Just seen this on CPW

http://www.carphonew...INTERNET-TABLET

The reviews are not too bad. But there seem to be no custom roms ??

But the price looks good for 10.1 capacitive screen table??

Anyone have any views or opinions?

I've had the Archos 70, it's little brother, since November 2010. I use it everyday for internet, movies, music, reading books and comics....

Easy to add market and root, thin and light.

It can be a bit slow, but £149 for the 10 inch is a very reasonable price.

I'm trying to justify ordering one for myself , but I already have an Advent Vega which is great.

There are good sections on Archos Gen8 tablets over at XDA and Archos Fans forum.

My brother-in-Law just bought one. It's a great piece of kit. I found a market apk file and he now has full market.

I would be a bit cautious about buying one of these (I have owned one).

Yes, it's basically quite a good tablet, especially for the new price. I was very happy with it.... at first.

BUT

After about three months, the USB host port is highly likely to fail. (google it). At the same time the tablet will stop being able to go into sleep mode and every time you're done using it you will have to shut it down and reboot it when you want to use it again. Or, it may start endlessly rebooting during use.

The cause (as I understand it from the various threads) appears to be an internal component which fails prematurely. Archos seem to be in some sort of denial about the problem and, should you send the unit in for repair, you may be waiting for a very long time. I waited six weeks for it to be fixed by Archos, before getting a refund from Micro Anvika (who were very good about the whole thing). There have also been some pretty negative comments about the quality of Archos support and repair services, with users reporting rude and/or technically incompetent support staff and units returned unrepaired.

The speakers apparently are also known for fairly high failure rates (I imagine the power amplifier that drives them is failing, not the speakers).

At any rate, it looks like Archos got some engineering calculations wrong or have major quality control issues. Buyer beware....
