Guest proclean2000
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a...e=search_result Now a downloadable app from the market. Thank you again for all of your input. We republished the app in the market today and have completely overhauled the app and install process to make it much easier. I would like to apologize to the community as I have read through the posts and understandably some are upset because this went from free to a paid app. The reason is the file went from an 8 part download for the image to a single 1.5gb file. The hosting costs us quite a bit of the price we charge for downloading the files. We did not want to use free file hosting as this was a better option in our opinion for the end user (quite a few times unzipping the 8 part file into a single zip was creating an unusable ubuntu image in our testing). We also are using any of the remaining proceeds to pay the Dev who overhauled the app to the current version posted above to keep it looking and working nicely. This Ubuntu image will be updated frequently and updates are always free. We also are looking to port other versions of linux for Android and once again our under paid (almost free) Dev has been so kind to take this project on for us. If the MODS here see it fit to remove this post I would encourage them to do so as it is not our intention to take advantage of the hard earned monies of anyone who may decide to purchase this app to support our developer. If you chose to support our project we greatly appreciate it and thank all of the users who have purchased the app to date ;-) Edited July 5, 2011 by proclean2000
Guest Azurren
Will defiantly try this. All my other devices have been able to run Ubuntu but the Streak is the first device that it may actually be useful on.. Not sure about the speed of VLC though :)

Guest proclean2000
I meant VNC (So similar :) ) Ubuntu appears to start in terminal emulator but I get "connection refused" with VNC B) Running StreakDroid 1.9.0 If it is starting in the terminal it is up and running so it would seem that the problem is with VNC. Which VNC are you using, and what port do you have it set to? Password all lower case : ubuntu, port:5900, address: localhost Hope that helps, although you seem pretty sharp and probably have it configured that way. Guest mrmrmrmr
thanks. it works fine on my Streak with StreakDroid 1.9.1-b6 I'm now installing wireshark to see if I'll be able to capture traffic. I have a question though: as this Ubuntu is running VNC server so that we can connectto it locally, we should be able to connect from outside (lets say from my PC on the same LAN with Streak) using a VNC client. is that correct ? but I can't connect, why ? also, is there any way to put it in background ? I mean with your method the terminal emulator should stay open. I had also used Backtrack for Android and in that image I didn't have to leave terminal emulator open. after the chroot commandit was giving me shell on Backtrack. Guest jdouce
Have you tried booting this with a modified boot.img that way, no need for rom downgrade... you can run a completely independent OS way android isn't using up resources.
Guest Azurren
This will throw what may appear to be a few errors and that is is OK. It will lastly say "Please wait while booting the Ubuntu img, please wait as this could take a while"... If it is starting in the terminal it is up and running so it would seem that the problem is with VNC. Which VNC are you using, and what port do you have it set to? Password all lower case : ubuntu, port:5900, address: localhost Hope that helps, although you seem pretty sharp and probably have it configured that way. Mine ends with: "Exiting chroot environment and syncing memory to storage Do not exit until finished - doing so may corrupt the ubuntu.img!" I'm using android-vnc-viewer from the market. Also may desktop PC can't connect (Although I'm not sure if external connections are allowed anyhow) Seeing how other people have got it working I will try re-uploading the ubuntu.img file :) Edited June 26, 2011 by Azurren

Yes and NO BUENO!!!!! Just a FYI, I am sure it can be done however this image is not designed for that specifically. Natively when I can get Ubuntu booted on its own I can never get past a shell and get the x server to start. Have given up on it as the risk involved with this method is far less and seems to allocate memory to the running environment (Android or Linux) pretty well. This is why I have suggested the overclock to overcompensate for any slowness of shared resource allocation.

Guest jdouce
we need it to be .ext2 file ... the boot image attached will boot ubuntu.ext2 from the root of the sd card in order to remove the risk flash it to the recovery patition then when you boot into recovery it will boot to ubuntu if you flash it to the recovery it wont break your android install so you essentially have dual boot.ubuntuboot.img
Guest Azurren
any cmments about my questions ? I can connect to my Ubuntu from my pc (Using a vnc client, any will work) Ensure you have the correct IP for your device (localhost will NOT work on anything other than the host machine) Not meaning to be patronizing :)

As always VNC is just terrible.. :) But its fully usable, just expect some freezes if you try to run anything to intensive. Also I suggest changing the Ubuntu "overclock" governor to performance asap to minimize freezing B)

And then in android , I'm playing Angry Bird Season, Angry Bird Ori or Angry Bird Rio without problem. I have more than 70 apps in my Streak mid_life_crisis Old 25th June 2011, 04:20 PM RetweetReTweet this post # 68 report Edit: With nothing more than Busybox, Overclock Widget, Android VNC, Terminal Emulator, Adobe Flash 10.1 and Angry Birds original installed, this thing is amazing. As a test, I started a game of Birds and opened a text editor in Ubuntu. I'm going seamlessly back and forth between the two. I even uninstalled Seasons with them running in the background and picked right up where I left off. At this moment I am impressed. Still disappointed about Seasons, though. If your using remote VNC then turn the screen off and see the performance decrease (and eventual freeze) Then again I know very little about chroot.. It could work perfectly.. Tho I doubt it :)

Guest at_homeuk
This post has changed. It contained a process and offered downloads to enable the installation of ubuntu on our Dell Streak. The origional post has been deleted and now contains a link to a paid application on the Market. I feel this is totally wrong and a missuse of this site. Ive noticed the post on XDA has been closed. That's a shame :) Could have at least left the guide for "advanced users" and push the .apk as the "Easy, simple" option
Guest at_homeuk
I agree. But if you now read this top to bottom it appears all the possitive feedback refers to the App on the Market and not what was posted before. This seems to me just wrong. Guest Lancez
the link dose lead to market place, however, there is no actual .apk file to download. looks to me like, OP just wanted to point this app out rather than posting an illegal content. thanks

If you had read this post when it was first published there was no mention that this was going to be a paid app. You were able to follow instructions and install ubuntu on your streak and a lot of possitive feedback was left both here and on XDA, this functionality has been removed the first post edited and a link to a paid for app was inserted and that I think is wrong. Anyway just making a point, Thankyou for your reply. Edited June 30, 2011 by at_homeuk

Even so he's fully entitled to post / create a market APK but modifying his original post like that makes it look as though we have given his app positive reviews (Which non of use have actually tried) Needless to say if it was a "dodgy" app then according to this thread we have all given it good, positive, feedback.
