dock 80%

Night 2 : Tab 100%, Dock 97%, shut down (confirmed shut down). 8-9 hours : Tab 100%, Dock 80%

See the similarity?

Maybe the fix was to reduce the drain from 5%/hour that I saw some was suffering from to 2% like this. But this is still not acceptable, especially in the shut down mode.

I charged the tablet and dock on Friday morning. Unplugged at about 8:30

Tablet is currently on 88%, dock is on 3%

That's only very light usage. I'm going to run them down to zero and charge up, but I do hope there's a firmware update coming soon. If the tablet is above, say, 85%, the dock power should be shut down. Powering the dock from the tablet can't be that taxing and the constant exchange of power between them is probably unnecessary.

I don't trust the battery stats page - it says that it's only been on battery for 10 hours 17 minutes... :/

0209 is not the new version - ASUS DE did not give info on the version of new dock-FW - it is only the version my dock shows.

ASUS did not answer yet- they rescued themselves into the weekend...

ASUS De answered, they are refering to 0209 as new FW for Dock.

Did not expect anything better - we all know 0209 isn`t new at all...

Some figures of Batt-draining

Start T-Batt:99% - DockBatt 69%

4 hours OFF

T-Batt 99% - DockBatt 62% --> lost 7 %

Another 6 1/2 hours OFF

T-Batt 99% - DockBatt 52% --> lost another 10%

Another 8 hours OFF

T-Batt 97% - DockBatt 37% --> lost another 15%

--> In 18 1/2 hours DockBatt lost 32% - T docked and completely OFF

On Standby (Wifi off) 5 hours gave 30% loss on DockBatt

Gave my measuring to ASUS DE today as they still claim no issue - or better they did not respond on it for 8 days - ignoring any postings on this issue.

Similar behavior experienced here.

Because the tablet thinks its charging when the dock is attached, the tablet battery stats never show correctly... it's a shame really, they would have had a magical device if this worked as expected out of the box.

Now I have to recommend this device as "it's great, but you can't leave the dock attached"

Not cool.

Well... the big question is do you get the 16 hours as advertised or not? I know I do... in the end it's the result that counts doesn't it?

But only when not going in standby or shuting off completely - in this case your 16 hours are gone due to battery drain. The combo is getting empty without running it in a few days - surely inacceptable - this counts as well in my eyes.

This is incredibly annoying! I am very happy with my transformer, but if I can't travel overnight with the tablet docked without losing half the battery - it becomes practically useless. I emailed Asus and their reply said they were aware of the issue but couldn't guarantee an update would fix the issue. This leaves me in total qaundry as whether to send it back or not. I will check when my return window ends and hope a fix appears soon!

ASUS not being able to fix this viaSW - so what - they have to replace our devices with working ones.

This is a severe failure on a core component of the Transformer.

Well... annoying != broken and as long as there is no word on standby usage when docked they don't have to do anything. To be honest, I'm using my TF with the dock attached only and can easily manage two days without charging, on a regular use basis. Waaaay better than my girlfriends IPAD2 I can tell you!
