after cyanogen install - cannot install ROMs

I originally posted about apps in the main forum, but since the solution to that is to apply an update ROM (i.e. the google apps ROM) it would seem I need a better subject line to get attention about the new problem!

here is what I've said on the other thread, about what I've tried to install ROMs since installing Cyanogen (rexchun's racer port from the blade release):

1) in order to use the bundled ClockworkMOD ROMManager, you must flash the recovery bootloader again - BUT since it's the standard Cyanogen app it doesn't have the ZTE Racer model in the list, and I am not tempted to brick my phone by installing a dud bootloader.

2) you can't manually flash the ROM using the existing bootloader, because the bootloader cannot detect the action of the resistive home button (and thus you cannot persuade it to DO anything...)

3) Cannot install any new ROMs, whether patch updates or whole system restores, because neither ROM Manager nor Recovery(Manager) will play ball with Sebastian 404's recovery from here.

Now additionally, I've forgotten which version of ROMmanager I originally installed to get the "recovery"/bootloader in place - was it different to the standard one now on my phone from Cyanogen? if not, why has it stopped recognising the racer in the recovery autoinstall?

any help much appreciated as this is blocking me installing google apps and thus installing ANY apps! :s

ok we`ll need some more info to aid us in helping you get this corrected:

are you gen1 or gen2 ?

if you`ve installed a recovery through ROM MANAGER you will have problems as it only supports devices that are officially supported by cyanogen, recently ROM MANAGER has release a recovery for Racer but it may only be for gen2 devices

what recovery method have you got installed at the moment ie CWM ? which version and can you access recovery (vol- and power button), plz link me the version you tried

at present are you using custom rom or still on stock rom?

if you`ve got no recovery at present what happened when you tried to install a recovery through "Recovery Manager" and have you tried the FastBoot method yet to install CWM recovery

Are there ANY gen2 racers? It's a 3UK one, I assumed it was gen1.

See my original post, it's by Sebastian404.

It's a custom ROM from rexchun I think, will give you a direct link when I can get to laptop in a couple of hours.

EDIT: a couple of hours later, I can't find a copy of the ROM on the laptop - will post again this evening.

I noticed the same thing with Sebastian's recovery (v4.0.1.5). You can move up/down with volume keys, but it's impossible to select anything, because the resistive keys (home, back & menu) aren't working. Booted back in (stock 2.1) ROM, installed ROM Manager v4.8.0.2 (latest version) and selected 'ZTE Racer' in the list (it's at the bottom). This flashed CWM v5.0.2.7, which is, apparently, for GEN2 devices only. Luckily booting to the ROM still worked, so I installed Photom's ClockworkMod GUI v4.0.1.5 and using the on-screen buttons I can finally select the ROM I wanted to install tongue.gif

@TS: You can try to install Photom's ClockworkMod GUI with fastboot?

Phew! someone else noticed the problem!

ahh, where can I get this new version? my ROM seems to have come with ROM Manager v3.0.1.2 on it! Do I need to be back on a stock ROM? if so, how to I install that?!

ok, the soft keys dont work anyway in CWM with racer only the hard keys volume rocker, make call, end call and power button, but installing 4.0.1.5 .img seems to have key mapping issue, easiest way to solve it was to downgrade to 4.0.1.0. then update to 4.0.1.5 with the update .zip file HERE copy to sdcrad and in stall through CWM

then if you wish you can install the update.zip for the touch screen version PhoTom CWM HERE copy to sdcard and again install through CWM, reboot into CWM

OK, I cannot apply any updates in recovery/bootloader mode though.

I think the only way forward is to install a different version of CWM ROM manager / recovery manager, which can install a new recovery - for which I will need a an APK file (so I can put on dropbox and download on the phone directly, and install with a file manager.)

Does anyone have a link to ROM Manager v4.8.0.2 (latest version) that FezzFest mentioned? As I said, needs to be a downloadable APK, not a market link (as it doesn't let me download those).

HERE recovery manager that works on 2.3 roms (you may have to update the database first from within recovery manager) then install THIS through recovery manager

once you`ve done try rebooting into CWM (hold vol- and press power button) i suggest re-installing the rom and installing a different gapps package

if you still have problems installing CWM try doing it through terminal emulator

1. Download recovery-clockwork-4.0.1.0-mooncake-gen1.img from THIS , rename it to recovery.img and copy to the root of the sd card

2. Open terminal emulator and type "su" and hit enter (this will give super user to the emulator) and after that type the following

flash _image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

and you should be fine.

THANK YOU - this totally enabled the green/red buttons and allowed me to flash the google apps ROM - now linked to my google account and happily downloading apps.

Now the proud owner of a moddable gingerbread flavoured racer! oh the possibilities... :) Thanks.
