Hi all, as the title says I'm a total noob when it comes to andriod, never mind all this rooted, kitchen, custon rom carry on! I have been reading on this forum for a while now and still have no better understanding! I've joined up now because my phone has started giving me hassle! I hope someone on here would be kind enough to give me some help or point me in the direction of some info that would explain clearly what I should be doing.

I recently had my phone nnumber moved over from my old provider to my new one(orange). I recieved a message with new settings from orange. After rebooting certain apps wil not load, neither will the phone settings. I would appreciate it if someone could take the time to give me some "try this..." assaitance! :)

Hi Paul,

Welcome aboard!

Have a few suggestions

1) I too ported my number over to Orange and had a *similar* issue - check your time&date settings - by default (i think) the phone's set to use 'network provided values' ocassionaly when you change your provider it'll have trouble picking up the automaticly sent values. Some apps have (as part of their license checking) date/timestamp checks - so manually set the time & date if it's out [that's if you can get into settings!?!]

2) If you're using FR19 then Paul has modified the "android settings" section of the ROM , something to do with DRM / LG system update & making more memory available. It's possible (???) that the APN modification (changing from XXX network to Orange) has done something with Paul's version of "android settings". I can't remember where I saw it, but there's a flashable ZIP he made with the settings file - you could try flashing that zip (i'll edit this post if I find it) to get them back

e: "Jun 21 Fr19 RC 1Removed software update client (and patched Settings APK), gains 20MB RAM"

-> check Paul's posts around that date, to find a flashable APK

3) re-flash your ROM (without wiping) - will do the same as above, but will take longer, and with scope for more side affects.

4) Nandroid restore

5) wipe and then flash your ROM :(

You could try a factory reset?

That would lose all your data etc though so prob a last resort.

What state is the phone in now, can you use it at all?

Or does it fail to even start up?

Was that zip not related to a mistake Paul found which was then fixed? The zip simply saved a rebake.

I suggest following jon.m.knight instructions but maybe flashing the Fr19 prebake instead (as that's confirmed as a working rom)

Again for clarity:

a ) re-flash Fr19 (without wiping) - see if this fixes it.

b ) wipe data + cache (+ system if you want to go all out - just don't accidentally hit sdcard like I did) and then flash Fr19 Prebake

------------------------------------------------------------

If that's really foreign language you will be better off just wiping the phone as airchie suggests.

If you can't access settings then you can turn your phone off. Then holding both the vol down + Power buttons your phone will start in recovery mode, if you don't know what this is you'll have the standard one which automatically wipes your phone and restarts. This should allow you to access your settings again but the phone will be as new (empty) you might want to write down what apps you have installed for example.

Edit: added second part.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll give it a go at the weekend and report back.

Ok so I did the above and gto a clean phone! Now I've rooted it with superoneclick. Waht should I do next?

1) Download ROMManager from the market

2) Run ROM Manager and select the 'flash recovery option'

This will make it so that you can in effect boot into a 'bootloader' / app before your ROM loads. From the recovery image / app you can flash a ROM.

In order to access the recovery image you have to hold the powerbutton in as well as the volume down key when you turn your phone on (keep holding them both down!!). It takes a while to kick in, but eventually you'll be presented with a menu. Use the volume up / down keys to navigate, and the power button at the top to select an option.

Once you've familiarised yourself with the recovery image the next step is to flash a ROM. You need to download or 'bake' a ROM first. As you're still new I'd advise downloading the prebake of FR19. Once you've downloaded this, copy it to your phone's SDCard.

Then, boot into recovery and select "wipe all", followed by flash zip, then flash from sd / choose zip.

Navigate to the ROM you downloaded, flash it, and wait... it can take a while on the first boot.

That's it!

Forgot to mention; before you flash a ROM, make sure you select the backup option in clockwork mod recovery image. ... Then wipe all and flash your ROM
