Installing custom ROM

I'm keen to try one of the custom ROMs from this site, however, I have spent a lot of time downloading apps and setting up the phone 'just right'. I've currently using Link2SD and have most apps installed on the created partition.

From reading the procedures on installing the custom ROMs, you do a NAND backup and then a full wipe. I was wondering, if I flash a custom ROM, what will happen to my settings, etc? I realise that the apps I've shifted with Link2SD will still be on the partition.

If I flash another ROM, Do I then need to setup everything again from scratch? Do I do a restore of the NAND? I'm guessing restoring the NAND undoes the custom ROM install?

Anyone who can shed some light on what would happen before I try it, would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

NAND = Internal Memory basically, including system and data partitions

EXT= Where the Link2SD Apps go.

So backup in recovery using Nand + EXT.

If you flash your custom ROM then all your apps, settings etc. will be erased, you'll have to start from scratch.

So use Titanium Backup to backup apps, Android has a built in feature that (sometimes) restored some preferences such as Wi-Fi passwords.

If you need to revert just use your Nand + EXT Backup and then your phone will basically be restored to it's previous state.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

Is the nand+ext backup option where the other backup is? I didn't see a nand+ext. I'm on the latest recovery.

I backed up my apps using Titanium. One thing I found though was that Link2SD didn't recognise the apps on the ext partition after flashing the custom ROM. When I look at the storage info, it knows there is stuff on it. After your explanation, I'm guessing I need to restore the app backups from Titanium and that will then bring them back and have Link2SD recognise them again?

Yes restore the apps and data from titanium. It is one of the best apps IMO for switching Roms. Link2sd doesn't restore whats on the ext at least not from what I've found anyways.

The New Recovery (3.0) doesn't back up EXT, you need 2.2. Apparently it's a bug with 3.0.

You could try the restore option in Titanium Backup. If that still doesn't work I'd say just do the following

1.) Backup current ROM.

2.) Full wipe, including the EXT partition. Not the SD Card.

3.) Re-flash the ROM.

4.) Restore the apps (and data if you like) from Titanium Backup.

Thanks all.

So, I can still use recovery 2.2 even though I'm on 2.3.6?

I'm about to get a 32GB card for the phone, so I'm going to need to redo the Link2SD ext2 partition anyway. Any recommendations on what size I should make the ext2 partition?

I think it should be okay.

I have a 16GB card and I made mine 1GB which is more than enough TBH.

Thanks again k0zmic for the help.

According to what I've read, max card the LM can use is 32GB.
