I am all for backing someone who indulges me for the thirst to reminisce whilst I game and DotEmu are set to do just that when they release R-Type in September. It is like the gaming gods heard me when I wished for R-Type to be re-made! Not long to wait either as release date is set for 12th September!

If you never had the pleasure of playing the original R-Type then you are in for a real treat; kitsch graphics, simple yet addictive gameplay and the most awesome '80s soundtrack. I wouldn't have thought much will have been changed in the game as there wasn't a lot to dislike about the original and I know the famous 'charge shot' is still in play!

8 levels and 8 space bosses to defeat with items and power-ups along the way! and the ability to boast to your mates with OpenFeint... I literally can not wait to play this game on my XPLAY and as soon as I can I will get a review up.

In the meantime here are some screen shots

Here is a video of the original game to remind you all of it's greatness and to introduce any newcomers to it's incredible soundtrack

12th September is finally here and R-Type certainly is on the Android Market. Excitement doesn't come close to how I am feeling... maybe slight hysteria washed down with some nostaglia? I am sure you are all feeling the same so here is the direct link to R-Type on the Market

and yes! It is Xperia PLAY optimised for complete gaming pleasure!

Pilot the R-9a Arrowhead, the last hope of the human race and it's war against alien invasion! Your mission is clear but not so easy; blast off and strike the evil Bydo Empire! (Any of this jogging your memory?) Initally developed and published by Irem way back in 1987, R-Type has become the essential game on any arcade cabinet, Amiga, Amstrad, Commodore 64 and PC. Thank goodness DotEmu has ported and published for us on Android.

R-Type is compatible with devices running 2.1 and up and with a screen res of 480x320 HVGA or up. Supported devices will include Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus S, Xoom, Galaxy Tab etc. etc.

Cool! Are there minimum CPU specs? Market says it is compatible with my ZTE Blade, but I wonder is it actually playable?

I have no info on minimum CPU requirements. I have emailed DotEmu to find out (expect a long delay before response. I am sure they are super busy today). If Android Market say it is compatible you should be fine... you can always request a refund if not but quietly confident you and your ZTE Blade will be fine.

Definitely playable on zte blade, running GSF b17 at stock speed, no lag or slowdowns experienced during a brief play.

R-Type is storming the Android Market just as I thought it would. Here are the ranking statistics for DotEmu's classic across the world:

#3 Top New Paid Apps in France, #4 Top New Paid Apps in UK #13 Top New Paid Apps in US.

If you have yet to download R-Type or even played it before, get on over to the Android Market now! HERE and it still sits at the tiny price of £2.61 :-D Let's do it justice and get it to #1!

It's only 0.99c in the Amazon App Store :D. An absolute steal!
